Harry Brown - 9/10

Very much like Taken in terms of story structure, but instead of girl-trafficking it's rioting, druggy youths.  Michael Caine was badass in it.  I liked it even more than Taken.  Some of the parts would make you cringe because of how brutal and realistic they were.

Defendor : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1303828/

with a seemingly unstoppable slew of super hero type movies, this one manages to bring something different to the genre. it wasnt amazing, but i wasnt boared whilst watching it and didnt feel my time wasted when it finished. as usual harrelson is uber.

Ironman 2 - 8/10

I really loved the first movie, and have watched it more times than i care to tell! This movie was just as great! Funny, great action sequences, decent story line. Another great Robert Downey Jr. performance, but also surprisingly good performance from Mickey Rourke who managed to pull off a quite frightening, yet amusing bad guy act.

If you loved the first movie, you will definately love this one too, but i imagine if you're like me if you haven't seen a movie yet you stay very very far away from this topic so you wont see this untill you've seen the film anyway!

Enjoy

Kick-Ass - 4˝/10
This is so schizophrenic. There's this certain point in any movie that poses as a parody at which if the filmmakers don't change up the act or end the film the jokes will become tedious and non-existant and I will as a viewer start viewing the movie more as the product that it tries to mock rather than as a parody all the way to the end. Kick-Ass goes over that line wearing a jetpack and never turns back, continuing onwards in a linear straight line, never checking the fuel meter to see that the fuel has ran out several miles ago. Everything starts of well enough, portraying the same type of restrained storytelling as is present in the comic. But then by the end we literally get the aforementioned jetpack and other things equally outrageous. What happened here? My guess is that quite frankly you can not film the comic as it is. You need to cut and change things. However in doing so, you should aim to keep not only the parodic tone, but the more subtle moments in the story. Now everything that wasn't parody, action or generally hilarious, has been cut out. Kick-Ass feels more like a series of scenes made out of "teh awesum", and without this good red line (in the comic the character of Kick-Ass himself) keeping it all together, everything just falls apart like an IKEA chair without nuts and bolts.

EDIT: Edge of Darkness - 8/10
It's funny how something can be refreshing by being a rehash of something that hasn't been done in ages. Edge of Darkness is pretty much just a 90s conspiracy thriller made with today's technical advantages, and without a romantic interest played by Meg Ryan. It's also refreshing because in this world full of posterboys and shiny teeth, this entire film is populated by men who are either fat, ugly or old. I love it! The performances are charismatic, the action is gritty and the plot is surprisingly simplistic and jumps over what most conspiracy thrillers always screw up with; the convolusion. Pretty much any one of these in the 90s was so chock-full with plot twists that you couldn't follow them properly. Now with this film you get a really clear and understandable focus point with Gibson's character, that we follow all the way through, only occasionally sidestepping to see some important stuff. The dialogue is surprising with bits of philosophy (probably stolen from the british original) and delivered excellently, especially by Gibson, who does his best role since Braveheart. I really only have issues with minor things - a shot there, a shot here. The conspiracy also ends abruptly, albeit understandably. One thing; I love how the imdb page has quotes that make this look like the worst one-liner throwing 80s action movie ever.

Agree, Edge of Darkness was better than expected, just proofs that you shouldn't trust the IMDB scores.

Edit: Just to point out, I'm the new generation, and I couldn't stop feeling like I was watching a Taken wanna-be : <

Edge of Darkness - Gibson's latest, solid action flick, reminded me remoteloy of "The Ransom" 8/10

Kick Ass - Despite the sucky name, the movie indeed did kick ass 9/10

Valhalla Rising - Story of group of religious nutjobs descending in to madness! Viking theme. Allthough Vikings is something i've always got some weird kicks out of, this movie just sucked, boring as hell. 3/10 Mads Mikkelsen did manage to keep his mouth shut for the whole movie, bad ass role from him

The Hurricane - Denzel Washington playing the role of Rubin Carter, welterweight boxer who got sentenced to jail for a few decades. Innocent. Most likely a story everybody who's even somewhat intrested in boxing has heard of, loved the movie! 8/10. (the Bob Dylan song is great too)

How to train your Dragon - Shit rocked! 7/10

Severance - Comedy/horror worth a shot, blood shits and giggles for everyone! 8/10

I watch too many movies to remember them all !

Me And Orson Welles - 8˝/10

This is a fantastic picture, but what makes it so is the performance of Christian McKay as Orson Welles. He is not Christian McKay, he is Orson Welles. His performance is so powerful and charismatic that every lie the man spouts out soaks into me like a bullet to the flesh of a zombie brain. Speaking of zombies, we also have one in this movie named Zac Efron. I think he did some musical in high school or something and everyone hates him now, but I don't really mind the guy. When he's acting, he does it pretty well, but he plays it too low-key. Especially next to the abritarily insane Welles, he sometimes seems like the literal zombie just mumbling through his lines. It's good that Linklanter's colour scheme brings great detail and vividness to the picture, as otherwise everyone opposite Welles might come off as monotone or low-key. Now with clever appliance of camera tricks and other acting-external aides everything balances out. But in the end we get this film that is hugely entertaining to any Welles-fan or theater-fan, but what's the main point of this movie? What is it saying? I don't know. It makes very interesting observations on fame and Welles's mental condition both in literal and allegorical form, but what it all amounts to... I don't know. And that's a pretty big problem when your film is majestic but doesn't seem to have a real message of any kind to it.

The Messenger - 10/10

Ben Foster pulls off the role of his career so-far as a depressed army soldier thrown back home after an accident and forced to join a military branch that informs the next of kin of dead soldiers of their passings in the battlefield. The Messenger is nothing short of utterly amazing. I would call it similar to Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter, albeit this is far more downplayed and down-to-earth than that three hour epic. This film is also a social and pscyhological study on the effects of war to the relatives and the returnees. When compared with Deer Hunter, this film cuts away with two things narratively. First of all, we all have seen news clips, read stories or seen films about this war. We know what it's about. That's why we see absolutely no war-footage at all during this movie. It improves the pacing, but also when we finally hear what happened in the war to Foster's character to drive him into this state, it's vivid and powerful despite being just a story told in a 3am semi-drunken state. Secondly, it rids of the set-up that happens during the first hour of Deer Hunter, during which we get to meet the characters and learn of their relationships. Since Foster's character starts this film from nothing, it is only appropiate that we do this as well.

To an average film, this would add an element of mystery. Not in The Messenger. That would be too sensationalistic. It is impossible to notice how much attention to detail has been put into the script, acting and camera work to great an impression of realism so strong that after twenty minutes of relatively passive watching I couldn't help but be involved not only emotionally but thought-wise to the events of the film. It avoids perfectly what I thought it would be; a vignette of scenes where Foster and his partner, played by Woody Harrelson, go around telling people of the recently diseased. Instead it becomes this truly immersive, involving, thoughtful and most of all shocking experience. It is not shocking with sensationalistic images of war and death. Not with outrageous special effects. It does what very few films have done in history really. It manages to be shocking, not disturbing, in an emotional level that grasps me as a film-watcher in way few films can.
