How can i be that in the age of information that people are so ignorant and stupid? evolution is a scientific fact it's not an opinion or "theory" or something you can or can't believe in, its the fact.

just because you are to stupid to comprehend it doesn't make it impossible or false

I've met tons of ignorant religious folk in my time all over the internet, from the nutcase creationist to the pentecostal throw-money-to-my-prosperity-gospel believer, but you are certainly an example of an ignorant atheist.

This isn't really about atheism because you can apparently accept evolution and still believe in fairytales, im just amazed that our educational system (mainly Americas ) can fail so hard

No, it isn't about atheism, it's about images And what educational system are you talking about? Surely not the American one, you are Danish yourself. The whole age of information age is misunderstood. Information travels faster; whether that is the right kind of information is always the question. Propaganda travels fast too, whether that is atheist or theist or anti-theist.

Bah.

i like the images, they are usually pretty funny, my problem is statements like shawnspree's & co that are so unbelievable dumb that even my preschool teachers would have failed my ass if i said it so i am talking about the educational system that apparently failed miserably when they tried to teach him biology

You are missing my point completely, Forcing someone to see the truth and stop believing in lies isn't really forcing "dis-belief" it's forcing reality.

I'm the kind of atheist that thinks that even discussing religion vs atheist is a complete waste of time.
I have exactly the same feeling about raging atheists/religious ppl. ----> Get a life!

"Oh! Shouldn't you believe in some god? Hmm no? Then you're an atheist!", oh i'm glad someone found a term for it coz i wouldn't really bother... So, hum, what's on tv?
This is basically the way i feel about this.

@hOG: I don't really know what you believe, but I think skrimsli meant that the burden of proof lies with the religious people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophic_burden_of_proof wrote:

This burden of proof is often asymmetrical and typically falls more heavily on the party that makes either an ontologically positive claim, or makes a claim more "extraordinary"[4], that is farther removed from conventionally accepted facts.

As in, religious people claim that there is a god whilst I or agnostic atheists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_atheism) only claim that there isn't indication of the existence of a god and therefore the natural position would be to not believe in them.

@THEBiZ: I can argue that everything is a complete waste of time because that's generally what life is; a waste of time. I do what interests and amuses me, and these discussions certainly do that.

i've used to be like that but lately just become hard to ignore because religion is corrupting our educational system and basically society. i dont want my future children being raised up in a world were creationism is taught in science classes as a equally rational theory as evolution

@K3np4tch1
Exactly!

Just post some damn pictures.

@FFF
Yes, i agree, that's all debatable.
But if you just raise your kids the way you feel about it, everything will turn out ok... No one will indoctrinate your kids on religion or racism or any other thing unless you want them to. Eventually everything will evolve to a point where religion and atheism will fuse, and all that will remain will be the common positive moral standards between religion and atheism. Meaning, good and bad will be just that, and being a follower of god A/B or C won't mean anything.

It is not, My point is certain religions ignore scientific facts. I never said atheism is the only explanation. (it just is the most likely)

skrimsli wrote:

Note: I'm mainly referring to those that believe in a young earth or pretty much most of what the "holy books" teach about the world.
So I see your theist/atheist/anti-theist, and prefer to think of it as theist/atheist/anti-ignorance & indoctrination.

So you see, if you had read most of my post you would have seen I was targeting the people in religion that choose to ignore all facts and blindly accept the man made bibles as the word of god.

I never claimed to be atheist either, If I had to pick though.. it would probably be atheist leaning more to the side of anti-ignorance and indoctrination either that or Thor. I have more respect for religions with multiple gods than a single god because it encourages people to think for themselves and not just say "god did it". (same with atheism)

Where the fudge do you live? Not in DK I can tell.

@skrimsli

You argued that "can't really force "dis-belief" onto someone because it's backed up by evidence". This is what I have a problem with and I backed it up by historical evidence. Read about Stalin's Rusisa if you like, or don't.

it's not that bad yet but its going in that direction, teachers are trying to avoid talking about anything that contradicts religion because of fear of being called a racist or upset the religious communities

All I have against religion is that it promotes a way of thinking that is detrimental to society. It's the single largest threat against the advancements of science. And being a scientist (at least I will be in 5 years), that is not kewl.

I did and it seems awesome, but I still don't see it as forcing "dis-belief" I see it as forcing reality. Like TheBlues pointed out, the burden of proof lies on the people making these outrageous claims. Saying that the earth is flat or not doesn't make either true, but by backing it up by evidence you can clearly see that it is not flat. Forcing people to see the truth about the earth not being flat, is not forcing "dis-belief" it is forcing reality/anti-ignorance.

So for example if I said the world was created by a magical spoon fighting a machine gun I would have to prove it, it is not up to you to disprove it. Forcing me to see that the magical spoon fight really didn't create the world is not forcing "dis-belief" it is forcing reality, even if there is no better answer.

Really? A couple of years back the Muslim Atlas of Creation were sent to our country's schools and universities and not one of them accepted it (and those who grabbed it presented it only to the class out of curiosity). Not once in public schools have I heard of an incident where they teach creationism We are the second greatest nation of evolution-believing people in the world, Iceland is the highest according to statistics. I won't google it, but you can find it out for yourself (and of course if memory serves). I think you are really exaggerating here. The only threat of creationism is coming from private schools that permit this, but those are few and in between and I have only heard of one that did -- and went through quite a fuzz in the media. I think your are criticizing our country's education system and where it is going unfairly.

@skrimsli

That you think the atheist propaganda must have been awesome in Stalin's Russia is precisely the answer I was looking for

i didn't say that we teach creationism, i said that teachers are starting to avoid teaching stuff that conflicts with religious views and im afraid of that can evolve into something like teaching creationism or something similar the american educational system.

anyways i doubt this is the appropriate thread for that discussion

Awesome != good.

random dictionary wrote:

awesome
1. inspiring awe: an awesome sight.
2. showing or characterized by awe.
3. Slang. very impressive: That new white convertible is totally awesome.

For example, When a nuclear bomb goes off that is truly awesome. Because it inspires awe.

random dictionary wrote:

Awe
1. an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like: in awe of God; in awe of great political figures.
2. Archaic. power to inspire fear or reverence.
3. Obsolete. fear or dread.

I am going to stop talking about this now because if I don't I'd probably end up discussing this forever and this is not the place. In short I think atheist propaganda takes guts to do and is far better than religious indoctrination. But this is not the place, Feel free to PM me if you had a point to make.
