Yeah so it seems. That was the first place I looked, but with the name I posted. And of course didn't find anything.

Any new anime recommendations?

I like:
Naruto
Great Teacher Onizuka
Hunter x Hunter
Hikaru no Go
Chobits
Death Note
BECK

Thanks! :-)

Based on these as a starting point I think I can safely recommend the following:
  • Shion no Ou If gameplay with a mystery interests you, this is a good one. Chess and murder, can't really beat it.
  • Hellsing Ultimate Alucard is a beast and you can't help but to love 'im.
  • Kekkaishi Interesting little series about a couple of kids fighting demons at their highschool. Don't let the truncated description turn you off, it's actually pretty fun watch, imo.
  • Seirei no Moribito Like Samurai Champloo you can watch this all in one go, it's addictive. Not to say the story is the same as SamCham, just the lure to watch it all at once because it's so engrossing.
  • One Outs Think of this as Death Note meets Baseball, only without all the death and all the insanity of constant cliffhangers. Not great, but not bad either.
  • Yakushiji Ryouko no Kaiki Jikenbo I honestly can't point to one thing that stands out about this series. It's episodic, then serial at the end. However, it's just plain goodness. Art and storytelling are wicked good. Those 2 standards alone make it a perfect 10. However, as a whole... 7.
  • Studio Ghibli Anything by this group is just awesome. Basically all movies and ALL about the art. The stories are a distant second to the art but still amazingly well told. I often as not watch at least one SG movie a month.
  • Daughter of Twenty Faces Quirky little series that leaves you satisfied at the end yet wanting more. Best dictomy ever.

    A list with shows.

Nice list. Will have a look at a couple of those

If you liked Death Note you should check out Code Geass, the main protagonist is very similar to Light and don't let the Mecha theme fool you if that's not your thing.

Kaiji is also a great suspense/mind-games anime about a gambling degen which I highly recommend.

Now my question cause I wonder whether it's me who have changed or the animes are really going downhill. I haven't really watched an entire series since like 3 years cause whenever I try to pick a series up I just can't enjoy it. I loved most of the 90s and 00s shows which I guess you could consider mainstream (SEL, GTO, Geass, DN, FMA, Samurai X, Higurashi, Cowboy Bebop and so on). While I understand that some might not even consider those titles to be that good to begin with, what I'm trying to say is that I don't feel like I'm looking for anything too sophisticated but when I read a description of some recent animes or watch an episode I just can't get into it whereas back in the days I could hardly wait for another episode or would start watching it immediately if the series was out. The biggest hype last/this season - SOA - is such a shallow crap but than again it feels like something I would enjoy as a teen. Does anyone feel the same?

Personally I hated Kekkaishi, it definitely felt like one of those "geez now i've started this i have to finish it" types of anime, except you keep waiting for it to get better and it doesn't. If you have time to waste sleeping through it's 52 episode length then go ahead. Otherwise, watch something else Sad to say that Kekkaishi is one of the few anime i've regretted watching. (Eureka 7 is up there also on the shelf of regret)

@Lagmalix - There are definately some hiddien gems among the new series. I recommend not watching airing shows, that way you avoid the hyped up shows and avoid the dreaded weekly wait time.

Eh, you didn't like Eureka 7? I think it's one of the better animes.

But then again, i also like Kekkaishi, they have pretty cool abilities.

Pretty much every character in Eureka 7 is vomit inducing for me. I understand they were trying to make it angsty but urgh. Other than the production value I personally see now reason as to why it's rated so high. I cannot see myself re-watching it ever, I'd rather watch Toradora for the billionth time

I have to agree with you Lagmalix. I didn't watch anime back in the 90, 00s but I've watched some of them later on and they have a certain feeling that makes them stand out. I guess that the artists where more limited to what they could possibly create due to technology so they just did their very best and put all their passion into it.

I do manage to find some gems in every season, but almost every time it isn't one of the bigger names and hyped up animes. One of my favorites from the spring season 2012(I think), Jormungand, carried on now in the winter and this is really a good one! The studio does a great job with the animations and the story and the characters are really intriguing! I haven't finished watching these two, but Shinsekai Yori and BTOOOM have reeled me in and seems promising. I also enjoyed watching K even though it's quite mainstreamish, but Im looking forward to it's second season

Just started getting into anime recently. Anyone seen Ghost in the Shell movies/series? If not, give it a go - well worth a watch and will have you thinking. Also, brilliant anime "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216651/  sounds cheesy maybe, but really cool film

Yeah, I'm ALLLLLLLLLLL about GiTS. I've bought the light books, the manga, the DVD's, CD's. Watched it several times and still find little gems when watching the series, movies and OVA's.

Seeing as how the movie was just released last November, you're probably going to have to wait 6-9 months before even a DVD RAW comes out before finding a fansub of it. Worst case scenario is in the late summer/early fall sometime before there's a decent fansub of it.

Fantastic series ! I searched here on TB for GiTS and saw no sign of it. It's a shame the anime section is so small

Yeah it's a real shame. I would recommend Psycho Pass. It's really awesome. Not cyberpunk but it's a detective/action anime. It's really great. Also it's not done yet. Still has 8 or 9 episodes left.

Lately i checked out Sword of the Stranger(anidb link. Really fun movie.

Anyway, i checked out simillar movies to it, according to anidb, but i saw first one already and i really not in the mood for looking second one (1993! come on, digging mummies is easier). So maybe anyone could recommend some good movie or tv series with swordplay involved and detailed fighting scenes (i mean fighting scenes should be fun to watch)?

I saw already: Rurouni Kenshin tv series + movies, Samurai Champloo, Katanagatari, Fate/Stay night, Final Fantasy 7 both movies, Scrapped Princess, The Twelve Kingdoms many other, but i don't remeber titles.

Yes it is slow, and weird. However, it is excellent. It seems like a bunch of standalone episodes but the dénouement really ties them all together. Then there's the Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid type feeling as well.

    #1521438 by SnorkyDonor (Power User) at 2013-02-18 18:40:18 (5 months ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Alot of adult-sci-fi-cyber-punk type anime kinda have that slow, weird, depressing feeling for me. So I tend to pad out watching them with tons of other stuff.

I tried serial experiments.  Couldn't really get into it

But ergo proxy. ..... fallen in love with this so far.  Up to ep 5. I think it's great

    More like this needed

    Edit
Spoke to soon. Halt easy through it got weird and lost its way
Near end it turned into a game show. ... switched it off
