I really don't see any reason to start another new IRC network.
Instead you could keep your userbase on FreeQuest and if you want your own server you could file a request for linking to FreeQuest.
Support freequest

the problem being that freequest is netsplit paradise, if you know what i mean
our own IRCD would rawk!
So what's better not reaching a channel entirely, because the only single IRC Server of that network is down or dealing with netsplits, which are in no way a problem for the channels security

hell yeah...
it's a very good thing but I have no idea how much money it will cost. Or how memory of the server it will use.
If it don't use the server and money is not a problem HELL YEAH!!!

I would have thought there were other more important things to work rather than hosting an irc channel

My vote : Hell yes
However, I know running IRC is no menial task, though it does not consume all that mutch bandwidth it does take up precuis processing power and time, and freequest, like alot of people say, is afterall a well managed server, even with all the netsplits. I say, yes, sure, an IRC server whould be great, but it should not be priority #1

I think it's a foolish waste of bandwidth, cpu cycles and time. Freequest is fine, netsplits will always occur on any network you use thats has more then one server.
More importantly, If the tb-servers lose connnectivity, no one would be able to discuss what the problem was because the irc server would be gone as well.

Better you try to rise the user limit
