on all 45nm 1.4 is the maximum (e7xxx, e9xxx, e5xxx)
on 65nm its 1.5 (e6xxx, e4xxx, e2xxx)

but to be extra safe, dont go over 1.35, its pretty good overclock at 1.35 too

Alright, I have:

Athlon X2 4200+ processor
Corsair XMS2 PC6400 C5 RAM
and Asus M2N-E Motherboard

I realize the hardware is older, but I don't have a choice right now, I have to keep it (In University.)

I read a couple articles on overclocking the 4200 (stock 2.2ghz, and 1.35 volts), they pushed it up to 2.7ghz without even touching the voltage, and it was stable.
I for a while (few months) had mine clocked at 2.3ghz, and it seemed randomly I would crash. I had it at this clock for so long I never connected the two.
Well I pushed it up to 2.5ghz (stock 1.35 volts) the other day, and it booted up fine. I fired up a game and started playing. About 20 minutes later I crashed, Event ID 41. I looked this up and it appears to be a problem with my RAM.

Since then I reset ever thing back to default/stock, and there has not been 1 crash since (a little more than a week.)

In the bios the voltage of the RAM is 1.9 which I set it to, but the clock frequency is set to auto. Is there any tweaks you guys can recommend so I can push my processor? When I had it set to 2.5ghz it made a significant difference in game, and I'd really like to get it up there!

what cooling do you have for your CPU?
that is a fairly major part in this, Manson

do you think it could be getting to hot?
I just have the stock heatsink fan, with that air duct cooling system installed that came with the Antec sonata II cases.
at stock settings right now, it is idle at 39*c, under load I think, if I remember correctly it's around 47.
