2010 - 7/10

Enjoyable enough. Much more of a normal movie when compared to the predecessor but maybe that's not such a great thing after all.

Invictus 7/10 - Was okay, but a bit flat. And the rugby scenes weren't very good.

First off, yesterday I stared at Fantastic Mr. Fox. As a fan of Dahl's writing in general and stop-motion when done properly, this thing really hit my love-bone like an expensive korean prostitute! Fantastic Mr. Fox is definately one of the best looking films in recent years, and as far as stop-motion in general goes, it is astonishing. The attention to detail that creates this rugged, but charming and enticing look to a completely unique story is baffling. This is a perfect film for children, however as an adult I did see one issue with it. Kids can watch non-stop action for 90 minutes, but I have a problem with that no matter how well it's made. This movie has a rather original pacing, as it is literally just straight out insanity from after the first 10 minutes to the very end. We might stop for a toast every once in a while, but the axhiliration certainly took the better of me by the end. Still, everything else from the voice acting to the animation is absolutely spot on for a story like this. I especially liked the small little intricate pieces of dialogue where the animals acknowledge that they are just that and nothing more - animals stealing from humans. The eating and hissing scenes are also the funniest in the entire movie just because they encapsulate this bizarre contrast this film is made of so perfectly. It's about humanity VS animals in more ways than just farmers VS foxes, the battle also reigns within the animals.

Watched Star Trek: First Contact. Why is Neal McDonough in this movie? I don't really care for the reason, but the outcome is boombastic! This is a really good sci-fi actioner that's kinda brought down by the silly sideplots and shabby CGI. The good stuff is fantastic, Stewart pulls tour de force-ian acting as Picard and especially that insanely emotional scene with her and Lily sticks out as a great moment. The action scenes are nice and varied from space melee combat to traditional shooting, all of which is edited nicely in an unsurprising and clean-cut way. What brings everything down though are the misadventures of Ryker&Co. on earth. The saviour of humanity being a cowardly drunk is a stupid sideplot that literally doesn't go anywhere, and ends with him being shot in the back. After that it's like nothing ever happened! What the hell? From Ronald D. Moore I wasn't expecting this bad a sideplot. It seems the only reason a lot of the earth-scenes exist is because they had Cromwell in the cast and needed to really cash in on that prospect. Also, I have to nag a bit about the CGI. The practical set and prop design is great, which makes all the CGI that invades it seem very pervasive (the smoke in the end most prominently) and poor in comparison. I also didn't feel that positive about the ending, it really lacked a punch. But still, everything else works and works pretty darn well I might add!

Also bothered watching 2012. I will not deny that when I see massive amounts of destruction reigned upon all of the known world, I could do much else than stare in awe. It looks great and it is enjoyable to gawk at. Then John Cusack runs away from the demolishment in slow motion and I can laugh my heart out, what a perfect combo! So yes, while 2012 is immensely retarded, it still is at the very least rather entertaining. People die who don't usually die in disaster movies in surprising situations, and the disasters reign from huuuuuge explosions to tsunamis so the variety is there. There's even a slight amount of emotion involved, because when you have a topic so final as the apocalypse, of course the movie will be relatively touching in the sense of me going "This is so sad" when people die for no reason, but that is a feat that I really would not attribute anything of to this particular film. Most holocaust movies are sad too but that's because they're about the holocaust, it kinda defaults the flick into being even remotely emotionally involving. The bad stuff is mostly in the first 40 minutes which are just build up, as the script isn't on full-retard/explosions-mode and tries really poorly to develop the characters. After that, it's smooth and crisp all the way through. I would've wished that we would've seen more R-rated stuff though, we really see very few people get killed on-screen, which is kinda lame. Sadistic request, I know.

Thanks, I've been writing to various places about the last watched-stuff for years now so I figured one more wouldn't hurt

Today, Watched Thirst. Interesting. It certainly does deviate from the norms of vampire flicks even if it doesn't exactly revolutionise anything. It'll surely be surprising and refreshing to those bored of watching the run-of-the-mill vamp stories of today, but I wouldn't know since I'm not quite stupid enough yet to be suckered into Twilight. I didn't like how it really feels to me that Park just looses control over this movie around the second act. It degenerates into chaos, much like our main character, only to have some form of stupid redemption by the end. Yet oddly before the chaos starts this movie is boring and predictable. Narratively it steps all the wrong steps, but because it's also the only reason why it deals with some of the interesting things it deals with, should I still give this movie a recommendation? Dilemmas like these give a critiquing person such as myself quite the issue. I'd say see it if you are a fan of character studies. The relationship between the main characters is very fluent and logical, but not all too predictable after the beginning. I especially love the disintegration that they undergo before some murdering goes afoot.

Also watched Knowing today. I really like and adore what it is trying to be. I think a lot of the attempt goes to Alex Proyas's credit, but nothing he does to salvage this saves the film from the fact that the script is uninspired garbage. I love some of the dramaturgical turns the story takes, but the screenplay never manages to actually make me care about any of them. This is a film that never ever pulls you in to it's world. You stand there staring at it from a purely outside perspective, and it just isn't that much fun. If there would appear to be some drive behind this movie, it would possibly be great if some of the over-explaining of the ending and a few stupid things were cut. Now, however, it is a very good looking film that tries too hard to be a thinking man's sci-fi when the screenplay just doesn't allow for that at all.

So, uhh. I watched [REC]2. I don't want to admit that, but shit. Overdevelopment, people! That's our word of the day. How do you screw up a concept as simple as raged zombies versus desperate and unlikely survivors? Why, you turn the zombies into demon-possessed souls and the survivors into armed grunts. While you're at it, remove the feeling of being there and despite being shot in the same way as the first one, make most of the film seem more like a really shaky regular film instead of making it something of an eyewitness account. And if that isn't enough, throw horrible charecterisations into the mix with the most asshole-ish priest ever and the most inconsistent SWAT-team leader who pretty much throws their orders out the window after 15 minutes but yet insists that his only teammate carries not a gun but a huge camera to document everything. This entire film, the basis of why things are being shot on film, is so sketchy and never, absolutely never, explained that this combined with the outsider-feeling of watching the flick just bites a huge chunk out of the immersion. Not to mention the supernatural-stuff in the end when the people hunt things in night vision. The ending of [REC] implied some things, this literally shows them in explicit detail for 90 minutes and it's a bore whenever zombies aren't being shot. There is no desperation, and the only reason these people seem to get killed is their own incompetence and stupidity. This is nothing like the first film, and it just really, really sucks despite having a few interesting ideas regarding, for example, the fact that there are different narratives. Still, it just sucks and pretty much takes a huge dump on the original's existence.

sukiyaki western django - 9/10

i have seen it before but it's worth a watch once in a while. takashi miike explores the loss of cultural identity with humor and violence. mixing elements from yojimbo, henry vi and classic spaghetti western with 12th century japanese clan wars. it's extremly enjoyable. very bloody. and very, very funny. check it out if you haven't seen it.
