Here is another little app that i made and have been using for a while. I have again tidied it up, so hopefully some other people can enjoy it.

SmartRename is a utility that allows you to rename downloaded TV Shows to a format that is better suited for archiving.
You can also automatically copy/move renamed files to a dynamic location for storage.
This can be expanded with the use of filters which allow you to be more detailed about the file name format and target location.

It works by querying tvrage.com for the latest listings for that particular show. It can batch rename files and can move them to a folder of your choosing.
The best way to access SmartRename is to right-click on a media file and select SmartRename. SmartRename can handle multiple files at the same time.
Great program but one question, how do I add multiple files at the same time?
Select all the files you want to rename, right-click, select SmartRename

What database does this use? I had problems with the medieval dvd rips of Arrested Development season 1.

Arrested development works fine for me. What is the name of the file you are trying to rename?
Ha sorry, i started reading the help and answered my own questions, thanks for the help though.
med-ad101.avi
the.simpsons.704-med.avi
Are the names of the ones that don't work. Obviously the rest of the season are named the same way.
the.simpsons.704-med.avi - is an unusual way of naming a show. i will add a rule for it. but not very many shows are named like that. hence it failing.
med-ad101.avi - i don't know how you expect it to rename this. there is no show name in that filename.
smartrename will always look at the directory name first, then check the filename. so if you had left it unpacked in it's original folder, then it should have picked it up from there.

nice program thanks for sharing it
i had a season it couldnt rename due to the files been wrongly renamed. the original file was called
fs.201 i renamed it to Farscape.S02E1 then i tryed the proogram and it found the real name for me witch is Farscape - 2x01 - Mind the Baby
1. why cant i use the right click option on > 10 files at a time?
2. why cant i use the right click option on .mpgs? (adding individually works)
3. can u do an option to add a directory?

lol, seems a bit funny to rename a file so a renaming app can rename it for you.

1. i dont know, you tell me. what happens when you select more than 10 files?
2 . people still use mpgs?
3. ok

2. lol, true, but i had some
3. cool!
1. the smartrename option doesnt appear when i right click on more than 10 files
anyone else experiencing this?
EDIT: New version 3.0.93 - recursive directory support, added mpg to supported types If you are upgrading, and want to add the "SmartRename" option to folders, you will need to uncheck "Add to context menu" in preferences, click ok, then recheck it.
I have fixed your problem in the new version (3.0.101). Any files incorrectly renamed may need to be adjusted before they will rename correctly again.
I have also added an "undo" feature for sucsessfully renamed files. Simply right-click on a renamed file in the queue and you will get the option to roll back the changes. (you can also do this in windows explorer as smartrename is compatible with the windows explorer undo system).
Current version 1.0.101

when you say 10 files, are you sure it isnt 15? Becuase i have found there is a "limitation" in vista for 15+ files. The only easy way round this is to select the folder and not the individual files. You could also do it in batches of 15, as files will be added to the queue while the program is still open

Great application.
This is really useful

Very nice app.
Well done.
Congratulations.
One feature suggestion: Subtitles,
I use subtitles to watch my episodes, will be nice to have a feature that will rename also the .srt subtitle file (or other filetypes for the subtitles)

apologies. you are right. its >15 files that the option doesnt appear.
i thought u put the limit in place to stop the tvrage server or ur proggie being flooded. with the folder option now, it solves the problem, so again, thanks for the help.

yup, it's a vista thing. smartrename doesn't actually get loaded until you click SmartRename, so it doesn't know how many files are about to be loaded. it's all vista.
as for flooding the tvrage servers, SR usses intelligent caching, so you will only query the server once for a entire season/group of episodes.
also selecting a folder is indeed a good way to do it. but don't forget that SR will still accept queue additions once it's loaded. you could right click on 15 files, select SmartRename (at which point SR will start donig its thing), then you could go back to the folder and select another 15 files and select SmartRename, the files will then be added to the queue.

I dont think it matters that much if you're using tvrages recommended code for quick search queries as you're sending tiny amounts of text data to them and receiving tiny amounts of text data back which you parse. Well thats what I hope as I have a perl script that does that but for automated downloading from usenet. I use a different script for tvrenaming which queries epguides instead.

yah and sme subtitles are more than one file idx and sub and rar .....it only works for adding them manually in the app using file>select file
One question; By the looks of the screenies, all episodes are renamed to [snowname] - [episode number] - [episode name]
Can you maybe let "us users" customize that kinda? I really want to add this to my South Park collection, but I've already renamed S1-5 with [episode number] - [episode name], cause all the episodes are already in a huge South Park-folder. I won't need the showname in the beginning.
Thanks a lot for making these small apps, they are life(or at least time)savers -Vidde

I dont mean to sound harsh, but instead of wasting my time asking questions like that, can you please at least try the program first. It's a bit insulting since i'm giving the program away for free that you expect free tech support too
