got a bipod, short barrel (didn't pay for that one), flashlight, new buffer spring for my stock, and a polished gas port on my M249 SAW

. also picked up a seal pup knife for my vest and a leatherman MUT EOD tool. no pics of the mut yet.

Before anyone says anything, I'm in the US Army deployed to Afghanistan .. I'm not some machine gun toting whack job.. well.. I am but I'm endorsed by the government

SA80's are nice weapons, unfortunately they fire 5.56mm too. I love how they have Fully Auto too.. Much better for room clearing and you can easily take a standard rifle and use it as a support/suppression weapon. You use a modified SA80 as a support machine gun, right? Our rifles only fire semi and 3 round burst.

most of the time they buy the stuff for us. anything that modifies the projectile or power of the weapon is illegal (goes against the geneva convention) and so my snub barrel had to be provided by the army. the grip and flashlight were provided by my supply guy. the buttstock and buffer and upgraded internals i paid for.

custom ammo and barrels are illegal. our ammo is designed to wound and incapacitate, not kill.. that way we're seen as a more humane force. 5.56mm was never designed to deal killing blows. it's a 22 calibre for f's sake..the kind of ammo designed to hunt squirrels and other vermin. i risk my life with crap calibre and power ammo so some pussy politician can look better.

i'll be carrying an M240B soon.. much bigger round. here's a comparison of the 3 ammo types i have. 5.56mm (M249 Machine Gun and M4 Rifle), 7.62mm (M240B Machine Gun and M24 Sniper), and 12.7mm (M2 Machine Gun and M95 Sniper) from left to right. in my opinion 7.62mm is the ideal calibre for dealing deadly blows. It's got the perfect balance of accuracy, range, weight, recoil, and stopping power. We started carrying 5.56mm because A) weak bodies couldn't carry the heavy ammo and B) NATO wanted us to become a peacekeeping and humane force, not a lethal one.
