Yeah but you don't buy a watch to check your phone for the time, do you?
Why it's important to know the time, you need to know when you get up so you can get to work, you need to know when to get to work, get off work to get the kids, to get to the shop before it closes, to catch a movie at the cinema - to name a few.
It's not always important to know the time but there is certainly a lot of time when you need to know.

Oh ... that..
I set the alarm on my cell phone to wake me up (I'm freelancer though so i wake up at around 4 pm because i work until around 3-5 am - i wake up anyways around 3.30 pm because of sun light)
while working i have the computer in front of me and the watch in the corner all the time
at the old job when people would start to get up from their desks I knew it was about 5.15-5.30 pm and time to leave (and had computers there to)
While outside I usually see buses stopping at bus stations and I know they stop once every 10 minutes so it's close enough... or i can just glance at the people's hands around me/
At home I usually leave the tv running and a popular tv news station here always shows the clock in the corner (even during commercials) so it's simple just to change the channel to it and see the time... if that station doesn't work 20% of the channels have teletext with time on them.

It just happens it's NOT possible to not have a clock around me whatever i do so I don't even own a watch anymore.

It's not perfect in direct sunlight, but you can still tell what time it is.
