I might just agree. Given the latest developments... an invite only email system with a huge amount of space that seems too good to be true, meant to bring in the people by the hoards. A satellite system "available for everyone" that potentially has many a naughty use and now this, an IM system. A bit smelly, no?
I don't want to sound like my aim is to spread paranoya, but consider this:
Information is power, what would you do, if you wanted to gain an upper hand on everything an every one. Get insider trading information perhaps? You would offer an information service, establish a trusty base and begin abusing it. By now, google is widely known for their ideals of IT development and ease of use together with strict privacy policies and rules about advertising. If they abuse it or not, I guess only they know...
A conspiracy-theorist view upon their email service:
You want to gain useful information, right, so you need many people, especially important people, who are connected to different business-politics organizations or what not. The invites. Your average internet granny cannot sign up and send emails about cake recipies. Instead you get a group, expodentially expanding, of "smart people". How to attract those people: the huge space given. And that space has one more advantage. They do not have to keep track of emails, that they wish to "overview". Spam gets deleted by the users anyway and who would delete an important message when you have 1gb storage space available?
We can all agree, that google is the most influential and most used website on the internet. Even a shallow look onto search histories could make you a millionaire if you know how to use it right.
Anyway, on a more casual note, i voted "IM is one step too far" on the poll. Google OS sounds weird to me. It is worth considering how Your google mail address, searches and from now on, instant messages could actually be (ab)used.

IAC, I just use google for their search capabilities.. gmail is ok.. I only dl to my pop-client, so the whole storage thing.. well it's not really that exciting.
That they are now trying to get in on the IM market is quite amusing, though I do admire their (sudden) open standard policy (i.e. use of XMPP and thus Jabber compatibility/network promotion).
If other major IM providers (i.e. icq,ms,aol, etc) decided to change their protocols then google may have a future in developing a client that actually delivers more than other competitors.
In the mean time it's always fun to look at their thingies..
* The problem with Google is that they have oodles and oodles of O's *
