I wonder how one of the oldest private sites allowed so many others to pass it. Was it infighting or lack of desire to be the best, or a money shortage?

A number of people could come forward and save this site. What it boils down to is, they don't want to for whatever reasons they have! You can imagine how much more there is to that story!

To the people that wanted to save the place, thanks

Desperately checked what month it was in hopes of it being a cruel Aprils fools joke. Bye bye TB, you've provided me with hours of joy! Returning to public trackers is like riding the subway after being disowned by your rich father...oh well. A sincere thanks to all the admins .

Thanks so much for the good times.  I've checked this site pretty well every day for 5 years.  I'll really miss it!

When it comes to torrents? Well, umm, I don't know, pick any of the private sites you have a hard time signing up for.

I don't know many but for example, Torrentleech is a corrupt site (basically pay-to-leech) with lots of shitty non-scene releases, lots of unrared shit, and shit stuff like e-books etc.

E-books don't have to be shit in my opinion, the rest I completely agree with. I like my releases nice and tidy, rarred and named by conventions. Torrentleech is not the place to go if you're looking for that.

It was just people wanting to stay nostalgic that has kept the site the way it is and the reason so many people have left over the years.

Opinions and idea were always thrown around the staff forums but new ideas were never taken up, nothing new was coded. People in charge wanted the site to stay Old Skool whilst all the other new sites started to implement new ideas and start to put distance between themselves and the Old Skool master.

In the end it was the over riding factor to my decision to leave staff and to try and start up my own site. It gave me the opportunity to try new ideas and to see if they worked. 2 years later things are going pretty well but within that 2 years, still nothing here changed and yet more people left.

I do understand people liking nostalgia and I am all for keeping as much as possible but with the ever proceeding innovations of other sites it's just plain silly to ignore what much of the userbase wants in favour of a few staff who want to keep the site the same as the day it opened.

Looking back, this site has had the potential to become something that no other site could have ever dreamed of. It already ahd the community that no other site could have matched, it just needed to keep up with the times.

Such a missed opportunity :-(

Extremly well put wiggy.

There have been many staff leave due to the same frustrations. Myself included. The only way i could have made any difference is by being able to code and do it all myself sadly i dont have that skillset,

All the tantrums and stomps couldnt change a thing. Even with site ownership i couldnt demote/ remove the issue.

100% agree with every word wiggy said.

This place should have been 200,000+ members by now, what bright spark decided to lower the userlimit.

Fast torrents, 200,000+ members and all in a fast blue forum. Once the usernumbers started to be pruned and pruned and pruned, it was like this place lost its oldschool ways!

Once you start capping the userbase numbers the forums goto shit. Even better, once you start losing the members the tracker peers goes to shit.

The start of the downfall was when the user numbers were lowered, IMO.

You could have kept this place looking exactly the same, the users would still have come back. Some people don't want added shit all over the place, this place was clean and fast. Other trackers just look messy with their options on options. Its a fucking tracker not Max Power, the community makes a torrent site like this not bells and whistles.

The fact that so many stayed around when other places offered the world says alot! I don't think it was a case of most users walked away, most of the posters in the forums were fucking banned! Why come back to that shit? I'm not talking the piss takers, just normal users with an opinion, sometimes language barriers got people banned. One person takes shit the wrong way and boom "you are a cunt" and banned! Now that would not be too bad if the user cap was 100,000+ with a nice steady turnaround of fresh blood or old users signing back up but for most there was no way back in due to such a piss poor userlimit.

Christ mate, it was only a week. I've never gotten around to asking anyone to do mine, but it would be pretty easy to make, considering my old username: Gollum.

Sorry mate, forgot to reply to this, I wondered where you was hiding a few years back. Will pm you my details. PS. A week? slacker, it was the 1st thing I asked for  I think it was the main reason for me to join staff when I was asked. "Max, do I get a locked smiley?"

Been here since 2007, which must've been about the beginning?

I was a member of Torrentbits before that

This site has been awesome and I'd like to thank everyone involved in running it and uploading the torrents

Not sure where I'll go from here, Torrentshack maybe?

Good luck everyone!

From memory the user cap was lowered simply bacause the numbers of users had fallen.

It looked silly to have a userbase reading 31,124/100,000.

People were asking why we had so few users so the decision was made to lower the cap to something closer to what we had. It showed the way the site was heading to have those figures and also open sign up. But... Nothing could be done and nobody would listen.

As you pointed out green, it's only small things that needed to change. The core ideals of the site could have stayed in place without issue and would not of held the site back in any way.

And the removal of some power hungry staff members wouldn't have gone a miss. When I fust joined staff in the early days none of us were above the users and we kept to the same rule set. We didn't bend the rules to our favour or deliberately dangle carrots in front of users knowing they would take the bait and we could ban them :-(

This site became dedicated more to the forum and community bit over the years than the torrent bit why I think it never took of in the direction you are talking about Earwig. The reason being it never had dedicated coders in the sense that from the launch of the site. I remember when I first became staff and was promoted on the same day as vbg. We had basically the same problem as we did now.. we needed coders. We actually got (can't remember who now) one of the coders from TB for a brief moment. But it was pretty obvious it was not going to last. Many different volunteers helped out over the years and as such they had to continue previous work. TBy stood out from rest plain and simple for good or bad.

Man, this straight up makes me feel like shit. This is SUCH a great place, and I have so much history with it! To se the site closed down, when there obviously were plenty of ways to keep it alive makes me pretty upset, actually.

There were at least 3-4 people I know of that would have loved to code for this site. They begged to be allowed to code and I tried on their behalf but they were told no. Nobody could go anywhere near the code.

One of those people built my entire site from the ground up in the space of a couple of months :-)

hOg mate there were multiple people wanting to code but weren't allowed near the code.

I got promoted the same time as you and VBG and wee eck (DXC), kris, tokol  (and sorry if i forgot anyone) started compiling a to do list of tasks.  All of us were motivated and keen as fuck to get the site moving, fun fresh ideas were streaming on out and the forums were a friendly buzz of activity.  Then frustration hit all the effort and ideas were never implemented and all fell to the way side.  Some left due to these frustrations.  Every staff member had the same frustration yet never actually had the ability to do anything about it.  Potential coders were fobbed off year after year.  Frustration grew and grew.  What TBy could be now if things were different is something we will never know however the same problem is there from the day we started.  Fortunately this site had such an awesome community derived from torrentbits and that dwindled through the years but the die hard remained.  While I have a lot of anger over some things my time of staff has given me the chance to reflect and I kick myself daily for not doing things different or pushing for change harder.  Have a look back at DXC's posts (most wll have been moved to the bobs garden shed area so don't think you will have access as that's an admin area) but some may still be there.  Fresh great ideas.  The reason the garden shed was made up was my useless attempt to kirb the negativity for new staff coming on board, but pretty soon everyone gets sick of pushing an idea for it to not be coded and ignored.  I think that let down all the staff past and present and worse of all the community missed out a great deal as a result.

@ wiggy , yes and as admin i was often the one they came too and the bearer of bad news, shit like the wonderful "dev" site isnt ready etc etc.  Fuck me bottom line is the site coder wouldn't let any fuker near the code and never actually done fuck all himself but the "maintenance tasks"

BoB, Earwig

We had a great admin, you know who, who managed to get a hold of some old staff from TB. As I see, with the whole "TBy is the spiritual successor to TB" thing it was ever only meant to go in one direction. And what greater way to start off than with old crew anyway. I don't know what went on in the admin forums as I wasn't apart, but if things were as critical in staff, as they were at the time, they must have been hectic. I bet there were more than 3-4 people, I bet there were hundreds, the site just had different goals from the beginning, one dedicated essentially to creating a space for the TB community. I guess ultimately what this site needs are young people and not old tossers like us

#1537466 by justlooking (Power User) at 2013-07-25 20:35:48 (2 days ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I guess ultimately TB needed a guy like WhatMan from what.cd to take it to another level. From what I've read, that guy was determined to replace Oink, and did whatever it took, like allowing all the members to upload from their collections, and inventing Gazelle for the site to run smoothly. The result is a tracker that surpasses Oink and is closing in on 2 million torrents.

I think in a sense that is completely correct, some have overstayed on staff and are stale.  Fresh people are needed, but not moderators, its coders that's needed, ones who have a goal and a desire to make improvements.  I am not talking a complete overhaul just nice little additions.  Christ anythings better than nothing and that in turn motivates staff which comes across to the userbase in the forums, which prompts people to want to upload, chat and be part of the site.  In stead for the past fuck knows how many years we get philosophical debates and folk being banned for having a difference in opinion.  This site is everyones site, staff just care take it, at least that should be the case, unfortunately for some it was a power trip.
