Hey.. just updated to bios version 507 on my P5B Deluxe wifiap, seems to work nicely. However. I tried increasing FSB to 338, while lowering the multiplier to 6, which means processor was underclocked. I also ran memory at 667. The computer started acting weird.. :p. It would boot alright the first time, then when I tried to reboot with the "restart" software thing.. you know what i mean. Then the computer seemed to boot, but i got no picture. if i shut it down and manually restarted it it would start just fine, however, i had no keyboard anymore. as soon as i decreased FSB again keyboard started working.

this is weird because both memory and CPU was underclocked. PCI-E and PCI was locked to 100 and 33.33 respectively. Any ideas?

cyber u may want to try the following things regarding the weird restart issue:
-- try raising FSB voltage
-- try raising vdimm voltage at high FSB, though memory is running @ stock or lower, this will help maintain stability, same with CPU, just a little bit though, 0.1 or less, not more.

@Yinchie
actually this will void ur warranty, but it is worth a shot if u are not worrying about that.

Can any one lead me to a site that can teach me basic overclocking and preferably someware that will explain to me what I am atchualy doing.

I could just start overclocking with any 1 of a million guides but I like to know what I am doing before I do somthing.

I know a lot of the basics like voltages, frequencys ect as I have been messing around with PC's for years and am in the electronic components bussiness (Transistors, resistors, IC's ect) but when it comes to things like timings, FSB, CASS, Latency, multipliers ect I don't have a clue. And messing around with the bios scares me when I don't understand it.

I am also getting tired of asking "What RAM should I buy?" type questions in the forum every time I need a new part.

   Thanks in advance

Thanks demagh I just had a quick look and it looks like a good starting point. I want to go in to a bit more depth but I will work my way through your guide and google some of the things I want to learn more about.

   Thanks for your quick reply

Do you guys think it is possible to overclock a Ati 9600 256mb? where can i find information on this? Thanks.

and i purchased a 256 mb video card, why does it say i have 511mb in total? can i edit it and lower the shared memory and raise the dedicated memory? (i think its the other way around )
heres some info on it.

Thanks.

AtiTool and Atitray both dont work on vista, something about the kernal debugger cant load driver :S can u plz find a overclocker on vista?

Try rivatuner

/Eezee

PS. why do you want to oc the gfx card anyway if you're running under vista, like there would be any games to play

ok formatted to XP, now i installed AtiTool and overclocked it From Core=398.00, MEM=200 TO Core=470, MEM=202. i tested it and it was acctually going up to 495, but went down to 470 and stayed fine(no errors). so will this show a diffrence in games, etc? thanks

@david101

try fraps to judge ur gaming performance after and before overclocking

The voltage of my processor fluctuates a lot, is that normal or is it dangerous?? Ranging from 1.424 ~1.488 v
here is a video to show what I mean: http://serv1.gameage.nl/pcgamer/voltage.html

You have to look closely at the voltage that CPU-Z is showing it is 1.4xx (xx = the numbers fluctuating)

check my profile for specs. basicly its an X2 3800+ overclocked to 2.4 GHz

have you deactivated cool&quiet option in the bios?

#686069 by pcgamerDonor (User) at 2006-09-11 16:10:38 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

I just checked BIOS and the only option that kinda relates to cool n' quiet is "Smart CPU fan Control" which is disabled

#686084 by unknown[104101] at 2006-09-11 16:46:20 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

hmmm perhaps its just a hardware thing, the PSU that doesnt send stable power, or same but the motherboard, perhaps trying another bios might help since power is controlled via software by the bios. I cant think of other reasons. Also because 1.424  to 1.488 is quiet a big delta in voltage when talking about pc components, it never happened to me with my DFI and with the previous Asus. Wait for other replies.

this is the PSU I have: http://www.thetechlounge.com/article/44 … +480W+PSU/

and I am using 20 > 24 pin converter

edit: if this is unsafe i'll put my CPU back to stock clocks to prevent damage

im using too a 20 to 24 pin connector without any problem. Have you tried a new bios? perhaps it solves the problem, it deserves a try, there are buggy bios out there, you may own one.
Anyway no it shouldnt give you problems that voltage even if its unstable, im running my venice at 1,6 from months and the ram at 3,4v without any problem. What really counts are the temperatures, try to keep your X2 under the 50/52° in full load, and itll be surely ok.
When im overclocking and testing with prime95 many times happens that @1,52v the test fails after some minutes, but @ 1,58 not even in 24hours. So, if your cpu is stable at i.e. 1,58v but all of a sudden power goes to 1,52, it might give you an error, it might fail and giving even a bsod. Anyway just run some hours prime95(small FFT) if its stable it'll should be ok and who cares if the power is not very stable eheh, but if fails, just rise a bit the vcore, dont go over 1,6 if youre @air and always stay under 52° of maximum temp in full load (20 minutes of prime95=full load, but better logging the max temps with MBM).

#686415 by pcgamerDonor (User) at 2006-09-12 02:06:32 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

I already have the latest bios. Temp at full load doesn't go over 50, max it stayed during my prime 95 12h test was 51 degrees. Yep also ran prime95 and the CPU is stable. My concern was just that is 1.422 ~ 1.488 normal? or unsafe

#686418 by unknown[104101] at 2006-09-12 02:16:08 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

not normal. Its safe if it doesnt go over 1,6v. If prime didnt fail then it is even stable.

#686468 by unknown[131385] at 2006-09-12 07:07:49 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

My voltage changes like that too.. (3200+ @ 3800+)

#686638 by pcgamerDonor (User) at 2006-09-12 14:21:20 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

k kool, nothing to worry about then =)

#687043 by unknown[131385] at 2006-09-12 22:58:21 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

Then again mine goes from 1.344V to 1.380V like twice a minute or so..

nvrmind i fixed the clock at my own to  2,32ghz from 2.21ghz

i know how to clock my cpu, but how do i JUST overclock my ram witout touchin the cpu?  P4 3.0ghz overclocked to 3.2ghz    once i did this from 200mhz to 214 that also does it to my ram right?  ocz pc3200 ddr400   2x1gb   so im done wit the cpu, just wanna add more to the ram, but how?

#694259 by chucklesjhDonor (Power User) at 2006-09-24 05:52:43 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

I've successfully overclocked my CPU in the past (AMD Opteron 148 2.2GHz) to around 2.82GHz and it ran nicely... only problem then was that I really didn't need to have extra heat since it was hot in my room anyway, but now I have a Scythe Infinity with the giant 120mm fan on it, keeps it cool at 28 to 30C before overclocking.  Tomorrow I think I'm going to see if I can get past the 3.0GHz mark :-D
