Found the bittorrent faq I wrote 5 years ago when TorrentBits and Suprnova were the places to be. It is 18 pages long (what was I thinking..), is written to a mate, and contains a number of pix..

# in it I write that bittorrent was invented 2 years ago and is developed by Bram Cohen http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/ .

# I recommend a number of clients besides the original one, but my favourite seems to be BitComet.

# the most popular clients at the time, I write, are: Azereus, BitTornado, Burst!, ABC (Another BitTorrent Client), BitComet.

# I describe Azereus as a resource-hog.

# Check out an early version of BitComet (what I recommend for first-time use).

# I recommend setting his upload speed to 80% of his max, because, I argue, he will also be sending infomation to others and this will ease transfer between clients. I call this a smart trick...

# After explaining him about opening ports, yada-yada, I talk about sites for warez and I get to the infamous Suprnova site.

This image has been resized, click here to view the full-sized image.

# I call Suprnova the absolute most popular Warez provider.

# Its the oldest site, I say, that has been there from the beginning almost and has at least 1 million hits a day...

# It used to have its own tracker, but now it just a site which lists torrents from all sorts of public trackers, so to avoid anti-piracy groups.

# because of this I advice my mate not to download any Danish products..

# notice the tracker info below (good ol' oink.. had problems with public trackers back then, I guess):

This image has been resized, click here to view the full-sized image.

# lastly I talk about public sites, such as Suprnova vs. private sites, such as TorrentBits :smirk:

# I quickly mention that TorrentBits have forced seeding, meaning that if you never seed anything back you will eventually get banned

# I reveal to him that on public trackers I only give back a little

# but on private trackers I try my best to seed back to at least 1:0 :innocent:

# I add Suprnova first as the best public site getting between 100-400 torrents per day.

# I also add that Suprnova is so popular that there are scam sites outthere claiming payment for Suprnova service.

# Suprnova also has the newest game, I say apparently, but the bad news is that on Suprnova there are more leechers than seeders (including me *cough*).

# I mention Doom 3 as an example: when it came out it had 1 seeder and 50.000 leechers!!

# Then I mention bt.eastgame.net and filesoup.com .

# Finally there is TorrentBits :yay:

# TorrentBits is, I say, has just had its 1-year old birthday. They have specialized in 0day. Max number of registered users are 100.000 and people are banned every day (thank you, Helshad, hehe).

# I mention that the moderators are friendly, but to the point and will give you a warning if you break the rules.

# I mention I got a TWO-WEEK warning once.. and it was for double posting :'-( ) Maxthepuppy, if you read this we got serious business you and I...!!

# I also mention filelist.org a, at the time, younger site.

# Lastly I show him some cool pix from TorrentBits:

:omg:
You were interested in torrenting one day
It's all about serenity now I think
I was always interested about those old days I didn't see, I wish we could start a thread about TB history with only old schoolers posting their memories there

P.S.They warned you :'-(
I can't believe it, they dare?
Too bad Max :-P

Yup, I too roamed the sea once.. :pirate2:

King Oldschool would be Maxthepuppy possibly considering he was staff, unless RedBeard turns up :w00t: ...

Anyone who can remember who is behind this old avatar gets a thumbs-up from me :giggle: :

i think i must have joined torrentbits around the same time you created that document (as you said it was around one year in to the site?).

To be honest though I didnt get that involved in torrentbits, just got a few games and movies and made sure to keep a decent ratio.

Now I have a big mouth as well as the above.

I used to use BitTornado and refused to use the clunky Azureus or the more advanced BitComet   I certainly remember downloading Doom 3 and then playing it all the way through on a laptop that could only manage 10-15fps on the lowest settings! And yet I thought it was pure awesomeness! haha

I'm trying to think what the first torrent I got from here was..hmmm....I do remember the first ever torrent I downloaded was America's Army (would that be right?) but i dont remember if i got that from tb or a public tracker..

edit: aye i do remember that avatar.  I sometimes roamed the forums but i didnt post, so i remember some standout faces like those already mentioned like maxthepuppy..and then i always noticed Green for some reason, and then there was BoB and his mate (though BoB was called ...erm...*think dammit* ..aww its gone) CubeDish, oh and the devil guy who kept getting banned (name began with a 'W')?

edit: was BoB called Rossco or summit like that?

America's Army was free, wasn't it? Wouldn't make any sense to get it of a private tracker then.

And yeah, BoB used to be RossCo. I remember his mate too, but was that really CubeDish? I do remember him having some kind of camel avatar though.

I think you are talking about TB getting hacked for about 2 months in 2007  , your joining date says early 2005

Helshad

My current account is new, but I've had a few up through the years. Not because of leeching but because I have been away for more than the time limit allows and wanted to change nick a couple of times.

Was also one of the very first to Filelist, user no 7, uploader, came from where Filelist came from, which was a much better place. MW. Filelist was quite nice before adds came, and I left and never returned.

Warez used to have sharm. :-P

@ Kuskela : Nah it was defeniteley when Bits became Bytes. The site was down a while and then you had to get an account for the new named site and every time I applied I was told that there were no new accts open atm.

You were only three weeks behind me on signup so it wasn't a couple of months, although I understand how it might've felt that way. Those weeks felt like years to me

I remember signing up to bits though - I had to write a program to hammer signup and warn me when the form popped up instead of the "we're full, blehhhhhhh" message. Ended up scripting it to autocomplete that form too because it still kept missing it. :giggle:

Does anyone remember the days before high speed internet connections? Warez was a different game back then

I remember using a program called Hack a Tack to get things from other peoples computers. Or going to a site like warezcrawler, warez.com....

Can't remember all the search engines, but those were a couple...

Yeah, it's good to have idols who we can look up to:

SQL query:
SELECT *
FROM `deletion_log`
WHERE changelog LIKE '%disabled by sniperfin%'
LIMIT 0 , 30

Showing rows 0 - 29 (4,470 total, Query took 0.0348 sec)

I do very well, I sarted with c-64 and 300baud modem, but it did not last very long, after the first phone bill my father force me to sell the modem.
Then in the late 80's and early 90's there were a lot of bbs's in scandinavia, especially in sweden.
Those were the good old days.

The HDD postal rings trumped the BBSes for speed even though you were relying on the royal mail

Receive a HDD in the post, take what you want, add what you have, send it on to the next guy.

There was only so much you could download with even a 56K modem. I remember spending two days downloading a release that was a couple of floppies...
