Na, but you can switch your Real ID to something false I reckon.

That is, if you created the account with a fake name from the start. Otherwise you can't.

You sure you can't switch? I remember it being an option back before battlenet atleast.

You have never been able to change your name on your account for World of Warcraft due to security measures.

i just typed in my initials not knowing any better and figuring it would never be used and i would just save time.

worked out awesome with all this real id integration shit, not that i really care if people know my name to begin with i guess.

Well, you never know what kind of sick people are online. Imagine you grief this ganker, and suddenly he decides to order you pizza or something by information that's easy to get with having your name.

A guy posted his name in the EU thread about this, and by two threads time his family and adress was listed already.

I'm not going to be posting ANYTHING as my name is very Norwegian, and it's also very unique.

People can't do anything with just a name, unless it's just yours, unique. Because normal names are used by millions of people all over the world. I can bet you that if i told you my name, noone would be able to find me even then. Without having any city or whatever they'd have no way to narrow it down to me.

Thats you then, my name is unique in the way no one else has it.

Yea, and that sucks. But people with rare names are obviously a minority, so i'd find it hard that Blizzard would even care. But still makes me wonder why they even feel the need to show your real name on the forums though. <.<

what a shitstorm on those forums... over 1100 pages of complaints in 24h

if this change goes through, they are gonna lose a LOT of money.

Yea, i bet Blizzard is gonna either A) stop it completely or B) Make it optional. Because seriously, if it's 1100 pages of complaints it maeans a lot of customers going away, and they really don't want that, i hope atleast.

Been watching the beta for a while. looks promising. I really like the new engine and graphics. Looks heaps better. My only concern is that I have to buy a new computer though since I don't know if my laptop can take it =/

Also, fuck me i'm glad they scrapped the realid name thing for the forums. Who the fuck thought that would be a good idea?

#1306924 by unknown[1431] at 2010-07-11 16:41:51 (3 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Most of the people that whine about RealID don't even know how it works. The forum usage of RealID as proposed earlier was cancelled, but still, if you didn't want someone to know your name:

1. Don't post on the forums.
2. Don't add people using RealID.

Gankers still only know your characters name, there's no secret button that tells you anyone's RealID. You can still add people as friends by their character name. If someone wants to add you, you can choose to accept or decline. Even if someone found a name through someone elses RealID friends, there's no connection to a character until it's been added.

And if you're convinced that RealID is the spawn of satan, you can always turn it off by enabling parental controls on your account, and disable it in the settings.

I couldn't care less about the realid, but to have your real name written out when you write something on a forum is retarded. I have a unique name and I'm the only one in the world with it. I also had a public job before and I don't want people to relate me with a online game.

My name is mine and mine only.

Your name isn't your, your name is the government of the country you live in. I doubt anyone have these uber rare names that noone else has, and tbh, as long as you only give oyu your first and last name and nothing else, it's gonna take a lot of work for thme, they have to first narrow down the country, then the age, and then the job etc etc.
But still, shitty move that i'm glad wasn't implemented. Get rid of Kotick is the next thing then!

#1307391 by Chill (Power User) at 2010-07-12 14:35:42 (3 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

What? My name isn't my government's. It's ones identity and what you present yourself with and live with.  First of, I'm not even in my country. Then yeah, I do have an uber rare name that can easily be tracked via facebook since I'm the only one on it. Also googleing my name brings up my family, and why the fuck should they be targeted eventually because of some fucked up WoW reason.

it's like growing fucking weed. Never ever tell anyone, never ever show someone. stealth > all!

#1307392 by Snuffsis (Power User) at 2010-07-12 14:39:25 (3 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Your name is your identity sure, but it isn't who you are, it's jsut a fucked up line of words on papers that your government DEMANDS so they can keep tabs on you, so yes, your name is your government in todays society, just like how the government pretty much owns your ass.

But whatevs, just dont tell them where you live and shit like that, if they only have your name it'd be near impossible to find anyone.
The reason they found that GM is simple, they knew his name and where he worked, easy to draw the line there.

#1307397 by Chill (Power User) at 2010-07-12 14:50:52 (3 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

Of course it's who you are. A way to distinguish one from another.I feel bad for you seeing your name as a way for the government to keep track on you..

It's not only what people can find out about you. It's also a very delicate subject. In a world where MMO's is almost constantly at the news on how bad they inflict the children and how people see it as a drug or a addiction, I wouldn't want a employer to judge me because of that. No I don't flame (anymore) but I certainly wouldn't want that to come out as me. As things I said in the past certainly doesn't reflect my personality or how I speak too people nowdays.

Which is why what you said in the past would remain under your characters name, if it would go through that is.

You may think your name is who you are and that's fine, but i believe i am who i am, my name "officially" might be what my parents gave me, but it's really not who i am and it's really not what people call me everyday. It's just something i use to sign papers with, nothing more.

I'm not just talking about me though. I'm talking about people in general, well that and the actual idea aswell See even if people are angry 18 year olds now, they will grow up, and if you where an employer for a say public speaking job would you hire a guy that went totally crazy towards other people on a forum?

I'd say fuck his past and look at him now?

I resent any employer for looking at your facebook and who you know, and googling your name to find out what you've done etc etc. They should look at your resume and speak to your references and learn to know you from an interview.

So yea, if i were an employer i'd ignore his past and see in his resume if he's capable or not.

Numerous people where found in threads on 4chan knowing ONLY their name. I saw three people get all their personal information (where they live, family, etc etc) pulled out on the european forum.

Don't be naive. With an unique name it's possible to find ANYBODY. Sadly - I have an unique name and ONE google search brings up my name because it's an unique combination of names.

#1307464 by Snuffsis (Power User) at 2010-07-12 18:14:00 (3 years ago) - [Quote] - [Report]Top

You're comparing 4chan, which is full of hackers and insane people to world of warcraft forums which are full of 12 year olds who can't even turn on a PC?

Anyway, i just think people are way to paranoid thinking they'll get hunted down, sure that happens, but it won't unless you don't troll someone so he gets pissed off.
If you kill him in-game he can't see your name either, so that's not valid either.
