www.APTOIDE.com

Add these Repositories too, but only check while on wifi.

http://android-es.com/repo/apk/
http://aptoide.com/repo
http://repo.blackdroid.net   (Slow)
http://apkrepo.co.tv
http://aptoide.com/sapo
http://market.nerman.ws
http://repo.blackdroid.net
http://twistedumbrella.slackdev.com/aptoide   (down?)
http://server.uncabron.es/repo
http://apkrepo.co.tv  (down?)

Add them and youll get most of the paid-for apps youll need.
if you cant find the app, check Mobilism (google it) for it.
No need to jailbreak or root to install (99% of) apps, just download the .apk and install.

And on the topic of apps we use, i use 3G Watchdog, great for keeping note of your bandwitch usage.
and MSN Talk app... for... msn.

Android users deal with dodgy ‘Trojan virus’ application

Quote:

A number of sites are reporting on a supposed ‘Trojan virus’ currently ‘infecting’ Android handsets, and draining your bank balance by sending out text messages to premium rate numbers.

An apparently benign media player app, which is installed as a typical APK file, actually carries some crude code that makes your Android phone text premium rate numbers and rinse your credit. The program will then crash, and refuse to run again.

Now that the hysteria has calmed down, it should be noted that the dodgy app is being installed willingly by users, it wasn’t found in the Android Marketplace, and the user has to check “allow non-marketplace installs”, which comes with some hefty warnings about the consequences.

The Android’s rapid increase in popularity in sales is making the Google helmed operating system become a target for cyber hackers. The device has seen other forms of spyware since 2009, but while text message-based scams have hit other phones, this the first of its kind on Android devices.

No info on name of app etc

Android users leaving themselves open to fingerprint hacks

Quote:

Android phone users are leaving themselves susceptible to password hacks – simply by committing the all too common crime of leaving a few fingerprints behind.

A recent study (published by the University of Pennsylvania) has found that users have been inadvertently revealing their key-lock passwords by leaving oily fingerprints behind, showing exactly which keys have been pressed on the nine point pattern-drawing system.

By using different camera orientations and lighting settings, both partial and complete password patterns can be retrieved from Android phones without much difficulty. This is the case even if the patterns have been disrupted by general usage or contact from clothing.

So the next time someone hacks your phone to send creepy texts to random people in your contact list (such as your boss, prospective girlfriend/boyfriend or dear old mum), don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Clean your damn screens!!

I got the ota froyo update for Droid last night.  Flash doesn't seem to work and they took out tethering and hot spot features.   Jerks.

mbodnar..just root the phone and install any build that you want that has the features that you want. flash works fine on my froyo build...you can also install flashplayer from the marketplace for free I believe

bkrawk, what did you use for that benchmark. Just installed lag fix on my Galaxy S and would like to see how much its improved it, if any.

EDIT: nm, guessing it was Quadrant - just about to run it.

EDIT2: How disappointing, only scored 1705.

EDIT3: Strange running it a second time gets 1823...guessing it improves as you increase the number of runs as it caches the data, so not a real benchmark.

I'm a bit worried about bricking my phone, I'd love to do it though if I could find an idiot proof tutorial. The wifi hot spot would be quite useful.

I imagine most of you have heard about it, but for those that haven't:

RockPlayer is by far the best and most reliable video player for Android, and it supports most of the popular video formats being used today. I have yet to have it refuse to play a video, and the couple of videos that wouldn't play in the beta seem to work fine in the final release.

If you don't already have it, and you want near-flawless divx, etc, support, go and get it. It's in the marketplace for free (or you can use the apks on their site), but there is a little 'R' that displays in the top-rightleft of the screen. You can pay to remove it, but it doesn't really bother me.

ran it on my HTC HD2 running Froyo 2.2 and managed to score better than the Droid X..not bad for a phone that is almost a year old and now costs about half the price

Still running an Eclair build here so maybe Froyo helps somewhat. Not too confident about installing an unofficial Froyo build for my Galaxy S just yet. Keeping an eye on xdadevelopers to see what develops.

Like I said on another thread...Don't know about the Galaxy 5 but I am running an unofficial version of Froyo 2.1 with zero problems other than the battery consumption. Runs so smooth I am seriously thinking of getting rid of WinMo on here alltogether.

Most of the chatter on xda seems to indicate its buggy/laggy on the Galaxy S. I don't think its a true android phone as it should have just worked without needing tweaking unlike some of the HTC's and Moto's

New Android OS to be Honeycomb?

Android Honeycomb – sweet treat next in line?

Could the new Android OS be called Android Honeycomb? Following on from Google’s sweet-themed names for its operating systems, rumours are rife that the next iteration of the OS will be named Honeycomb.

Website Tech Radar apparently gleaned the info from reliable sources and it’ll see Honeycomb follow on from such sweet OS treats as Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo and the forthcoming Gingerbread.

Even though the Android 3.0 release Gingerbread is still awaiting a late 2010/early 2011 release, rumours are suggesting that Honeycomb is in the pipeline as an incremental update to it, making it officially Android 3.1 or 3.2. Android 3.0 Gingerbread is set to focus on tablet-friendly features such as optimisation for high-resolution screens and more powerful processors. It’s thought that Android Froyo will remain for lower-specced devices.

So what will the NEXT Android OS be called? Ice Cream? Iced Bun? Iced lolly? Have your say below…

Froyo is 2.2 version. 2.1 is Eclair. VGB, using Android on a HD2 caused you any connectivity issues?

not at all..wifi, 3g all work fine for me.
As I said the only and I mean only problem I have had so far running Froyo is it can drain my battery quickly..I mean if I go to bed with the phone anything less than 50% battery charge and I will wake up with it turned off because the battery will have run out.

Droid sure likes its battery. My Desire uses a lot when i leave all the standard stuff running on it. My HTC Touch HD loses battery faster than DXC downloads porn. Huge differance in how it feels on the different screens. Want to stab someone when i switch to the HD after i have used the Desire.

Hey guys. Maybe a bit off topic question... I hope it's ok posting it here.

I'm about to get my first android device and the thing that bothers me the most when changing telephone is migrating old contacts.

So since this will be a smartphone I wonder if it is possible to keep all contacts and all in something like Gmail and then migrate them from there to the phone? Is there an app for that? Or maybe several? Which is the best? Or since android is from google such option is already in stock in android devices?

Or maybe is there some other - better program to keep contacts on PC and then migrate them to android device?

cheers
