A small suggestion this.

Would it maybe be a good idea having a version of WinRar on the site, FL  and without TTL? Just an idea seeing how everything, except music, needs to be unrared.

Wouldn't affect ratio much, and it would be very easy to get it for everyone.

W-edit: There are other free programs that can handle rar-files.

Edit: Fair enough.

I've read the suggestions in the thread, but I'm not sure if i understand "More info on browse.php" under "not going to happen". What does it exactly mean?

I would like to be able to search torrents by date. If I haven't visited the site for 1 week, I would like to be able to see which torrents have had the most downloads since then.

Is that included in "More info on browse.php", or does  "More info on browse.php" mean than you aren't going to add the uploaders name and other stuff to browse.php?
TEdit:Varying "snatched since date" listing will not happen.
You will need to check the 'Added' field back a week, then scroll up and down and watch the "snatched" figure.

More info means along the lines of uploader name, IMDB ratings, user ratings, whatever.

If someone edits their thread there should be some kind of notification icon so just people know, most of the times i don't notice them.

TEdit:Not a bad idea. Lets see.

A Quick Search field on the home screen. So one does not have to go to browse if one wants to quickly browse for a torrent.
TEdit:Nope.

The simplest of suggestions: On a torrent details.php page, make the type (e.g. "Apps/misc")  clickable so it would display that category (e.g. http://www.torrentbytes.net/browse.php?cat=22)

TEdit:Lets see.

Size on the Top 10 lists?

Also some links in the FAQ, and the pictures of the stars in the site announcements are out of date.

TEdit:Size as in "Largest" and "Smallest" torrents? Nope.
Please send a message of outdated links / whatever as a StaffMSG to Moderators.

Per-catogory feeds.

This would also somewhat alleviate the problem of there only being 50 items in the feed.

TEdit:Nope. Not for now atleast.

How about a poker room?  Not like the organized tourney a while back, but more of a floating game people could jump in and play for gig's.

Sounds hard to do, but WTF do I know.     :-D

TEdit:As the first post says under the NO-NO section:
"Gambling on UL/FL stats"

Hi,
It would be great, if you could make evry other torrent background colour a slightly darker shade when browsing torrents.
And maybe the torrent that the mouse is hovering on another shade, this would make reading the torrents much quicker and easier

e.g.
1)

This image has been resized, click here to view the full-sized image.

2)

This image has been resized, click here to view the full-sized image.

Let me know what you think of this idear?

TEdit:We think you need to use IMGW tags on pictures wider than 500 pixels. I think this is something that will not be done.

--- EDITED TO MEET THE DEMANDS ---

A proper sub-forum or a wishlist for packs (tv, anime, music etc) would be a good addon to this great tracker.

This kind of system has been impleneted on some private tracker and at least for music releases it has been a huge success. Here's the dril with music packs:

A list of a band's scene-releases is posted in the OP and the Uploader who's up for the task keeps track of the releases collected and the users who have the missing releases arrange so that the Uploader can collect all/most of the missing releases. How the user and the Uploader send the files to them is up to them, FTP for example has been proven to be an excellent method.

Also, the existing packs could be updated more often so that the old packs that are insufficient would be deleted and then reuploaded with the new releases included.

TEdit:"Wishing" is considered Requesting, "Wondering( if someone can find)" is considered requesting. Updating packs is up to uploaders as well.

I have my own torrent tracker (based on tbdev) and I recently made a change to my rss feeds so that the direct download feed is not necessary anymore. It uses an enclosure tag to allow linking to the torrent file (along with size of the file), while the the regular link points to the details page for the torrent. I have tested the rss feed in utorrent and it works identical to the old direct download feed.

Since the underlying code is probably similar you can probably copy and paste to wherever the rss feed is created (probably takeupload.php)

Of course you don't want to change it please feel free to ignore this!

Quote:

/* RSS feeds */

if (($fd1 = @fopen("rss.xml", "w")))
{
        $cats = "";
        $res = mysql_query("SELECT id, name FROM categories");
        while ($arr = mysql_fetch_assoc($res)){
                $cats[$arr["id"]] = $arr["name"];
        }

        $s = "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"iso-8859-1\" ?>\n<rss version=\"2.0\" xmlns:atom=\"http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom\">\n<channel>\n" .
                "<title>$SITENAME</title>\n<description>BioTorrents</description>\n<link>$BASEURL/</link>\n<atom:link href=\"$BASEURL/rss.xml\" rel=\"self\" type=\"application/rss+xml\"/>\n";
        @fwrite($fd1, $s);
        $r = mysql_query("SELECT id,name,descr,filename,category,size FROM torrents ORDER BY added DESC LIMIT 20") or sqlerr(__FILE__, __LINE__);
        while ($a = mysql_fetch_assoc($r))
        {
                $cat = $cats[$a["category"]];
                $s = "<item>\n<title>" . htmlspecialchars($a["name"] . " ($cat)") . "</title>\n" .
                        "<category>$cat</category><description>" . htmlspecialchars($a["descr"]) . "</description>\n";
                @fwrite($fd1, $s);
                @fwrite($fd1, "<guid>$BASEURL/details.php?id=$a[id]&amp;hit=1</guid>\n");
                $filename = htmlspecialchars($a["filename"]);
                @fwrite($fd1, "<enclosure url=\"$BASEURL/download.php/$a[id]/$filename\" length=\"$a[size]\" type=\"application/x-bittorrent\"/>\n</item>\n");
        }
        $s = "</channel>\n</rss>\n";
        @fwrite($fd1, $s);
        @fclose($fd1);
}
?>

i think that will not work at all since the rss feed we currently have is different from the one that is in the current releases of tbdev source code

Not exactly a feature but can you please upload the .mp3 torrents in packs? With the current situation 80/100 torrents in the browse page are .mp3 and it's very annoying. Kinda browse spam... ()

W-edit: The uploaders upload the torrents however they feel like it.

A reputation system for the forums?  Maybe not so much as a +1 or -1 system that I have seen on other forums.  Something more a long the lines of +1 until warning.

Meaning, that I could +1 someones reputation if they were helpful.

That number grows and grows with each +1 reputation on that members account.  Which gives other users an idea of how knowledgeable and helpful they are on the forum.

A single warning by any moderator resets the reputation of the user to zero.

Setup a reward system for members with a high level of points by adjusting their ratio.

1/1 being the default ratio (download/upload).  With a ratio of 1/3 at the highest tier in the reputation system.

Possible Tier Settings

1/1.25 @ +100 reputation
1/1.5   @ +250 reputation
1/1.75 @ +500 reputation
1/2      @ +750 reputation
1/3      @ +1000 reputation

Members could only +rep a single member per day and never to themselves.  Making it virtually impossible to cheat the system.

Ideally, it would give forums trolls a reason to behave  AND would prompt more members to be active on our great forums.

This would also have an added bonus for those members with slower internet or fixed bandwidth limits per month.  As simply being active and helpful on the forum will increase their ratio and save some of their bandwidth.

What do you think?

Edit:@ mbodnar, I think that was brought up once before and shot down by system admins.

TEdit:Nope. This would be similiar to already shot down forum post rating system.

umm.. a section were like very similar to ebay were if u have anything ur wanting to sell, just simply put it down with the price (name of the item, price, all details) and then a negotiation can work out .. if that makes sense...

W-edit: You know how the rules say "No merchandising is allowed on the site"? Yeah...

When you post or preview a message with a [quote] tag left open by mistake the page dies with a message saying that you need to check your quote tag count and nothing else on the page. If you do that and then hit back - at least in Firefox - you lose your original message. I know it's a bit silly to write your post in the textarea when it's a larger post as you're a lot more likely to lose it if your browser crashes or something but people still do it, and it wouldn't be difficult for the dead page to just display a little box saying what your original message was so you can take that and try and amend it without re-writing the whole thing, that is what I am requesting.

TEdit:This has to be an FF only problem. Use a decent browser.

Edit: Hahaha! No.

Edit: Sniper fixed it, thanks!

I character limit on the comments section.  Maybe 50 characters or 75.  So people don't write paragraphs about how great <insert random here> and that I shouldn't download it because I need to see it in the theater or buy it because it's such an innovative program.

I'm seeing paragraphs of fanboy BS on the comments section lately, and it is truly tiresome.

TEdit:Nope. Report those comments. Debating / fanboyism is not what the comments are supposed to be.

I see that "Improving torrent search" is undergoing development, but just to add a small thing: if we could also search inside Xmas torrents (description) it would be great. Thanks.

TEdit:The description search has been a feature for years. Making it work with 'special'/temporary categories is something that should be added.

One thing I'd like to request (as unlikely to happen as it may be) is SFW editions of the RSS feeds, simply put without the porn categories. Or what would be better is customisable feeds so maybe using a section of my.php where you could design what torrent categories would be in your personal feed.

TEdit:Nope, sorry.

A blog or facebook/myspace (...) page which updates when TB is down and why! Would be interesting to know why it is down and for how long this could be so.

I get worried each time the website does not work :s

TEdit:There is a blog, but no way to automatically update it (in case site goes down, it can't update anything.)
IF a reason is know, it will be on the irc support channel topic. IF there is some kind of an estimate as to when things will be back to normal, it will be there as well.

Like a thing that marks the page u have commented on u no.. for example... if i comented in page 4 and a few hours later that thread becomes 7 pages long... the page u commented on is like a different color for example red so u no what page u commented on so u can go back to it or what ever... if u dont understand i can probably make it more explainable

1, 2, 3, 4(red, since you commented on it), 5, 6, 7, 8, 9(could be red as well if u posted again)....  da da da and so on...

TEdit:"u no" -> "You Know"

Like this like is like a good like idea like , but like I do like not like think like it will like be like done.

i think that the anime/packs section should have its TTL removed like the other packs sections. Alot of good anime packs are getting deleted automatically when there are still seeds/leechers active on the torrent.

TEdit:I think anime should be removed from this site altogether as it is an exception already.

This could be considered a performance feature proposition. It didn't seem worthy for its own thread so I'll just put it here.

A very interesting blog post came out on 15th January about how to reduce HTTP requests. Surely a website of the size of Torrentbytes is concerned with this kind of issues?

http://robertnyman.com/2010/01/15/how-t … -requests/

The Article wrote:

“An extra HTTP request adds 200+ milliseconds to a page (worldwide average)”

After glancing over the source of Torrentbytes, it seems that there is a lot of room for improvement, especially in the Data URI area. Base64-Encoding the category icons or smileys comes to mind...

Perhaps this info will be useful to anyone. I am not trying to criticize any of the staff here, just trying to share some interesting knowledge.

TEdit:Noted.

Would it be possible to add a feature to your rss so it is possible to add search term to it.

For example .../rss.php?passkey=123456&username=hihi&direct&search=something

That would be create to them of us that uses external programs to search the site.

Like in torrent-fu it combines my search word with the rss URL like above and the scrape site to give me all results with that search term.

It should not be to har to implemet but in one if and another sql with query string value in it.
