So I bought a new asus monitor with 144hz refresh rate today to replace my old benq 60hz, and after shutting down my computer and plugging in my new display everything goes black right after the win 7 loading screen, I can still see the mouse but thats it. So I rebooted into safe mode(this works) and removed my graphics driver and reinstalled that but it still wont boot up normally? I tried plugging in my old monitor and that works fine. Heeeeeelp!
I have a gtx 580 if that matters anyhow.
Also, accessed nvidia control panel in Win7 and its saying "Your currently not using a screen connected to a nvidia gpu unit"
When you're in Safe Mode set a new resolution (it won't let you pick anything but a really low one) then reboot and hopefully the monitor should at least be on and you can increase the resolution again.

What this guy said!
Or, if you still have your old monitor, hook that up as the main monitor and your new one as secondary.
You should be able to change the resolution normally then.
Edit: Just noticed your edit! (I should probably read it all before commenting in the first hand)
If our suggestions does not pan out.. Try this link, he seems to have the same issue as you and for him, the problem was a corrupt registry key.
