Hi. This is probably a pretty stupid question, but how the hell do i set up my VPN? I'm using TorGuard and all I did was installing viscosity and putting the servers from TorGuard in there. All that sounds correct right? My problem however is that everybody says that their speed goes way down when their using a VPN far away. And I'm currently living in Norway but I'm connected to a TorGuard server in Miami-US. My speed is the same. I have tried many different servers like Netherlands and Romania too, and my speed doesnt drop at all. And also, what the hell is the difference between UDP and TCP? I tried googling it but couldnt at all make sence of it. lol

Funny thing also, i tried doing a "where am i right now" search on google, and google maps thinks I'm in Portugal, even when I'm connected to Miami. When i do the same search only with IP it shows the correct place tho. I'm just confused wheter i'm safe or not. Anyone with insight and knowlegde on this willing to give a thurrow(?) answer?

Thank you!

Not sure I'm the most qualified to answer here since there's some really pro people here, but here's my points.

First off, you know you're connected to the VPN if you go to a site like http://www.whatsmyip.org/ before you connect and after you connect and the IP's are not the same.

Loss of speed should happen though so it's weird you don't see that. What are you using to measure your speed? I would suggest you use speedtest.net.

Difference between UDP and TCP is not really something that would concern you that much in this case, but basically a TCP package carries a part that tells wherever you're connected to sort of "report back" to you that it has been recieved, this way you know the package was delivered or not. UDP doesn't have this funcion and just sends packages without caring if they are recieved or not (this is more common in services like VoIP or video conference systems since it doesn't really matter if some data was lost during the way).

I've seen some strange results on some IP trace sites as well, so I'm not entirely sure you can rely on them fully. One test that you can do is to do a traceroute to somewhere when your VPN is connected. You can do the traceroute to whatever host, like google.com just to see the first steps. If the route carries you to Miami (or wherever you're VPN is connected) then you know that it goes through the VPN.
To do a traceroute simply open CMD (start -> cmd and enter) then type tracert google.com and hit enter. The values for the second step should change in your tracert when the VPN is on (first step is your own router and then where the VPN is).

Good luck

Thank you, Robert! That really helps actually. First I was just checking my speed through my download rate with torrents, but i checked it with speedtest.net too and it really is exactly the same. I'm thinking it might be because my speed is so slow already (5mp/s) - if it goes any more down I'll lose the internet. lol. But yea, from a regular torrent with an avarage amount of seeds I'll do a good 650kb/s - with and without the VPN activated. I did find out that my upload rate is faster with UDP than TCP tho.

I went to the whatsmyip.org site and checked and my IP is changing. Also did the tracert thingie and it worked as it should. So I'm guessing i have done everything correctly after all then.

Thank you again! =)

If your VPN provider has 1000Mbit (lets say 10-20Mbit realistically out to you)  connection and you just 5Mbit then you wont even hit their bandwith wall.

For those with 20-100+ Mbit.. Thats a different story
