Well if you can afford it then I see no reason not to get a little better gear. Unless ofc it would stop you from learning.

Arrived this morning.

Coolmaster HAF
Sabertooth Z77
i7 3770K
32GB Cosair memory
2 Samsung 120GB 840's
Cosair TX750M

Decided this year wasn't going to be like last year and spend 12 months figuring out which bits to buy. Just went for what I kept putting in my basket last year. Just got the OS drives for now the plan is to put 4 3TB drives in there over the next 12 months. I really, really, really hope I don't f()k anything up when building.

Built and doing it's first encode

Wasn't too impressed with the case to be honest. I've got an old Antec case, same size, that I was considering using at one point when purchasig the bits but decided to get a new case because of the cable management and USB 3.0 The 12V (?) lead didn't go around the back easily and I didn't want to force anything which I'm kinda not ok with. There was also only 1 2.5" drive position so the 2nd drive didn't get installed. I'm also not sure if I needed the TX750M.

I think the stock cooler is letting the temps get a little high, during load (encoding) the cores are hitting highs of 79C so don't think I'll be trying any overclocking just yet.

Not given it a good looking at yet but my DAW is a Q6600 and the encoding I've done on that seems to be around the same timewise, but I currently testing from a USB stick so that may be slowing it down. LMAO. Encoding Season 5 of Lost from blu-ray, 20 mins per episode. This thing flies!!

Just got to get some of those lights you young fellas stuff in there now :-D

Sennheiser HD598 headphones.

I already have one of the best budget sets of headphones (Samson SR850) which cost all of $40 delivered but I have always wanted to get a higher end headphone and see if there really is a difference.

Btw, I don't have it yet but I'm tracking it every day until it gets here.

They can't be compared. I don't know those samsung ones, but i'm pretty damn sure those sennheiser's will blow them away, not even in the same ball court.

(just some info, in case you don't know, or any one else is curious)
About the first time use, some brands have them factory "broken in", but you might wanna break them in yourself. If you've never done that before, its pretty simple. Hook them to a radio source (radio is recommended due to the broad variety of sound mix). Now, for a tight nice bass, you wanna break them in having a lower volume, while If you want a more loose bass, break them in with higher volume. For firm bass, find the volume where you normally would listen, and turn it a couple notches down. If you want looser bass, find your normal volume, and then crank it up a couple notches. Now leave them running with radio overnight. Do this for a couple, three days, and they should be prepared properly.

The Samson SR850 are Superlux OEM headphones which are very good for the price.  I've had them for about a year.  I use them for music and multi-player gaming.  These guys put me onto them.

Yep, I might do that because I have read how owners have broken headphones in more quickly by leaving them connected to a music source for the first week.
I hope the hd598 are really good and not just a little better because they cost $184 on sale.  That was just about all the money I got for Xmas.

Zyxel NSA310 single bay NAS.  Good for DLNA sharing around the house.  Not bothered about RAID / redundancy, backup - if the drive dies I'm not bothered.

Quit smoking a couple of weeks ago, and I've decided to use the money I save to get into the New 52 - grabbed these as a starting point. Next-up will probably be Swamp Thing & Animal Man, on the recommendation of pretty much everyone.
