'Normal' size smartphones:
Can't go wrong with the likes of the iPhone 5 (IMO the 4/4S is just a tad 'too' small!)
'Large' size smartphones:
I have an S4 and I love it. Sure, there are loads of gimmicky little bits of software but the handset runs fast, smooth, stable, feels better and more solid than the S3, and the screen is fantastic - a joy to use. Camera is great with good lighting but a bit under-par with anything less than mediocre lighting imo. Google are releasing a 'vanilla' S4 and ROM's of it are already surfacing... Imagine one of the best & fastest handsets on the market coupled with the vanilla Google ROM... Can't go wrong!
Xperia Z... Great handset - solid, sturdy. Unfortunately Sony are not that great reacting to firmware updates so see that bug that annoys you? Yeah, it'll likely remain there until Sony can be bothered to patch it. This is personal opinion and experience, others may disagree. Great screen, good camera, nippy and speedy handset... I loathe all of Sony's built-in apps though.
HTC One - Definitely a multimedia phone. The 'boomsound' speakers are no gimmick either - this is easily the best phone currently available in terms of loudspeaker audio. Music and videos just sound fantastic - far more immerse and enjoyable experience than from any other handset I know of. The camera I'm still making my mind up about but there's no denying the low-light capability is much better than the vast majority of mobile phone cameras out there. Quality is decent but photos look NOWHERE near as good on your PC or print as they do on the handset itself. The fantastic screen makes everything look better than it is.
'Giant' size smartphones:
Xperia Z Ultra... I know what you're thinking - how would I know? Thankfully I've been user testing one of their prototypes for a few weeks. Honestly this thing is scary big. I can't really consider it a phone more than I can a small tablet. The screen is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on a mobile device. The blacks are pitch black and the colours pop and come alive. It's absolutely stunning. Camera is a so-so 5MP number with no flash (5MP in widescreen, 8MP in 4:3 ratio), but with such a massive device you're gonna look stupid using it as a camera, so I can see why little focus went in this area. 2.2GHz quad core buttery smooth performance and even switching from one intensive app to another is fluid with no lag or jitter. If you love playing mobile games and watching video on the go, this should be a definite consideration

Mobile phone expert told me all of this. Android phones are like dumb phones compared to an iPhone. The camera on the Galaxy S3 is pretty bad too, again apple win with taking pictures.
I suggest doubters go to an Apple store and listen to real experts.

The iPhone is a good phone but it is not the best. Pretty much every phone manufacturers that is making high end android phones has one or two phones that is better than the iPhone 5.
And in terms of price the iPhone is terrible. You pay 50% more money for an iPhone 5 that is worse in every single aspect compared to the HTC One.
I only paid £200 for my brand new iPhone 5, the other phones that are not as fast or good were more expensive. I looked at the samsung stuff and LG stuff first.

I plug my phone in, it comes up mass usb storage, I hit enable and can take files off and put them on without iTunes. I don't even have that installed. Perhaps you need to learn a little more about how the iPhone 5 actually works?
