I Love You Philip Morris - 3/10

Some films, I think, require a certain amount of empathy to be put from the viewers into the main character for the movie to work. Some films need the viewer to care to some extent so that the movie would be enjoyable and viewable. I believe empathy is more a direct result of understanding, rather than relating to a character. Hence, in order to emphatise with one, we need to understand the reasoning someone has, and to some extent agree with it. This is the failure of I Love You, Phillip Morris. It has a main character who is a kleptomaniac pathological liar who abuses all those around him compulsively. This story is played off as a sweet romantic comedy. That's where the failure comes it. In this genre I believe it is vital, unless you're specifically making a self-aware point of obnoxiousness, that I can understand and emphatise with the main character. Jim Carrey in this flick is more of an anti-hero than anything. And the thing with great anti-heroes as always been that they're moreso victims of their own stupidity or their enviroment. Carrey's character is a ponderous man who has thoroughly soulsearched his own being, still coming out as an utter and complete obnoxious douchebag. He is just unlikable, and the movie consistently tries to make me care for him. I really, really hated that guy by the end. There is no meaning or message to the way he is, he's just an asshole that, via manipulative narrative techniques, we're supposed to emphatise with. Fuck that.

Know Your Mushrooms 7/10

Documentary about a few hippies and a mycologist at a fungus festival exploring the reasons behind America's phobia about eating mushrooms and other fungus.  (edibles, not psychedelics) I gave it a 7 our of 10 because not only was it educational but was well put together, had a good bit of humor, and had some funny computer animations.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons it's labelled as a musical (I know, GENIUS!! right?)

Mulholland Drive - 9/10 (Upon first viewing) best surrealistic movie I've seen!

Shutter Island - 9/10

Really enjoyed this film, especially the ending. Not sure they could have made it any better to be honest. I thought Di Caprio was pretty damn good :-/

Yeah... You're an absolute genius (Note - Heavy use of sarcasm & blatant lies)... I meant I just wasn't expecting every darn dialogue spoken in lullaby...

Don't worry if  you're ashamed of it, he is a good actor, what can you do

And @XacT: Actually I was referring to their labelling as being genius but whatever.

and @topic: Delicatessen - 7/10. AWESOME art direction, direction of photography, color manipulation was JUST perfect (from previous experience I find that Jeunet tends to overdo it, but here it was great! This is seriously one of the best looking movies out there). But I simply can't rate it higher because I thought that the characters were too godamn unstable, they were acting so unrealisticly and changed so much so often, it felt as if an hour of it had been cut or something :S. The plot was nothing spectacular either, but it was pretty good, it's mostly just the characters' behaviours that really bog down the movie for me. Might rate it higher upon a second viewing.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

6/10

Went to cinema to see it and my god, wish I saw the 3D version now. Wanted to see an action movie and I really enjoyed the action scenes and sequences, and the CGI was absolutely top-notch fantastic. Woman who played Io was hot. I like Worthington's acting and on-screen presence.

Some parts were a bit cheesy though and did indeed feel a bit rushed. Good enough I would like to watch it again when a 1080P torrent comes around, but I was honestly expecting an awful lot more.

How to train your dragon

9/10

I'm really glad I went and watched it in 3D, would've been a good movie regardless but the 3D just completed it. The story was a bit predicatable but it had enough twists to keep me genuinly interested. If you're going to go to the theatres instead of watching at home I would defo recommend this one !

Mike Bassett, England manager - 8/10

It was hilarious, the mockumentary and semi-realistic approach was wonderful and the comedy was great fun too.

Unforgiven - 8/10
I think I once saw or heard someone describe Unforgiven as a representative of the anti-western genre. That is more or less a hundred percent accurate. The film decimates the western as a genre by introducing various cliches and landmarks of it and then deconstructing them by taking them to surprising turns. It introduces legends and stories, only to have reality kick those stories several new holes into their faces. It's one of those guy-movies, where women are pretty and vague and men just beat them up or fuck them without much remorse. People are killed, but interestingly enough it is completely non-glamourised. We get this perspective through very well from the eyes of a writer-character who writes tall tales of the old west only to have his realities shatter in front of his very eyes. I love that part. However there are a few issues. For one, I thought the cinematography was very flat and lifeless. One of the deconstructive elements here is that the west is ugly, however I don't think it should be devoid of the concepts of space. I never got the feeling that this film was three dimensional so to speak, to me everything from the saloon interior to the mountains in the horizon seemed more like matte paintings with only the characters standing out. I don't know what particularily caused this effect, but I just didn't enjoy this film that much because of it.

Don't take this the wrong way (I like reading your reviews), but could you please split the "wall of text" up a bit. Pretty please.
I think more people will read it then. :-)
