As of the news on the homepage, this sound very alarming.

Very very sad news indeed but fully understand the staff and the trouble they have to go through to keep the site up.

Yes, very sad to read it. What is the exact problem? You cannot receive money using Paypal? It's not entirely clear to me what the problem is - because I read there are enough donations.

God i hope its fixable. I know we had a discussion thread about this before, but are there any secure alternatives to paypal?

#1514861 by adapterDonor (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:14:29 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

Maby someone can host torrentbytes.net for free. If staff ask around thy might get it.

What's the problem? Providers want PayPal, TB doesn't want it? I am not familiar with PayPal so I assume it's a sharing personal info thing?

#1514863 by tokolDonor (Sarcastic Admin) at 2013-01-06 16:16:10 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

It is becoming impossible to pay the bills using paypal, yet it seems like the only possible/potential way of doing so. Running the community money through someones personal bank account or credit card is not exactly an option.

#1514865 by Stompalomp (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:20:18 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

Why not open a small business bank account in Torrentbytes name?

Doesn't have to be a registered co or anything as most banks offer SME/Sole Trader accounts.

I am really devastated at the moment. That news really hit me hard.

I know I am only a lurker here, but Torrentbits/Torrentbytes has been my family for almost 10 years. This community is a very bright, shiny little spot in an ocean of internet darkness.

I guess things never last forever.

I really hope you guys can find a solution, but if not...

I would like to thank all the staff, past and present, for their amazing work. And I would like to thank all the uploaders, past and present. You guys will always have a special place in my heart.

Peace,
Jean-Luc.

I so hope this will work itself out, I don't want to loose TB :tblove:
So sad news . . .

Put it up on kickstarter!

I remember the birth of torrenbytes, I kept hanging on an irc channel that discussed about the birth, the sign-up went apeshit and had to be done again, I also remember how awesome the staff were at tolerating all the bitching and moaning about "when when when" etc.

I love torrentbytes, this place just works. It's like a congress library for torrents, sorta.

I hope, as I guess everybody does, that this problems will sort out, but the staff are people too, and no site is worth unlimited hassle. All the best for everybody involved!

#1514873 by reborn (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:30:31 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

hmm, this must be related to fact PRQ loose their paypal account recently (there is article about it on torrentfreak). Since TB seems to be using PRQ services it directly affecting TB.

Maybe option would be just to move site elsewhere (to provider which still accept paypal) ?
I strongly believe there is still good, secure providers left (like hostkey in .ru or eRoot in .lu)

Some solution must be found... Cant believe site will close down after going strong for decades.

#1514877 by kristoficusDonor (The crust on a pizza) at 2013-01-06 16:34:22 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

Problem with that reborn is that we would still be using PayPal - we're not being hit by Paypal because we're using 'x' provider. They know we're a torrent site and no matter how we try and hide the donations they're still linking it back to us

#1514881 by Jerr (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:40:16 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

First of all I want to thank all the staff for the effort they have put in to this. I Hope they (and TB) will stick around for many years to come.

But in the unfortunate moment that TB will close its doors... where should I run to!? I Have been a member for some years now and I lost track of other sites.

Can someone recommend a site? Or will their be a solution for "all" members??

#1514882 by EbolaukDonor (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:40:53 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

What exactly is required then Kris? There are alternatives to paypal, i know a lot were discussed last year though. Don't amazon have a version for example? I also have seen something called Paydivvy and another called WEpay mentioned in random searches. Sorry if its been discussed before, Just tyring to help.

Also makes me think adult entertainment sites survive through this and other "special" content sites so it does make me wonder if TBy can adapt to something similar without causing staff headaches or any risk as it was before with paypal.

#1514883 by g1itch (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:50:35 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

So I guess to survive TB would have to switch to bitcoin friendly service providers?
These appear to be available for hosting and domain registry, what other services are we talking about?

Whatever happens, thank you all for over 8 years of awesome!

Yes. If the worst happens: can someone recommend an alternative to Torrentbytes?

This news feels as bad as the one, that Torrentbits got closed in 2004. :weep:

#1514886 by DXCDonor (The King) at 2013-01-06 16:59:05 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

How about setting up different methods of donations and near the end of the month transferring it to a Paypal account only staff is aware of to make the monthly server payment? This way you can even transfer the money to a bank account and then wiring it to a Paypal account.

#1514887 by hedegaardDonor (User) at 2013-01-06 16:59:26 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

What about getting a paypal mastercard, this you can use to pay on sites that do not accept paypal as payment method. Might be an option?

#1514888 by i0mega (Power User) at 2013-01-06 16:59:30 (6 months ago) - [Report]Top

This may be a stupid question but why cant we continue paying for the site through paypal? Why do we have to switch to something else?
To me it just doesnt make sense, could someone elaborate?
