Alibaba86 don't be surprised if they simply email you to say sorry you cannot rent one of the servers from ovh.com/fr as you are not a french resident, and you will be credited in full via the same method by which you paid. (i've seen this happen before)

I wonder why there are no cheap hosting providers in sweden anyway.
As my country decided to put up a 100% data retention over full 6 months, beginning this january, I'd be hosting there in no time.

there could be a lot of reasons why there is no decent providers in sweeden... could be too high corperate taxes... could be natural disasters... could be lack of infastructure (probably not the reason since there is 1gbit at home lol) could be lack of need... ie people hosting websites on their 1gigbit home connections etc

Ive just had a thought...

anyone know of any companies that post the hardrive to you at the end of each month for example then you have to post it back to start the server again?

Seems like it would be a great way to transfer large files off the drive if you were able to plug it into your PC direct...

Surely the companies that our letting you use these servers know that you are seeding lets just say "shadey" material.
Dont they say or do anything?!?

Seems like a massive risk to me I dont know if I would have the balls

Anyone care to shed some light for me?

As long as you don't attract any anti-pirates they won't give a damn.

ovh apparently does check the chepo boxes for warz... mostly because they use much more bw than normal uses and the bw isn't free to them but unmetered to you... but they cut you off and keep your money they don't call authorities

most of the time worst case scenario is they suspend service without refund

You would need a colocation server for that m8.. ie you own the hardware - ship it to their DC and pay for hosting space and bandwidth. That way you could request them send you drives whenever you want.

If you're in EU, get a root server at Hetzner. Fast connection, 1TB/month, support is relatively fast and you can install your own OS if you want (Slackware all the way! )

#899386 by unknown[120138] at 2008-02-13 02:14:07 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

actually it's 1TB at 100mbit then umetered at 10mbit... so you could do like 4TB in a month if you maxed it out round the clock

Just got a 100mbit shared unmetered connection server from ECATEL, best unheard of company ever

I get 11Mb/s from leaseweb .nl axx to my server!!! (both are .nl)

I`ve done a lot of chatting with ecates admin... I thought I`d share this email

Quote:

Hello,

The problem with providers like dedibox is, indeed u can push a lot of
bandwidth but not for a long time. They have periods when they think their
total bandwidth usage is to high and check for all the clients who use to
much for their thinking. And they cap or kick the clients out. This has
happened already for a lot of times which several unmetered providers like
dedibox, ovh, also dedimove and some German providers. I can insure u,
providers who deliver 100 mbit unmetered and (almost unshared) for a price
below 100-200 euro will stop sometime with delivering this service. Simply
because they lose money on such deals. Our profit on the 'shared' deals is
already very low. And we buy our bandwidth for the cheapest prices possible
from bandwidth suppliers.

The reason why we get so many clients is that we deliver a connection to the
client (unmetered) on the way it will always be stay. We don't shutdown
clients who use much or cap them. We just deliver them a shared port and if
we can optimize anything we just do this for the client. Our service stays
as it is and will be as it always was. We don’t change things and kick
clients out etc.

Best regards,
ECATEL (NETHERLANDS) LIMITED.

Sounds good,

I've emailed them and we'll see what happens.

What sort of deal did you get if I could ask please?

about ovh i havent read all the post but i thought i should tell yall. if you are from a country that hey dont rent to (like Sweden) and want to rent from OVH. you should signup through one of the non french sites (like www.ovh.de) and choose to pay by bank transfer. if you do that they dont check as long you have french fake name and adress

#904508 by unknown[58044] at 2008-02-22 19:34:43 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Yes, stay away from DediBox i hear only bad things about them lately, on the other hand Ecatel seems like a very good LeaseWeb alternative (if its cheap enough )

Reviews from customers : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=634147
                                          http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=649784
search for more. Some staff members from Ecatel members have posted there and you can get their MSN from their signature. They dont have web site atm but you can contact their NOC in case if emergency here http://noc.ecatel.net/?page=contact .
Speed test :http://files.ecatel.nl/speedtest/100mb.bin

I did 2 routing/speed test:

from Germany: 13-14ms ping , speed ~7MB/s.
from Texas, USA : ~125ms ping, 500KB/s. (= max US->EU transfer per connection for the server)
They said that they have a 100Gbit network but dont give their transit peers and exact numbers,  only "100Gbit Network (Tiscali /GBLX /Level3 /WVfiber)"

So i tested the peering with my Time Warner Telecom server in Texas which peers directly with almost any other major Tier1/Tier2 US/EU ISP. Here is the trace route:

Tracing route to www.ecatel.nl [89.248.160.2]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  65.59.246.1
  2     2 ms     2 ms     2 ms  66-194-173-245.static.twtelecom.net [66.194.1.245]
  3    28 ms    27 ms    33 ms  peer-02-so-0-0-0-0.chcg.twtelecom.net [66.192.4.20]
  4   123 ms   122 ms   123 ms  xe-0-0-0.ams10.ip.tiscali.net [89.149.186.233
  5   125 ms   125 ms   125 ms  ams.nl.ecatel.net [213.200.75.214]
  6   125 ms   124 ms   124 ms  89.248.160.2

Using Tiscali, target network entrance at hop 5, looks good.

Seems their trying to compete against LeaseWeb by providing the same or better service for less money. They say that they dont do contracts, payment is on monthly basis, and you can test the network for a few hours before you purchase your server, so you dont lose much if you try them out.

I think they are good, if they dont cap you (as they promise) .

Im currentlly setting up my own hosting company, The name is  Asta DataCentre it should be up and running soon.
im currently renting out seedboxses and dedicated servers also i can make installments for a price, I allow p2p (unlike most others) and theres no contract as such and lastly its pay for what you use (no  money in advance like leaseweb). All my servers are on 100MBIT connection with 24/7 support and affordable prices.

So if your in need of a seedbox or dedcated server then let me know or if you just need help setting yours up, Please let me know, Im more than happy to help:-)

Hope this was ok to post here. Please delete comment if not:-)

Relakks is really cheap und unlimited, but the service is quite unstable and the speeds to my country varied from 12kb/s to about 2mbit/sec.

@dano: give us some more infos. It's always good to know the people you are hosting with.
Where are the servers located? What exactly are "affordable prices"? Give an example plox.
