Well i got a server now, and i'm running bittornadocurses on it, but it seems that i don't get more than 4 peers, resulting in a very small upload rate, i'm not sure if there's anyway to improve it

If you're using a linux server, chances are that RDP isn't supported, especially since you're probably using a protocol.

If you want to connect, usually through SSH, then use PuTTy.

I was running a server from LT a few months back, for about 3-4 months I uploaded about half of everything on the tracker hehe

I used LT because my scene axx was at LT...

I don't know anything about linux so I was using windows web and remote desktop. Using utorrent and flashfxp/core ftp pro (only multi thread ssl ftp program out there I belive). So basically I was using the seedbox just like I was using a home computer.

lt is expensive but it's a quality network...

before I used redhotservers.com and maybee my dl speeds were a bit worse than they should of been because I was encrypting the transpheres but I was only using about 2TB a month even though it was unmetered, sometimes I saw it go up to 9MB/s but most of the time it would go about 4-6... partially the torrents fault... but LT goes real fast all the time They (redhot) don't charge any extra for windows web!!

edit: LT being www.layeredtech.com

  • Provider: LeaseWeb.
  • Server: Express Server 1 (it's not always available as it sells out pretty fast).
  • CPU: 1 x Athlon 64 3000+.
  • RAM: 512 MB DDR.
  • HDD: 1 x 160GB SATA.
  • OS: Debian (Linux).
  • Speed: 100/100Mbps.
  • Actual speed: I've hit 100Mbps both ways a few times, but it mostly hovers around 20-50Mbps. It very much depends on the swarm of the torrent.
  • Monthly bandwidth: 2000GB.
  • Monthly price: €49 (click here to check your currency) - paying VAT is for suckers.
  • User since: October 2006.
  • Torrent client: torrentflux-b4rt, which is based on the original TorrentFlux. b4rt has a lot of features that the original lacks.

LeaseWeb is a great provider. I looked around quite a bit before finally deciding. The price-to-quality ratio is just superb. I haven't seen any provider that's up to LeaseWeb's level for the same amount of money. The support is pretty good too, given that I don't even pay for it. They don't reply during weekends (unless you pay for that), but if you email them you will usually have a helpful response no later than the next day. I recently had problems with low speeds so I mailed them and a few hours later they had fixed what was wrong and asked me to confirm that the problem was sorted (which it wasn't, but another few hours later they had fixed it).

If you don't know Linux and think you'll be better off with Windows - think again. Windows servers cost a lot more since the operating system isn't free. Linux is also generally more secure than Windows and all (well, most) applications for Linux are free.
So what do you do if you're new to Linux? Well, first of all, select Debian as your OS. It has "apt-get" which makes installing applications almost too easy. Typing "apt-get mysql-server" will for instance install the latest version of MySQL (required for TorrentFlux/b4rt).

So, if you're interested in getting a seedbox, that's what I strongly recommend.

This thread (external) might be useful. It, of course, mentions LeaseWeb as the best. ;-).

that express server from leaseweb is an awsome price for performance... I'd get one if only it were us

I'm currently looking around for something near Texas that is cheaper than LT with simular proformance but I might have to go with them reguarldess

edit: just missed out on a pretty good deal from hivelocity... they ran out of 1.8ghz they were 1500gb with 512 ram, 80 drive for only 60 a month and windows web and 100mbit port were only 10$ each... so I'd be getting about the same thing that lt gives for about 20 less a month...

anyone know what the ftp rates would be from tampa flordia to dallas texas?

edit2: to answer my own question http://www.server4sale.com/ seems to be a good reseller of layered tech and softlayer

        Intel P4 2.8Ghz
        2GB RAM
        80GB Drive
        2000GB BW
from layered tech for only 85 a month and 0 setup, might be picking one up soon

I'm a noob, can anyone tell me how the whole seedbox thing actually works?

What I mean is: If you have a seeding server, do you just download/seed files onto the server (using some sort of remote link to control the Bittorrent client) then transfer the ones you want to use to a home PC via FTP or something? Or is it the other way around; download files to a home PC, then upload to the server for seeding? I'm not really interested in doing this, just curious how it works is all. :-)

    #784453 by unknown[77795] at 2007-02-24 08:22:58 (6 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

When you get a seedbox, you (to put it simple) just rent a computer that's connected to a high-speed internet connection. It is then up to you what you do with it. Normally though, you use a remotely controlled bittorrent client (for instance TorrentFlux or the slightly beefed-up version torrentflux-b4rt). Using this client, you download and seed torrents from your seedbox. When it is time to drag the file home, you can use either HTTP-transfer, FTP/SFTP (SFTP being an encrypted version of FTP) or SSH - or something else.

I have seen KeyWeb going down at 9mb/s and up 6mb/s. Getting speeds around 6mb/s when transfering from KeyWeb to my other .de box.

Just ordered the 39eu server from Hetzner, it'll only cost me $10 more than my DSL (I have two internet connections at home). 39eu = 60 CAD, my DSL is 31 CAD, and my buddy is gonna kick in a lil money for access, so I'll end up paying ~$40 a month for 100mbps. If all goes according to plan. Lol.

Just got the email saying my server is ready.

However the root password they supplied does not work. I've tried it many times. I can not SSH into the box with Putty. arrrgh soooo frustrating.

I got a seedbox there and i works fine for me!! And i'm not capped at 1 TB So I can use as much as I want

    EDIT :
The box is PRETTY FAST RIGHT NOW !!! ( I think of hardware right now , but speed is good aswell, 8 mb/s is pretty normal..) But I just created a 700 mb torrent in 9 seconds and rechecked it in about 2 seconds
