I had a teacher when I was 14 or something who gave us an exam where one of the questions were;
"N�mn en k�nd neger-ledare."
Which translated from Swedish means "Name a famous nigger-leader".

I wasn't offended (because our teacher was so old that he was about to die soon anyway) but a girl in the class notified the media.

In my native language the word "negru" means black, there is no other word for the black color.

Wouldn't it be more correct to translate it into Negro, seeing as both terms excist in swedish too?

First of all, why should that be more correct just because it exists as an option?

Secondly, the word neger corresponds to nigger in terms of acceptance in society which is why it's a better translation. The whole point of me sharing that with TB was to highlight the offensiveness and therefore, if I have two ways to translate a word I should choose the word which has the closest level of offensiveness.

We don't have racists terms towards black people but we do have our own words that may be deemed racists.

Though only kids say them ...

For example "negrotei" (young blacks) or "tuciurii" (charcoal colored or smth like that) , both derogatory terms for young gipsy kids that wonder around with dirty clothes begging or collecting metal or just playing...

but as i said, they're not called openly or in press or by adults like this.,.
