Would appreciate it if anyone had recommendations regarding this sort of thing.. I've been tasked with finding some kind of "decent" solution for "project management" within a certain criteria:

1) Security. Open source and fully updated and industry standard SSL etc and robust script security and bug fix history

2) functionality. Able to run file sharing. Admin and user and client groups/permissions. Gannt charts and scheduling. Project management, version history, forumnesc timeline type stuff, contact database to store key contact details for suppliers, customers, patners collaborators, etc

As a starting point I have list there http://pm-sherpa.com/solutions/

These represent alternatives to "basecamp" which apparently is not what is wanted.

I've not really heard of any of those but maybe someone here has, that would be great if you have time to give me some input.

Thanks for looking

Regards

edit: expectation is to pay for this service, maybe lump sum for the year or whatever doesn't matter, support is important.

trello.com

is all you need

you can invite people, share files/photos, and create endless amount of tasks etc

also for payed version you get a "private" one

If your company is using Windows Server 2008 you have free access to a "lite" version of Microsoft sharepoint which handles everything you're looking for. It isn't exactly newb friendly though.

edit: just noticed the fact that your company is willing to pay money for ongoing support or lump sum. If you have your own servers you can host a full featured sharepoint yourself, or if not Microsoft does hosted sharepoint servers. http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/share … 89366.aspx  for the online solution, you'll have to talk to someone at Microsoft if you plan on hosting yourself as they no longer advertise their "buy-once" options.

zorrolaro thanks I will check it out - This actually might come in handy for a future project if not this one so yeah, thanks for that.

Turns out I got it a bit ass backwards - we're wanting to set up some locally hosted webserver with the collaboration software on it, the email I got was rather ambiguous.

Currently experimenting with something called "dotproject" I have a server up and running, this may do initially and looks like it can be expanded.

Still, it's a bit of a minefield with all the choices out there!

Thanks

Doesn't answer your question completely as I agree that SharePoint is the right solution for what you're after.

But, if you're ever project managing a development project - Microsft offer this http://tfs.visualstudio.com/ for free.
It's a cloud based team foundation server, most developers I speak to don't even know the free service exists.

Enables build iterations, code reviews, tasks, bug reporting etc which integrate into vis studio.

workstations and servers will be running Linux, we can't use sharepoint this time around but I will bear it in mind for future so thank you for that idea. This time we will be avoiding microsoft completely.

SyrusMitshi that is interesting also! thank you kindly for letting me know about it.

I was flustered at first being charged with sorting this out but I think it'll be alright now I go to set up a server at the premises tomorrow and chat with the guy a bit more about how it should be put together.

I've used that one before, and was thinking when reading the first post that it ticks all your boxes.
