What will he repercussions for North Korea be do you think? The UN can't really make more sanctions against them because only the little people will suffer.

And what will the effect on the world be? Is there a significant threat that the potatoe-head leading North Korea will launch and think he will win a nuclear war?

DPRNK propaganda video showing off their imagined use of their rocket and NYC in flames etc.

Between these guys and the Iranians launching monkeys into space we can be assured of peace for years to come

If Iran and North Korea were in Africa instead of the Middle East and next door to China they would have been bombed into the stone age years ago more than likely.

Translated version of that anywhere?

It makes me a tad bit nervous to think about which countries that hold that nuclear power :S

I think the video is a fake but still funny yet with a scary undertone. It is the third bomb they've detonated under ground and the power gets bigger and bigger.  People think that the 2009 bomb had a seismic magnitude of 4.7 and they think that one was of around 2.4kt (wikipedia).

This blast measured 4.5 in China so we could guess it is a little bit more powerful. To make a comparison to the Hiroshima bomb that was 16kt.

It would be a funny twist if Kim gathered 2500 ton of dynamite just to pretend he had a atomic bomb though.

Edit: Fixed the numbers.

.

Wikipedia doesn't say anything about a 2.4 megaton bomb.
In fact, the information on Wikipedia put the largest yield estimate at 20kt.

Thank you for opening the thread.

North Korea has severed their non agression pact with South Korea and made bold threats about nuclear war. How long till they actually attack? (http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013 … -deal.html)

Also read today that Kim Jong Un visited the southern border and made sure the soldiers were ready to fight. Even with China trying to placate the situation, things are looking pretty grim at the moment.

Clearly there was a mis-translation of 'We Are the World' in the North Korean version of that song haha.

I just love the level of discussion about this subject here in finland.
We had an "expert" form an institution which handles all kind of foreign affairs on tv saying that "he does not recommend NK to use nukes" because it will lead to retaliation.
Really, we need an expert to point that out, lol.

In the future people are reading about north korea and are wondering why the hell did the people in past let that happen. They allowed a whole nation of people to suffer under a tyranny and did nothing for a long time. They allowed one nation to bully the whole world.
My prediction is tha china (and russia) will turn against NK (they make somekind of deal with US) and together they are going to free that country. In few decades. Unless ofcourse NK makes something stupid and seals it's destiny before that.

If this is hte case I hope it only seals it's own destiny and not the rest of the planets too.

North korea alone does not have have that capcity. And nukes are not necessary to put that country in it's place.

It's quite awesome that one of your subs can end the war even before it started. If they send a missile towards you, I hope that Obama presses the button.

Nah, you have such a advantage on weapons technology these days that it's totally different than 50-60 years ago.

Yet again we are pulled into another "crisis" that we have no reason being in because we cant keep our noses out of other countries affairs. North Korea is Asia's problem not ours and placing US troops on the DMZ (to basically be cannon fodder) only inflames those nut jobs.

*edit* Here is a great oped on this...

Buchanan: Why are we still on the DMZ?

You are the world leader (and you have taken that position voluntarely), by definition you are then a participate in every crisis, especially when they are in this scale.
Unfortunately for you, that position does not allow only taking part on stuff which offers direct benefits to your country, it also means that you have to get your hands dirty sometimes just for the sake of it being the right thing to do.

And I applaude that, thats why I have such high respect towards your country, even it does shady business every now and then.
US is a good guy who occasionally does shitty things, but in general Im happy that it's there.

Didn't they agree on not developing nuclear weapons if you made this deal with them to be on their side in case of a war?

A very different wild approach could be to let them buy things from the west as is what they asks for. I mean what is the worst that can happen? That the people get food? They said we have nukes, if you do not let us buy things from the west we will start a war. UN answers with more sanctions. UN more or less declared war on horrible state that has nukes.

Do you really think that they want to buy things? With what? They don't have anything to pay with, and why should we give them shit if they are just spending more on a failed nuclear program with the enemies feeding their population?
