I'm in my first year of Science & Engineering so I have roughly 2 years before I have to decide on a masters. When starting my masters, I had decided to choose photonics. Then I took the courses on condenced matter physics and the QFT (quantum field theory) course, and I loved them more than the optics courses. that's what made be choose. If you like and have an interest in what you're reading, then it will be simpler for you...
