that is a "kingstone value ddr2 667" ram, the computer see it as samsung, which is not bad actually,

using only +0.1v
tried 1066, didnt work, no matter what timing i use
tried 1000, worked (booted into windows) but orthos stoped after less than 1 minute , regardless to the timings
tried 900, ....as u see above

now i remmber that increasing timing would not affect performance much
atleast not like how the ram frequancy would affect it

is there anykind of artical comparing the both (ram frquancy VS timing)

Remember the tjunc for those processors is 85C.
CoreTemp is showing 15C too high.

So I'm pretty confused with my memory timings/ratio and stuff. I think I've narrowed them down to these 2 settings but I'm not sure what the differences or benefits are... The box I got my memory in says it's rated at 800mhz, 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2v. I put the voltage to 2.2v and as you can see on the images below I changed the timings as well

heres 2.4 SPD @ 800mhz:

and 2 SPD @ 667mhz:

I would have thought the first one is better as the memory is running at 800mhz and the frequency is higher? Then again I've tried to do some research about it and I've read/heard that 1:1 ratio is what to aim for... Anyway I'm confused so any help would be nice, does it even matter?

Hello.

Ok iv read every post in this topic regarding how to overclock my system but failed to find the how to or even a programe that does it...

I have a:
AMD Athlon 64x2 5000+ 2.61GHz, 2GB RAM

How can i overclock it? This may be a stupid question but i dont realy care how stupid it is cos i just wanna know :-p

Thanks in advance

@Jamjamm
running the ram @800, is indeed faster than running at @667
i too heared about the 1:1 thingy, but i notice that running my ram 5:6 is faster than 1:1 (faster in boot times, or game loading, maybe i am just imaging)

cpu running too hot? its pissing me off... the thermalright doesn't fit good on the evga 680i.. i'm thinking of slapping a water cooler on this

since the cooler is so heavy it was coming off the cpu so I had to do a little mod.. now the bastard doesn't bend down

If your true is "coming off" the CPU then you did it wrong.

google EVGA 680i and true and you will see... thermalright says they are not supposed to fit at all but some people found a way

pcgamer: you tried mounting it outside of the case, right? applying pressure on both sides of the board until you hear the HS snap into place.

Guess some people are 'tards then, because I put a TRUE on a 680i a while ago and it didn't require any extra effort.

680i is probably one of the most purchased boards in recent months, only makes sense more people would have trouble.

More people buying it = More retards buying it (proportional) + the "680i is for retards" factor = More people say "TRUE doesn't fit!"

These are the same morons calling DOA on mobos when they're using bad memory, bad CPU installation, bad PSU, etc.  When an idiot builds his computer, he sees his video card is an Nvidia, and then finds an Nvidia board (with SLi, woohoo!) and then they're idiot brain pieces together than an Nvidia card on Nvidia chipset will perform better!  Then this same idiot tries to put a TRUE on there.

btw I'm not calling you an idiot, anyone can mess up a HSF installation, but don't call bs on the board because so many retards are buying it and can't figure out how to install properly.

Question: Can Thermalright Ultra-120 fit on an EVGA 680i motherboard?

Answer: The Ultra-120 together with its backplate can be installed on motherboard such as the ASUS Striker Extreme (680i) Edition without a problem but for other EVGA motherboards, Ultra-120 will not be able to be installed due to the micro SMD on the backside of the board and underneath the CPU socket. The backplate for the Ultra-120, if installed, will be pressed against those micro SMD, risking damage and/or causing a short circuit. We will be developing a solution soon to solve that problem.

There are more than one 680i chipset motherboards...

The heatsink cannot be mounted vertically because of the northbridge cooler and when mounted horizontally the weight shift causes it to lose contact.

They must have released a new backplate because even Anadtech's review used the eVGA 680i:
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2981&p=3

They have pics of the kit (w/ backplate shown) on earlier pages.
And yes the board I put the TRUE on was an eVGA 680i.  I know they have a few different revisions (two? three?) so maybe they fixed the problem.

And no, "weight shift" should not cause a loss of contact.
That's the point of the screws.  If tilting the board causes your HSF to move at all or effects your temps at all then the HSF is not installed properly.

I could hold my mobos upside down and the TRUE won't move.
If you have an older backplate (if those even exist) then just order a new backplate for $2 and install the TRUE properly.  WC'ing isn't worth it anymore, the results are barely better than the TRUE anyway.  Besides, all the C2D's are voltage limited not temp limited which means WC won't help you at all.  Except make that number in CoreTemp lower... Big deal.

I'm gonna remount it as soon as I get some mx2 and will post results..

edit: I actually grabbed the CPU+HS mounted already from some dude and that noob had crappy ceramic paste all over the freaking cpu/socket ... cleaned it up with rubbing alcohol and put some AS5 on it and mounted the HS vertically ... now the temps are 10-15 degrees lower on both idle and load

I was just too lazy to take off and check before building the pc before .. my mistake... thanks xoinic owe you one!

Guys, just some quick advice.

I'm familiar with building PC's, but today was the first time I tried my hand at overclocking. I had a quick flick through this thread, and did some googling and I think it all went ok.

I've got an E2160, Gigabyte GGA-P31-DS3L and 2x2GB of DDR800.

I've currently got the chip running at 3.00GHz with 9x333 on the FSB. It idles at about 20-25°C, and rolls up to about 53°C when I run a full load test with Prime95 or Orthos. Temperatures are when the rig is outside of a case though.

The voltage control is set to AUTO, but currently all the voltages are at stock, and I haven't tweaked them past their default.

Are those acceptable temps? anyway to lower them without dropping the overall speed?

Shadowise: Those temps are fine, once in the case you should expect it to go higher (around 10c or so I guess) but yeah, they are fine. If you want to lower them you can buy a new heatsink/fan, and while inside the case you could fit 2 fans, one to go at the front of the case to bring cool air in, and one at the back of the case to take the hot air out.

#954948 by Xi0nicDonor (Power User) at 2008-06-09 23:58:27 (5 years ago) - [Report]Top

Those temps mean nothing, use CoreTemp and let us know what it shows (Idle and 30 minutes load).
Also switch the CoreTemp display to "Distance to Tjunction" and let us know those values, too (Idle and 30 minutes load).  Try to keep the distance to tj above 30C.

Usually the generic "CPU Temp" sensors are off by 15C.  I know they're a waste of time because I've seen many (including mine) "CPU Temp" values shown below ambient.  For example my room might be 25C ambient and the "CPU Temp" will be reporting 22C or 23C values, which is just impossible.

If you're running "AUTO" vcore then no doubt your board is pushing the processor way too high.  Check in CPUZ and let us know what your vcore is showing there (Idle and load).

A temp doubling from idle to load (25C to 53C in your case) isn't normal, by the way.

Those ARE the temps I was getting from CoreTemp, Speedfan also reported the same temperatures.

CPUZ was reporting the VCore as somewhere around 1.39. Is that too high? Should I set it to manual and try keeping it at 1.325?

What motherboard do you have ?
Thats the absolute first time I've seen a vIncrease instead of a vDroop My guess it's some sort of power saving or the board automatically increasing vCore. Set it manually in BIOS to be sure, and turn of all the extra crap power savings. You do not want to use those when you overclock

Hi and best wishes to all. It's nice see many HW enthusiasts in a torrent site. I joined TB just yesterday. Here goes my first post.

Voltage is really high, as i am trying to push this little guy as high as possible (just for benching ). And it's still going up. Had a glimpse of 3.8 till now....

@Shadowise:
You have got a nice chip there mate. Eventhough VID is 1.325v, it just needs 1.39v to be stable as per the pics you posted. I have seen many e2160s needing atleast above 1.4v to be stable at 3gigs. And also your temperatures are fine.

However turn of Speedstep and C1E in BIOS to get the actual Idle temperature of CPU. Intel Speedstep underclocks the processor whenever there's no load on the CPU( you can see that Coretemp shows 3GHz and CPU-Z shows the actual stepped down speed, ie., 2GHz). It is a power saving feature too, however the difference in power consumed is quite negligible. So you better turn them off, atleast to get the current temperatures.

Somethings you can do to improve cooling:
1. Disable auto fan speeds. So that they will run at their highest speeds.
2. Apply any quality TIM(thermal interface material) like Arctic MX-2 or Arctic silver 5. They are really cheap and are a worthy purchase. If you are currently using the stock thermal pads which came with the stock heatsink, then these thermal compounds are ought to give better temperatures of atleast 5C or even more.
3. Fans with more airflow a.k.a CFM. Replace current fans with higher airflow if possible (Though it generally gives worthy results with aftermarket coolers like TRUE 120)

Regards.....
