I've been waiting pretty much since July for the Jasper chipsets to hit retail, but it's now mid November and I've yet to see any conclusive evidence of them in the wild. Does anyone know what's happening with them? I'm in no hurry to get one, but the delay makes me think that perhaps Microsoft has been having technical issues with them.

Oh...and has anyone tried flashing using the ICH9 southbridge?

Flashed my hitachi 78 with my ich9r.

I'll give it a go then

Any news on the banhammer? Is it safe to update to the new dash?

#1041699 by WandelDonor (Pirate) at 2008-11-19 20:29:11 (4 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I've seen a couple people claiming it works, haven't dared to try it myself though  :-P
I would also like to know if it's safe  :-)

one of my friends who did not get banned (out of 6 ppl) has updated to the latest dash with no problems as yet.

he has not played any review copies or cod5 or gow2 or any of the apparently suspect games and he is fine.

for now ? hehe

edit: btw this is a real life friend, not some guy from the internet and I know that he is not talking crap

Yeah its fine to update. Im not banned and played gow2 early. By not updating you may as well be banned, just update and enjoy...

MS won't ban people immediately. If they've implemented some new form of detection methods, they won't use them to ban people for a while.

The question on everyones mind was IF this NXE update would ban people "on the fly".

They could just as easily have done it that way since we've never seen anything like this update before.

But as you say they might have flagged every flashed xbox during the update and then when the next banhammer falls we're all doomed

Yeah but they haven't.

<+c4eva> all good and safe, disc checks optimised but same type!

Just a quick n00b question since I've just flashed....

How much "safer" would it be to create an offline profile for stealth games and use my online profile for "normale" games?

I know that achievements will be lost but better safe than sorry right?

Will anything be uploaded anywhere even though I'm using an offline profile?

I might as well use my online profile if there's no difference

@ Nexer : When you put in the game the xbox 360 saves the main info (stealth - dmi, pfi, ss, crc etc) is saved in the NAND built into the console. When it updates to live this info is sent to MS and if there is a bad rip then you may be flagged. Therefore it doesn't matter if you use a "offline profile" as the info will still get sent to MS when you log into live. Of course non of this is 100% certain but educated guesses.

So what you're saying is that when I log onto Live with my regular profile it will update what's been played on my offline profile.

Bugger

So I guess it doesn't matter then

Oh, and what's NAND?

NAND is the flash memory in the console.

What you have to learn is that there isnt a perfect way to not get banned. All you can do is lower the risk by making sure your games are fully stealthed, you have latest firmware, don't play review copies and games before release. Yet you could do all these things and get banned OR ignore them and be lucky and still unbanned.

I'm pretty sure he meant EEPROM when he said NAND - Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory. A NAND is just a 2-input logic circuit where it returns 'true' in all cases except the one where both inputs were true.

Although, to clarify, an EEPROM is likely to contain NAND gates

Oh god, community games...

That and my latest change of status to 'full time bumeerrrr student' and the 12 month XNA creators club membership that comes with it means I'm not likely to be doing much work for the next, errr, 12 months...

Time to write crappy games and sell them to people - yay!

Nah I meant NAND, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAND_flash#NAND_flash

It's still erasable electronically, programmable and non-volatile (thus ROM)

But yeah, I'll give you that one given that it's different enough from EEPROMs (in that you can edit single chunks of data rather than having to rewrite the whole thing).

Jasper motherboards have now been spotted! They come with 256MB internal memory storage!

PSU is now 150w

Models spotted are Arcade with manufacturing date 10-23-2008 Lot #0843X by FDOU

god I hope this pretty much solves the rrod failures, the only damn gripe I have with the 360 is the flakyness of the hardware.

good news about the internal memory

Yeah....it's had its share of hardware problems.

Since two production lines aren't cheap we're probably gonna be seeing Jasper Premiums and Elites with internal memory too

Same cooling solution as the falcons - guess they reckon they've cracked that one then

More than happy with my 12 month old elite. The new ones might have a 65nM GPU but they'll also have lite-ons

I've been quite intimate with my falcon at times though and I really can't imagine it RRoDing. I've abused the fuck out of it and it's stuck in a relatively enclosed shelf with poor circulation so how other people have managed to RRoD it is beyond me.

#1046677 by unknown[9089] at 2008-11-28 15:25:03 (4 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

its beyond you that there have been blatent as day cooling problems amongst other things since day 1 that microsoft themselves have attempted to remedy ?

I had my first 360 for about 18 months before it died, and I also wondered how the hell so many people were getting rrod when I was perfectly fine.

then the inevitable RROD reared its ugly little head lol

Its harder to find people who have not had the rrod then otherwise hehe

I am at the point now where I blast my 360 with a 10inch desk fan in some attempt to make it last longer

I found the original xbox to be rock solid, it gets left on almost 24/7 with me and it just does nto burp fart or anything, borderline perfection.

Now when I feel as comfortable with the 360 as I do with the old xbox then I will be a happy man, until then there is always and I mean every single time I turn my 360 on there is the stare at the lights on the front preying silently to myself that they turn green lol

I read a long long time ago now that the beginning of most 360 rrod problems was the chips they used (not sure what ones exactly) had a poor thermal design or something, microsoft had decided to remove a third party from the process that ensures the thermal properties of the chips or something like that, I have tried to find this article since then but to no avail, it was interesting reading for sure.

So basically microsoft cut corners with certain chips and the result was that they produced more heat then eventually the rrod.

I just hope they eventually (hopefully now) have sorted the problems, but of course only time will tell.

Also there are many many false reports made regarding the numbers of RROD failures, there are entire groups of nintendo and ps3 fanbitches that spend most of there time posting that they have rrod all over the place.

but the numbers are still high tho hehe I will be buying a jasper 360, touch wood it will last me like the old original xbox has

The current cooling solution might just be temporary on the Jasper as it would make sense to keep using the cooler until stock runs out.

Same thing with the memory modules which now again occupies both sides of the PCB.
