even with silver you can get the update on live... I did, just update the console, then go to play a video and it will get you to download the update for the codec.

Ya but I can't get on Silver either (console = banned)
These updates seem like total crap to me.
On the previous update they would bring us H264 support, but after I updated and tried to play a file, I needed another update.
As with this new update, the exact same happens for DivX/XviD.
In other words, only people with access to Live! can get support for H264/DivX/XviD.
Ofcourse I'm being punished, I'm banned after all   But they should just include the codecs into the updates.

ohh, I must have missed the part where you said you were banned.  My mistake.

Guess I'll just have to take my HDD to someone with Live-access and then let it apply the update.

Well that console is already updated

But removal of HDD would mean that the update is not there, at least the codec is on the HDD.

Well im not sure but i think all those info is stored in the NAND on the motherboard. Anyways the iso from megafileupload worked fine.

#865829 by unknown[9751] at 2007-12-10 22:50:51 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Yes it does work fine
All new features work.
But it still asks me to download the codec from live when I'm trying to play xvid/divx.

Do my xbox need any modifications to play "pirate games" ?

I have just sat down to have a go of mass effect and after almost 2 years my xbox just gave me the dreaded ring of death

Always felt I was one of the lucky ones as I never ever had an issue with my 360 up untill now.

So my 360 is almost 2 years old and its been modded, what are my options currently ?

At this time of year the last thing I can do is buy a new one and I dont think I can live without my 360

edit: another question

If I do go and buy a new 360, proberbly be the elite one is it possible to put my old drive from my borked xbox into the elite so I didnt have to flash it ?

Flash back to normal and lie to the people on the phone about why you opened up your console.  As long as there isn't any visual modification they'll fix it.  Microsoft knows they screwed up with the design so I think they'll fix any 360 that comes in.

Just fix it yourself.  Mine was a launch system and it died like 3 months ago.  I was really hesitant to do it myself, but I finally gave it a shot.  It really isnt as hard as it sounds.  If you can build a computer, you can easily fix for sure.  You need like $10 worth of screws and washers from the hardware store, and some arctic silver 5 and thats it.  No drilling or nothing.  If you want to do it, let me know and ill give you all the info that I used.  btw, I was a complete noob when I did it...never opened my xbox before or anything.  Opening it is probably the hardest part.

#866346 by unknown[9089] at 2007-12-11 19:31:39 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I am certainly interested in fixing it myself.

I have been making computers for a while now and have moderate experience modding consoles etc etc

I should be able to do it

Please post the info you think I may need, cheers

Will try your suggestion as a last resort mcatrage

edit: got my xbox apart, as I was gently prying the last of the clamps of the heatsinks I scatched the mainboard, the scratch is absolutely tiny but breaks 2 tiny lines on the board

so now I have proberbly fucked myself over hehe

anyhoo, the cpu and gpu have thermal paste basicaly like a pizza across the entire surface of the chips, its even flowed over the side of the cpu.

all the tiny tiny little chips/resistors or whateaver they are are all pretty much latherd with thermal paste.

the thermal paste shoudl not be in contact with anything other than the shiney surface squares on the gpu and cpu right ?

I suspect tho that even if I clean the thermal paste off entirely and replace with new and put back together I may still not get any luck becaus eof the tiny nano scratch

brand new ps3 (pretty much) boxed with resistance and the bluetooth remote in exchange for an xbox elite

any offers

I have always said the ps3 owns the 360 anyway hehe

Why didn't you just listen to me?

Sounds like you have an expensive paper weight now.

#866450 by unknown[9089] at 2007-12-11 23:06:35 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I am almost 100% certain its a paper weight now hehe

When I looked at my case I realised that when I opened it the first time to mod it I didnt give a rats ass about scratching it and was a little heavy handed, it was obvious the xbox was tamperd with and there is a chance they would refuse to fix it when they have it because its been tamperd with and I would have then had to pay to get my xbox shipped back to me, afaik.

my sticker was all fucked too so I couldnt make it look like its just been damaged a bit when I have changed a faceplate or something.

I was extremely carefull when I was prying the x clamps off but one nano slip and its fucked lol

No way in hell it will work now without a brand new mainboard I think.

I am sure tho that if I had not done my nano slip it would have been fixed easily as hell, just been reading a guide and its basicaly a cleanup job with soem form of alcohol and cotton buds then apply some good quality thermal paste, add a few washers blah blah blah and its sorted, thsi method seams to have a very good success rate and apparently has stood the test of time.

my top tip for the day ?

Be carefull if your trying the x clamp fix hehe it only takes a tiny slip

#866518 by tijafasn (Power User) at 2007-12-12 02:14:26 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Yeah, the x clamps are made to not come off so they are a bitch.  Im pretty sure all of the chips are covered in paste.  Mine was.  Its some nasty paste too.  Alcohol wont work though.  you will have to go and buy 100% acetone to get that shit off.  You just scrape as much as you can with a putty knife or something, and rub the shit out of it with acetone afterwards.  It took me like an hour to get mine clean.

And on a side note, if it IS actually broken for good, at least now you will have another key available if you ever get banned from live and need to do the new unban hack.

A light at the end of the tunnel hehe

now that would be usefull

I know I gotta load of spare parts now too, proberbly never need them but handy anyway, can understand why people who have not had there 360`s for long get pissed of with the rrod.

I proberbly needed a break anyway hehe

I will try and get a high rez photo of the small scratches I made in the board to see what you guys think, most certainly a problem that cant be fixed imo but u never know hehe I have once in my entire life been wrong apparently

It was never proven tho

edit: just thaught.

so basicaly because I have never been online at all since I hacked my 360 the key cannot possibly be banned and microsoft have no way at all to tell that I was using a hacked xbox to play games, yay hehehe

now that is very very handy hehe When I get my new one be it an elite or just a bog standard core I will put the latest iextreme on even though I am sure some of my earlier game burns wont work but thats not the end of the world realy as they are only a handfull of early releases.

Didnt look very hard for an answer but I am sure that I can actualy just stick my old drive in a new machine so I might just flash that one with the latest firmware ready for the new machine an djust swap drives and keep the new one as new.

#866528 by tijafasn (Power User) at 2007-12-12 03:22:42 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I dont think thats possible.  Each drive is specific to each xbox as far as i know.

#866538 by mcatrage (Power User) at 2007-12-12 04:39:12 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

You can stick old drives in new machines but you'll have to spoof it to be like the one you are replacing.

#868250 by WaylanderDonor (Power User) at 2007-12-15 09:49:57 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

I'm probably going to buy an elite, since they are the only ones with 65nm cpu:s I can find, and I was wondering if it is just as flashable as say a premium?

#868264 by unknown[24504] at 2007-12-15 10:21:00 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Yes, if you don't get a hitachi 79, then its a little harder

#868265 by WaylanderDonor (Power User) at 2007-12-15 10:25:01 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

What about the BenQ drives? I read somewhere that there was no real firmware for it or something.

#868270 by unknown[24504] at 2007-12-15 10:36:54 (5 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

C4E has made a firmware for the BenQ.

Nice, thanks for the info.

Btw, what is the best site with information about xbox 360 modding around?
