Having not read the books it is amazing how much hype the show does get. As for the fans, I don't think the series is that popular in America (season 1 had about 2.5 million viewers per episode; season 2 had almost 4 million), but the main audience is in Europe. For example the season premiere last year had 6.3 million viewers on Sunday night; how many more dvr'd it, watched the next showing on Monday night, or plan to watch it on Friday night on HBO on demand? As for why they dont get more episodes, for one HBO wants to make sure quality is top notch, which means that they would have to increase the budget of the show from ~$60M to ~$90M for the season.. a bit too much, as they probably wouldn't be able to increase the DVD price by the same amount to compensate. along with that, the writers already kill themselves writing and filming the 10 episodes for the year, I think they said in an interview that they would not be able to handle more anyway. Side note: For season 3, each episode is roughly 4-5minutes longer so we essentially get an extra episode when its added up for all 10.
