Update on the kimsufi C-250G, whilst you can obviously tell the processor is at the lower end of the market, It is still very good and is suitable for any torrent needs.

It creates a full dvd torrent file in pretty much the same time as the next processor size up and the only real difference is a little bit of unresponsiveness when downloading more than 3 torrents with lots of peers and ktorrent slows a bit (max delay I had was 3 secs).

Fully recommend!

I'm new to the idea of seedboxes and I'm going to run through the last month of this thread in a bit but I had a few questions if anyone is interested in weighing in their advice.

I guess I started thinking about getting a seedbox for two reasons. Mostly my internet service has bandwidth limits that cost a stupid amount of money. This makes it hard to seed sometimes and while I have a good 'buffer' ratio- I like to at least seed to 1 all the time.

So one reason is just having that extra bandwidth to upload.

Second reason, which follows from the first problem is again- bandwidth caps. I'd like to borrow some of my companies bandwidth. Specifically download. I figure I could probably hide from obvious detection if I were able to download directly from an FTP in small increments daily then to have a torrent open on the ports.

I considered trickling my downloads through torrents at work to pass under the radar but it still might look suspicious.

Just curious on some of your thoughts.

Also- how copyright friendly are seed box companies?

There are some dedicated servers at Leaseweb now starting up from 37 euro a month + vat  (cheaper if you pay once every 3 months or more), with 4 TB of bandwidth.

The processors are old (for example Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz or Athlon 64 3500+ (2.2 ghz i think)) but they're good enough for seeding because they have 2 GB of memory and  1 TB disk drive  (cheapest has 2 x 250 GB).

You can order them with Windows free (they have some promotion with Microsoft for "green" datacenters and windows is free with these servers)  so if you suck at Linux or don't want to screw with programs, you can just use remote desktop connection and uTorrent on them.

Sure it probably won't match with a OVH box but you can order them from anywhere and they have excellent peering with almost everyone, compared to OVH which works fine basically with just ovh boxes.

Wow, that's a deal for those who don't need that much BW and hate setup fee's.

I'm looking for something relatively cheap and not exactly looking for top of the line seedbox.

I don't exactly want to over seed around here.. this is more about practicality than epeen.

1)How do i use auto downloads with X-chat? also i tried RSS auto downloads but how can i reduce the checking time for new torrents. i want to keep it at 1 minute or so.

2)Also, is it OK if i am downloading/uploading some torrents off my home connection while at the same time, i am downloading/uploading off my seedbox as well? i mean, will i get banned on the tracker because of the different IPs during activity during the same time?

3)One more thing, can i upload the files that i have on my seedbox to other trackers as an uploader(make a new torrent)? How do i go about doing that?

thanks

Didn't see it mentioned in the last pages here but 100tb.com has some offers on WebhostingTalk where they sell dedicated servers with 100 TB of bandwidth for as low as 133$..

For example:

Pentium 4 D930, 2 GB of memory, 500 GB hdd, 1gbps port,  100 TB of bandwidth, inbound bandwidth not measured and unlimited,  133$ a month.

Xeon 3060 2GB RAM 1x500GB HDD, 100TB bandwidth, same stuff about incoming bandwidth free,   Price: $159

It's in US though but for private trackers it should be a great deal. Not to mention these can also be ordered with Windows 2003 standard for no extra cost, if you're too scared/not technical enough to install stuff on Linux.

"How would you like it if we could swap your D1000 to a Q2000?

We only have 25Amps per rack, and with us changing the hard disks over from 1TB to 2 x 500GB - it was going to go over our power limit - so instead of buying another 5Amps of power it's cheaper for us to sell Q2000's.

We renogiated our price per rack and managed to get a great discount as well as cutting our profit - this is why this we can give you this amazing discount.

This means everyone will save £60 on what the Q2000 used to cost!

What will you get for an extra £20? Look below.

-

Dual Core 2.4GHz (2 x 2.4GHz) - 4GB RAM - 1TB Hard Disk.
vs
Quad Core 2.8GHz (4 x 2.8GHz) - 8GB RAM - 2 x 1TB Hard Disks.

Recently purchased an account @ seedunlimited.com. Going to try it out for a month and see what a seedbox is all about. So far I am quite impressed. Amazing speeds, defiantly 10x better what I normally get, and even the speeds to download from the site is fast. The signup itself was very easy, and the UI is great. Also not a bad price per month.

That's a pretty dumb explanation ...

To keep it short  they have plenty of power for adding one drive - it's just 15 Watts or 0.065 amps (230v mains) - they just want to upgrade you to a server where they have more profit... but if you're happy why not

I grabbed one of the 100G accounts.  The speed started off good (around 6-9MB/s both directions) but it has completely dropped off.  It has only been around 1MB/s the entire day today.  Granted, this is better than my home connection's upload but still =/

Ok, so I'm getting interested in this seedbox thing due to the fact I need to shut down my computer for the night nowadays. I skimmed through most of the posts here but if someone could clarify things for me it would be greatly appreciated.

1. A seedbox is an offsite server that you download torrents to, right?

2. You use FTP to transfer the files from there to your own computer?

3. How hard is it to set up and use?

4. Can I download from many sites at the same time and then seed to them?

#1338229 by tokolDonor (Sarcastic Admin) at 2010-10-09 17:59:57 (2 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

1. Yes.
2. Yes, or any method you seem fit.
3. Not at all. Some places you get a pre-set setup and if you can use a torrent client at home, why couldn't you use it remotely?
4. Like you can at home.

Only difference with a 'seedbox' and 'home pc' is that the seedbox is usually dedicated for network transfering, not so much office work, gaming, surfing and that sort. Pretty much what you can do at home you can do on a remote 'server'.

#1338235 by mrunne (Power User) at 2010-10-09 18:09:33 (2 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Ok thanks for fast answers

Just to clarify some more you use a remote desktop of some sort to admin your seedbox?

Just an afterthought here, are seedboxes "safer" then just torrenting from home?

And finally could someone recommend an "easy to use" / "cheap" seedbox company? Keep in mind my traffic is on the lower end of the spectrum.

#1338239 by tokolDonor (Sarcastic Admin) at 2010-10-09 18:24:13 (2 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

On some setups, yes. On some you use webui, on some you use a shell over ssh...

safer? Well.. the p2p action does not happen at 'your' IP, but on an IP you've rented. Usually the host just take the box down, but depending how you pay your bills, they do have your address and such they can/will give out if required, depending on the country, ofc.
