I have to agree with you regarding you're statement.

Once you get potentially good with Linux, You can do allot of expectations project as Linux experiences are valuable for there knowledge.

Keep in mind it's not very easy to learn as it can take 1 Year to consider you're self a Linux user.

whats hard about SSH'ing to your server ip and entering your username and password? That's all it takes...

once you're connected you can install anything you want, through an easy command - depending on what distro you use.

I don't get how people can complicate stuff so much...

SSH > server ip > username > password > connected > install rtorrent > start seeding.

takes all of 5-10 mins.

lmao, it's pretty much:

apt-get apache, mysql and the php modules. Use Aptitude if you need a gui to make it easier.
wget torrentflux
untar torrentflux
mv /var/www
follow torrentflux instructions.

Of course it'll be hard to tweak but you don't need that for a personal seedbox. Installing KDE and all that stuff is just unnessecary steps to further confuse you.

Anyways i have a serious issue with Hetzner right now:

About a week ago my server started shutting down or restricting all access to all services. It's not until i do the automatic restart in the control panel that i'm able to gain access to the server.

When i get back online i take a look at every file and each log entry just stops at aproximately the point i lose connection to the server, then it starts logging again when i get the restart event in the logs.

I've tried reinstalling the OS, but since the site is german i have no idea of what to do when i'm in rescue mode, and it also unexpectedly shuts down in rescue mode and resets to my current OS.

I tried openening a support ticket and i got an email stating my bandwitdh was now being limited to 10Mbit/s Half-Duplex and that i would need to start a new support ticket to raise the limit, and i haven't even used over 100GB that month. I've tried explaining it to them again but as of yet i have not recieved a response.

So any of you got any experience with Linux unexpectedly shutting down the computer/services without any logentries of it?

Example of my /var/log/syslog:

It stopped again around 26th february 22:17 GMT+1, and i used the restart method provided by Hetzner, and resumed operations today 18:51 GMT+1

Feb 26 22:39:01 localhost /USR/SBIN/CRON[4139]: (root) CMD (  [ -d /var/lib/php5 ] && find /var/lib/php5/ -type f -cmin +$(/usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime) -print0 | xargs -r -0 rm)
Mar  1 18:51:29 localhost syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu7: restart.
Mar  1 18:51:29 localhost kernel: Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.15-26-amd64-server

Edit: It went down at 18:56 GMT+1 again, so after 5 minutes of usage it just went down.

Newest log-entry, the oldest logentry from before the shutdown or whatever is the last entry of the startup sequence:

Mar  1 18:51:37 localhost kernel: [   67.241888] eth0: no IPv6 routers present
Mar  1 18:58:46 localhost syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu7: restart.

Sounds like it isnt just pretty much apt-get ... etc

=P

I would help you, but i have never had a problem similar to that.  And yes, KDE was necessary because torrentflux is a piece of sh*t in terms of scalability. Try putting 6 users on it, watch your server grind to a halt and have s**tty xfer speeds.

Trust me, i ran a seedbox using TF for 5 months.

try looking at /var/log/messages and look for the dates and see if a program is starting that screws stuff up.  Chances are, it is a problem with your ethernet interface (it may be hardware)

Thats mostly because of the default client vanilla torrentflux uses, tornado. With torrentflux-b4rt mainline and transmission offer much better results.

Polleke  -

I did have transmission as the primary client being used =)

I've been running my server at Leaseweb (http://www.leaseweb.com) for 6 months using Torrentflux-b4rt (http://tf-b4rt.berlios.de);  I also have a server with The Planet (http://www.theplanet.com) which runs the same piece of software -- both boxes are usually leeching/seeding >20 torrents, and have lots of users.

The overheads associated with putting X.org, KDE and all its dependencies on a server are horrific.

I've been using a couple of servers to leech/seed ever since I joined Torrentbytes more than 2 years ago. They're an excellent way to torrent, albeit quite expensive, and I highly recommend Leaseweb as my "provider of choice" at the moment -- much cheaper than The Planet, and the boxes just work.

http://www.leaseweb.com/index.php?p=express1   << 512 RAM, 1TB Xfer for 39EUR/mo
http://www.leaseweb.com/index.php?p=express2   << 512 RAM, 2TB for 49EUR/mo

They have a bunch of more expensive offers, including the server I'm on; these are for if you feel you need more RAM (recommended!), bigger disks or even more transfer (4TB - 12TB). They also do 1000Mbit.

Just got this email from hetzner, i try running it through google but i'm still unsure:

Hetzner Root Server DS 3000
(DS 3000 mit Hardwareausstattung ab 01.04.06):       49 Euro

So does this mean they're raising our fees to 49 euros now?

#787367 by unknown[25007] at 2007-03-02 17:17:21 (6 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

No idea, contact them and see?

#787368 by unknown[58044] at 2007-03-02 17:19:13 (6 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

this means that DS 3000 with hardware equipment is 49 Euro from 01.04.06 .

The reboot problem seemed to resolve itself when i started doing some additional troubleshooting(Curse you murphy's law).

So i've decided that i'll probably want to reinstall the OS to enable raid support and get a clean slate on the system.

But their guides are pretty sparse and in german, so i'm wondering if anyone got some detailed guides for installing a new OS remotely through their rescue system, preferably Ubuntu or Gentoo.

Why can I not add a torrent from it's URL on TB? I can add torrents from their URL on other torrent sites...

Is there anyway around this? Maybe wget?

vnstat is perfect.

That's because you need to login Phixion. You could probably do it with some curl magic.
