If I understand correctly, episodes 1-5 are a standalone, 400 days is the expansion for episodes 1-5, and survival instincts is a totally separate standalone? I'm trying to get into the game but I don't want to mess up the install and miss out on anything.

1-5 is first "season"

400days is nothing to do with the first 5 episodes, but what ive read its a start for season 2.

Survival instinct just keep away dont even touch it with a stick

There are some mentions of events from episodes 1-5 in 400 days but its one liners if even that, which doesn't really have effect of the events in 400 days Like when the "cancer group" stole the boat from Lee & company, and whom was guarding it etc.
