This way Harper can cash in on the taxes generated.

I agree with this.  Government shouldn't be in the buisness of research soley for the sake of enlightenment.  On the other hand, useful things like disease or energy research that benefit people is a legitiamate use of taxpayer money.

How about mathematics or history research?

Quote:

"Scientific discovery is not valuable unless it has commercial value,"

Only a moron would give a statement like that. The march order in science has in most cased been following --> a new phenomenom has been found and it has been studied, then somebody has came out with an idea how to use this new knowledge in an application.
To set a specific goal first (commercial application) and then try to find solution how to make it happen would limit our scientific knowledge hugely and hinder the progress dramatically.

Quote:

You do realize that science in many cases is a cross platform, where a discovery in the other field provides information which can be then used elsewhere.
New knowledge which is only knowledge in the field it was discovered can provide something which can be then used when making both commercial and aiding applications.

Also the urge to know is in our genes and a wise society supports that very basic need, it makes the people of that society much more happy.

Science is a tool to find out how things are, a tool which we use when we try to find out the answers to the most grand questions we as humans have. It's the foundation which has brought us here, the curiosity and the will to learn. To make it a slave to commercial markets would be insane.

No, science is fucking bullshit. We all know that learning should be rejected. Let's all just worship this rock that sort of looks like a guy.

No, science is awesome. We all know that learning shouldn't be rejected. Lets all worship this rock that sort of looks like a guy. There is a darker history of science that isn't reflected in that romanticising of science above. Science has always progressed best in wartime and the US government did so up to and after WW2, Vietnam and under the cold war. And what about eugenics, the political effects of that scientific method that carried on long after Darwin. Historically it isn't true that it is science that has brought us here to this "point", it is much more complicated of course. Don't put science up on the ideological pedestal and hail science. Don't put those words in your mouth, TheBlues.

But the fact is that because of science our society is like it is today, undisputable fact.

Medicine, engineering (including military applications, the ability to print books, the ability to fly, internet, you name it), etc. etc.
Our society is what it is because of science and how it will be in the future also depens on science.

There is no dark history on science, it is only a tool to find out things, the dark history is made by us humans  who have used the knowledge aquired by science abusively.

What you are saying is just ridiculous and a pathetic try to make science look like religion (which in many cases has texts and dogma what makes people to do bad things, science has no such texts or dogma, it's only a tool to find out how things are).

Science is the only, the one and only way to find out how things are, period.
But it doesn't tell us what to do with that information (like religion in many cases does), that is up to us humans. And it's science which also has given us the information why we in some cases use the new information for bad things aswell as good things.

Quote:

Historically it isn't true that it is science that has brought us here to this "point", it is much more complicated of course.

The only complicated thing is the decisions we have made up based on the new information science has given us, but the groundstone still is science, without it, we wouldn't have anything to make decisions from.

Now go and pray in the corner, for forgiveness of your idiotic words (again).

@Sniper

Hold on, I'm not disputing that medicine, engineering, etc. haven't advanced our society. E.g. antibiotics and vaccines have a huge affect on society and our longevity. You can explain society from science alone, just like you can explain society using marxism as a principle of orientation. It won't give you the full picture. I can't explain the The Peace of Westphalia using science; in that case I can use historical methods to describe a series of historical incidents that came to have an affect on (future) society - and that wasn't related to science. Strictly speaking your "everything" is limited also. You are putting the science up on the pedestal.

Eugenics is applied science. If you don't agree that this type of science isn't "dark" or "unethical" or whichever word you prefer, then you and I disagree and I think you will find yourself in the minority. Humans abuse things and then it also makes sense to assume they can abuse something they have created; religion, science, political theories, etc. now step away from the computer, have a mint tea, some tissue and pick up a copy of Nature and do your "thing". Then afterwards put science up on the pedestal and repeat after me: HAIL SCIENCE

#1530858 by TheBlues (Power User) at 2013-05-14 17:50:00 (2 months ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

But you're missing a major thing here, hOG. Religion has no intrinsic value, but science does. We're not saying that religion can never be used for good and science can never be abused. But the scientific method gives us real validated facts about the world we live in whilst religion does fuck all. There's the fundamental difference.

Science is like a knife, yes it can be used for evil but it has an infinite amount of uses that are positive and beneficial for mankind. Religion is like claiming you have a knife when you actually don't, it can only be used for threatening and frightening people.

Parents 'tried to exorcise daughter, 10'
A couple living in Sweden have been charged with child abuse for trying to exorcise their daughter at age 10 because they thought she was a witch, a prosecutor said.

Religion is good as long as it is exercised as a hobby or used to start orgies. But when religion goes to your head and you start to believe stuff then it is very bad for you and for those close to you. Should be laws against letting people come in contact with religion before the age of 20 and should be taxed higher than alcohol and tobacco. Should also require a license of perfect mental health before you get to "preach" to others.

I don't agree that the information obtained from that field of science is dark or unethical.
Only when that information is used to do bad things it becomes bad, but it's not the fault of science, it's the fault of humans.
Nuclear physics is not dark or unethical even when it has provided us a nuclear bomb which then were used to kill people.
One can argue if using those a-bombs was unethical or not, but the field of science which provided the information certainly is not.

I don't drink tea and I have a real scientist (a biologist) available for doing my "thing", and she even shouts my name and rank while Im doing it (I have also heard her shouting jesus while Im on it, but that's taken care of with a little friendly slap).

Yeah, because the leader of an independent brigade mutilating a corpse means that democracy is impossible. It's not like every single armed conflict in modern history has been plagued by rapes, mass murders and other warcrimes regardless of whether the countries involved are democratic or not.

Just look at this news that just came out;

Japanese politician calls wartime sex slaves 'necessary'
"Japanese officials have distanced themselves from comments made by a prominent nationalist politician that suggested women forced to become prostitutes to entertain Japanese troops during World War II were "necessary."

Yeah, that's right. 200 000 asian women were forced to be sexslaves during world war II.

An influential Syrian-Danish politician is not immune against stupidity. I thought you were old as shit, how haven't you learned that argument of authority is a logical fallacy?

Okay, so since we are back to our seventh thread hijack.. I will joust your hypocritical mind  a) arab spring movement = democracy is a joke. b) I wasn't saying democracy is impossible in this connection (where you trip and fall) c) you might not know that the politician was positive about the opposition facing Assad at first, having democracy tattooed on his arm, hoping that it would come into fruition, but now has expressed his doubts (which is a legitimate thing to do) z) I have met him twice in person and is a legitimate mention by far working with democracy internationally. As for Japan, they were the most imperialistic nation prior to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, then they became practically pacifist. Maybe we ought to drop the a-bomb on Syria and get peace and democracy too..
