HBO has greenlighted highly anticipated fantasy series "Game of Thrones."

The premium network has picked up the project for a first-season debut next spring. Nine episodes plus the pilot have been ordered. Production will begin in Belfast this June.

The pickup comes on the heels of another HBO big ticket series order, for Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese's drama "Boardwalk Empire."

From the moment "Thrones" was first announced in development, the series based on the George R.R. Martin novels has generated enormous, perhaps unprecedented, online interest for a series at such an early stage.

The sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king's new right-hand man. The four-and-counting books in the series would each be used as one season of the series. Also cast in leading roles are Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and Jennifer Ehle.

Unlike many fantasy novels, the "Thrones" series largely avoids relying on magical elements and instead goes for brutal realism -- think "Sopranos" with swords. Martin, a former TV writer ("Beauty and the Beast"), writes each chapter as a cliffhanger, which should lend itself well to series translation.

Think this would have been a better photo to use, instead of the 300 one.

Good news!
Cant wait to see it.

Gonna give it a go, like every other HBO show (not that they were all good, but hey, they brought us the Sopranos, 'nuff said!).

Ten bucks says it's gonna be an awful flop and a horrible show, Legend of the Seeker rather than Rome.

Great. Been waiting for this.
According to Martin, it sounds like they are going for a serious approach so it will probably be good.

Cant wait for Dance with Dragons, the next book, either. GRRM hit page 1311 yesterday
http://grrm.livejournal.com/ - check it for a look at the first scene as well IIRC

I think Martin actually read the script and was in the loop most of the time when they were making the pilot. He seemed rather pleased with the way they were going with the story. He did say that they cant exactly follow the story from the books to the letter, but overall it seemed to him that they aren't straying to far away neither.
According to his blog posts at least.
Unlike Goodkind who hoped, that they would involve him in the making of the adaptation, but in the end he was left out of the loop completely. That's a huge difference i would say.

Also i put at more faith in HBO then Raimi when it comes to a TV series.

But we will see. Hopefully the pilot gets leaked.

I can understand why they didn't want anything to do with Goodkind,if he was involved it would most likely be worse than it is now.

I've got faith in this show. I haven't read the books, but everyone I've spoken to about them raves about it, and it also seems like the kind of story that would convert well to TV. HBO have been pretty good with their original programming also tbh.

Well that's all nice but it's by no means a guarantee that it will be a good tv series. Legend of the Seeker would be just as awful, possibly more, even if they used the storylines, dialogue and whatnot exactly the way it was in the books or followed the advice of that stupid looking writer with a ponytail. Because it's a shit show with nearly zero entertainment value.

If they only make 10 episodes for the first books and at40 mins per episode, Im not sure if they would even cover half of the story :/

No im not saying its a guarantee, but Martin has worked on some TV shows, mainly as i writer if i remember correctly, so thats got be worth something, doesnt it? As i said before, we will see.

As for Legend of the seeker i still believe if they followed the story/storyline from the books, the show would have been much better.

On a side note, why does everyone hate  Goodkind ?

TRAILER/TEASER: http://livefeed.hollywoodreporter.com/2 … iler-.html

"HBO's 'Game of Thrones' teaser trailer plus new art

Here's the brief teaser trailer for HBO's uber-anticipated "Game of Thrones" and some epic-looking new art of Sean Bean as Eddard Stark. You gotta expect that the HBO meeting to select "Winter is Coming" as the show's official tagline was the easiest marketing decision ever ... Meanwhile, the show's production start date was pushed back to July 26, with a spring or early summer premiere next year likely ..."

The teaser was too short

Was hoping for a little more "meat" in the teaser though, to get a grasp of the mood in the series.

Was hoping for a bit more from the trailer, it doesn't really show anything to get excited about.
Long wait though, lets hope it will be worth it.

A Song of Ice and Fire books are more about intrigues between nobles then any real epic stuff...mostly. Some parts are good though, but there isn't much action described. Lots of books translated into TV series, even more than usual lately...read the original books guys.

Boromir looks kinda badass. Still, it's going to be a horrible flop.
