The first pic can be done multiple ways. They may have used a Hue/Saturation mask and then used a soft brush to paint on the mask so color would show through. The stuff on the left and back of his jersey looks like a brush, possibly with an overlay layer style. The one on his jersey has a gradient overlay layer style to give it the red color on the top and bottom.
The second pic is created all with brushes and possibly a few layer masks. Some are behind the foreground (he cropped messi) and some are in front.

If you really want to get into photoshop keep in mind you need to keep your brushes organized. I have downloaded over 150-200 brushes and yet I have all of them stored in 8-10 files (genres). Like Grunge, Backgrounds, Vector, Sparkles, etc.
You can use the brush preset manager to combine multiple downloaded brushes into a single file.

Hey Guys,
been without an avatar for a loooong time. Anyway i got 3 that i would like you guys to help me on
These first two are the right sizes i think. I just need text on them or any other things you guys deem appropriate and would make it look better. If you guys need originals just let me know.

chakynet - I used the font you gave me but it is just symbols....I hope thats what you wanted. And because the symbols are so wide I had to put the text vertically as well, otherwise the font size would be very small horizontally.

To Everyone else still waiting... - Got called into work while working on yours Mast3rz and before I could get to the rest. I gotta get up in 6 hours so I gotta head to bed, working all day tomorrow too

@KW33D, oops, I didn't know those fonts are symbols. The image is fine, but can you try this font
