Edit: I see the confussion now, american dollars are not canadian dollars

And thus the CAD beside my $150.

Edit:

Just got it all working (at least to the point of command line BTing; man is it fast).

100mbit download is usually easy to max on a shared service. If you seed on a decent TV show you will also be able to max the 10mb/s upload provided you are using a capped service

Just remember not to overseed guys. Many people out there do not have servers and are struggling. Please think of them when showing off your speeds

I'd really like to hear more about Hetzner, what's the bandwitdh, uptime, tech response like? What does it say in the AUP it doesn't seem to be there on the site.

What's the difference in Root Server and Managed Server? What's the optimal os setup?

Anyone know if http://www.webtropia.com is any good?

#773020 by unknown[22371] at 2007-01-30 06:52:40 (6 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

My hetzner server rocks. I just got TorrentFlux up and working.

The fastest I've seen on a single torrent is 8MB/sec, but it finished DLing before it peaked any higher. It was an episode of Prison Break... which I finished in about 15 seconds flat.

If I load up a few torrents I can easily hit > 10MB/sec down.

Upload is diff...most I've seen up is 6.2MB, combined ~8MB/sec. But that could be just because there are lots of slow leechers....

I chewed thru my 1TB of bandwidth in 6 days. Its supposed to be clocked down to 10/10mbps after 1 TB is done, but I'm still getting >>>10mbps. Perhaps theres a "grace" buffer of GBs before it kicks in. Dunno.

Anyways, 10/10 is nothing to sniff at after 1 TB of hardcore 100mbps usage. And you can email them for 250GB more at 100mbps as many times as you want.

(There are two hetzners, you want the german one, not the south african one)

Thank you for your reply.

I'm wondering if you paid 99€ + 39€ right away or if you got a free month with your server? And how's server performance been? (I probably want to set up some MySQL/PHP stuff on it, and perhaps also some SVN access). Just wondering if you had performed any benches on it to see the general server performance.

And do they have an AUP in english? Yeah i'd like to make sure i'm not shutting down my users forums and stuff if it turns out that it's not allowed, then i'll just get 2 seperate accounts or something like that

How long is the expected setup time btw?

Edit:

To noob, i'm not german but i did learn a bit and if i'm certain i think it says the following on http://www.webtropia.com/home/root-server/details.html

Monatsgrundgebühr (erste drei Monate)
"Monthly charge (first 3 months) 24/39/54 euro"

But then it says:

Monatsgrundgebühr (ab dem vierten Monat)
"Monthly charge (At/after the fourth month) 48/78/108 euro"

So it seems to be some kind of promo with a cheap server the first 3 months, then it goes up to 78€ the last 9 months of your contract. I'm not german but i'm pretty sure it's what it says. And you seem to pay for 12 months at a time, so a total of ~800€ a year.

My Leaseweb dedi server is active. I have absolutely no idea how to set up the server though... I've searched for guides but couldn't find anything that told me the very first steps.
I don't know how to get TorrentFlux on the remote server.

If someone can help please PM me. Thanks

I want to use this 100Mbit to fuel TorrentBytes! :-)

#773428 by unknown[155532] at 2007-01-30 23:49:37 (6 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I pay about $1000 CAD/m for my 100 Mbit server.

HOWEVER, RackedHosting.com sells some amsterdam dedi servers pretty cheap.

torrentflux is horrible. use rtorrent or BitTornado terminal mode.

I see. Well, I'm currently getting:
"W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/"

on any command I use. Anybody know what's up?

That's the package manager complaining that you don't have permission to use it.
Are you logged in as root? You shouldn't be but...

apt needs root privileges to operate, try prepending "su" to your commands,
e.g. :
su apt-get install blah
su someprogram someoptions someswitches

It will prompt you for your root password and then hopefully execute the command.

Does it really matter? Torrentflux is just the frontend to a BitTornado client.

You most certainly break the AUP. If yet to come across a host that allows you to upload (or even download) illegal material. Anyone got knows of someone who got busted, or got busted himself?

I think I read the cheapest server is the first 3 months 24 euro, and the following 9 months 48. Most likely without VAT too, so if you live in the EU multiply with 1.19.

Oh and as daemon client I've done some testing with mldonkey. The cool thing is that you can run the client on your own PC, and can download the occasional ed2k link. It fails for proper documentation though.

According to what i was quote they do infact have a clause against erotic material, and copyrighted material, however they also write that they will under no circumstance start sneaking around on the servers.

and it requires a mysql db, apache with php, and a bunch of other crap that just uses up resources. BitTornado curses interface is a million times better.
