One of the few perks of having read the books is that it wasn't as apparent when reading!
Just wanted to see the scene come to life. And I thought they did it really well..

So apart from qbert95 who thought it was another predictable hour of television - anyone else enjoy this action packed episode? I think the Jaime + Dany scenes are continuing to be the high point of this season, and I like the history lessons they're sneaking into dialogue every now and then!

Agreed, the mention of the Targ babies was awesome, considering the importance of that story.

Well I think everyone knew that one way or another she wasn't gonna give away her dragon for sure but I didn't expect her to slaughter like everyone lol. Sick episode that last scene gave me goosebumps. Always just kinda waiting for her scene to come in the episodes, the other storylines seems rather weak at the moment.

Army+Dragons, lets fucking do this!

maybe I just watch too much tv that there are no more unexpected plots for me. Not only did I know that she was going to kill everyone the second she got the army, but also that she spoke the language the entire time.  The second that one slave master dude was calling her a slut in the subtitles I knew that was what they were setting up.

They decided to make up for the fact that the worst parts of seasons 1 and 2 were with the dragon girl by making anything in the west boring and her parts slightly more interesting in the current season.

What about Greyjoy being led right back to prison by the very guy who freed him, huh? Did you see that too?
I didn't expect that at all

I totally saw that coming as well - first the dude is not an unknown actor, second it was all too convenient. Also didn't the ambushed guys act like they knew him? Nothing to do with the books. Just a trope. Like how the dragon girl knew that strange language all along, what a tweest.

4 episodes to get to see the unsullied kill a handful of people for 30 seconds and people get virtual hard-ons. I guess when you are starving for a bit of action even mediocrity can make you drool.

Why would you even write such a comment?

the scene was epic not because of the dragon or unsullied, it was everything combined.

If you thought the only good part about the first 4 episodes was this 'mediocre' scene then you probably shouldn't watch the show (not sure how you read the books) because it doesn't get much better than this.

Epic?

There are a couple of more scenes this season that should be "epic" and all I can say is that they best not fuck them up as badly as they did this one. I didn't agree that the entire scene was not good, it's just that it surely should have been more perhaps people's imaginations are just way better than HBO's little budget

What was bad about that scene? What would you have done differently? I'm not trying to attack you, but It could perhaps make for a fine discussion I think.

longer? More gruesome? More detailed? I understand it's television and I understand but it was too weak and scaled down as the whole town was meant to be decimated and anybody not a slave killed etc. Perhaps they already spent the entire budget on forests and mud?

Let's break it down then, what was so mediocre about it.

The only things I can think of are that
A) Her knowing Valyrian & planning on killing the slavers was a bit predictable -- but that was simply a TV problem.
B) Drogon wasn't big enough -- which has been their decision really as to how big they should be at this point.
C) They didn't show another 2 minutes of Drogon turning the city into an inferno.
D) They didn't show another 10 minutes of the Unsullied slaughtering pretty much everyone who wasn't a slave in an entire city.
E) Inverting the order of Dracarys & slay the soldiers (not even sure if this was diff in the books)

C&D are probably due to budget & time. D furthermore was because they don't want people to think about all the potential innocents that could've been slaughtered by Dany's 'cruelty' because it was supposed to be her glory moment.

I thought the music, language, acting, and directing was pretty spot on. All this time I wanted to see Kraznys face melt off, and the scene was so good that that part was really icing on the cake not the main point of the scene.

Edit: Damnit, you beat me at replying! So your problem is with C&D.

yes

it was supposed to be a major scene for her and it felt rushed and over way too quick. But as I said it's all about the imagination and it's probably my fault for having read the books, but honestly even if I hadn't I think I would have felt a bit ripped off.

I can agree with you there, a lot of scenes in this season have felt quite rushed, including this one.

They probably could've cut some of Theon's crap to give this stuff more time, but I wonder if it was partially their decision to not draw out the fighting following the initial carnage. The climax of the scene was her Valyrian reveal, her command Dracarys & order to slay the city. It would've lost some power if they diluted the scene out by showing 5 minutes of Spartacus w/o the Spartacus.

They probably could've given it a bit more time, but I think they purposefully wanted to go the more cinematic route than actually showing the massacre. So I guess I partially agree with you there?

CGI and everything aside, it def was better in the books because well your imagination wins and more importantly, I really thought she was giving up Drogon even though in hindsight I can't believe I didn't figure it out -- so I was def more attached to the scene when reading it -- still, shortcomings of budget/time aside, not sure I would call it mediocre

This! Two episodes of this, this episode was probably 40% walking in the woods (Theon/Jaime), 30% prattling old lady and girls talk 10% Night's watch, 10% the hound's trial,  5% Bran having a bad dream and finally 5% Unsullied and Dragons...
