Today, in the wee hours of the morning, a dev by the name of Wutangrza, was successful in recreating flukes1's 3.55 peek poke CFW. As we reported the other day, flukes1 had successfully made a LV1/LV2 3.55 peek and poke enabled CFW. However, due to legal reasons he decided against releasing it. Wutangrza was successful in repeating flukes1's process and has released a very easy to use patch, for the official 3.55 firmware. So what does this mean for the average user? It means that it is only a matter of time now, before apps like multiMan and others, will begin to work with this new CFW.

I don't mind waiting a little while until the majority of ps3 bricking bugs are sorted, like a few others here I have a release day console so waniko`s is almost certainly no good for me.

Either way, my guess is a week or two until we can safely install a custom firmware (all ps3 versions) and the popular backup managers work well.

Not doing anything to mine until I am confidant it will work without fault. I am in no hurry to play anything anyway ss no great loss for me.

The main reason I want to do mine is for when .MKV support is brought to the PS3

I think I will give the whole thing a miss, whats the benefits other than not having to buy games?

Being able to run .MKV files on it

Homebrew and shitloads of it and the obligatory media player homebrew app that will play .mkv, this is something I would personally guarantee, no way in hell we wont have a good media player coded for this.

And of course free games

Think is stuff is getting moved around, changed and fucked with at the moment, think of it like this, all the bits have been got, all were waiting for now is a nice package that fits it all in nicely and this is undoubtedly not far off because we pretty much have it now but naturally quite a few people are a bit cautious at first.

Once we have "the absolute best" custom firmware and things have settled down the flow of homebrew is going to be massive.

I would estimate within 5 maybe 6 weeks the vast majority of us here will have custom firmwares loaded onto our ps3`s, dongles will be a thing of the past and we will all live happily ever after hehe

#1369663 by unknown[29031] at 2011-01-18 20:42:17 (2 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Has there been any speculation about homebrew using both the PS3 and PSP together? Anything that might be cool enough to warrant the purchase of a PSP to go with the fully broken PS3?

#1369668 by unknown[9089] at 2011-01-18 20:53:54 (2 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I have no idea to be honest, fairly sure psx scene has a psp section though.

I was thinking maybe a slick remote for the media player, but it will be interesting to see what develops over the next few weeks/months. Thanks for keeping us up-to-date, dave!

I saw a post of a few ps3 hackers talking about this and the work required is far beyond what they understand of the system right now, we wont see mkv support for a very long time since they need to descypt and rewrite the whole gameos.

homebrew media player, its actually not very difficult apparently, hell they can emulate a wii so with that in mind do you honestly think a simple media player with .mkv support will be that difficult ?

I admit it may be much harder if you want the ps3 to play them from the xmb with no player loaded up.

just replace the mainplayer with homebrew one, pretty sure when all homebrew hell breaks loose mkv support is one thing that we will see in the near future.

im awaiting a (almost) failproof jailbreak method.

new one out

Jan 18, 2011 - 7:12 PM - by The Central Scrutinizer
A user by the name of "kmeaw" on IRC channel #ps3test has made it possible to run Backup Managers on Wutangrza CFW.

Basically it's a simple PKG you need to launch before running any backup manager. It will patch lv2 and add syscalls in memory. They are removed once you power off. Safe and efficient!

First run the PKG, then run the Backup Manager. When rebooting, you need to repeat the process.

Download: MultiUpload

More info (instructions): PS3 CFWs with backup managers
Quote:
Disclaimer: This package is for demonstration use only, or for running your own made software (homebrew). We do noit condone piracy and are not responsible of the small chance you may brick.

Original FW PUP md5 before patching: ca595ad9f3af8f1491d9c9b6921a8c61
Patched PUP md5 after patching: 2be5e87a22bf1e7f48e98fcabd38977b

If you are on Wutangrza+geohot fw, you dont need to flash the new firmware, just install the package, and run it every time the ps3 boots before running apps that need PL3.
Otherwise, it is suggested that you upgrade to 3.55, Upgrade to this patched PUP, then install the lv2.pkg.

This is only until apps are updated to include this patch themselves, as then you wont need to run the patcher on every boot.

For Stock ps3's

1. update to official 3.55
2. bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3CFW.PUP patchfile
3. Delete PS3UPDAT.PUP
4. Rename PS3CFW.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and that's it! You're ready to install
5. Install lvl2.pkg
6. Launch backups with manager

kmeaw's CFW is different from FLUKES1 and Wutangrza and anyone elses.

Basically kmeaws CFW has peek/poke and allows you to bypass PKG checks, like how it used to work on 3.41 . Therefore you don't need to sign stuff like Geohots CFW.

Wutangrza's CFW is basically what flukes1 released it just has peek/poke enabled but you can't install PKG's.

Geohot's CFW can be installed over the top on Wutangrza's CFW and allows you to install special signed PKG's.

This LV2.pkg patch can be loaded from any CFW that has peek/poke, and adds syscalls for backup managers etc.

SUMMARY :

On Wutangrza's/Geohot Firmware you have to use pkg's signed with geohots tools.
On Kmeaw's Firmware you can install any pkg. Like the ones from 3.41 and ones signed with geohot tools.

Thanks to PSX-SCENE user bigheads for the news tip!

Looks like's there's now pretty solid CFW in place:

I'm still waiting couple more days though :-)

None reasons to use cfw to play me2 if you got a dongle, fixed eboot out like every other game so works on 3.41.

I got mine working again, with the wutang CFW and the lv2.pkg

Gt5 is working but how come when I click on the community button it says "this feature is not available for this version". I'm assuming there is a game update for it, but how do I get it? I wanna race online!

I'm using the gt5 eu backup that of torrentbytes running on an US 80 gb fatty.

Probably something to do with region lock for online feature
