ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 ULi M1695 4DDR-DIMM 3PCI 2PCIe AGP SATA Raid Audio LAN Socket939 ATX

EDIT: Ok now Im up in 240mhz FSB (2200mhz) and its working like a charm. No problems so far.
Not even an increase in heat, still 28Cº idle and 30Cº full load.

I have some questions about overclocking:

1) my DDR is running at 3-4-4-8 @ 200MHz will i be able to clock it to run faster and if so how much faster and how does it work? (I got Apacer Tech)

2) Will I be able to overclock my Leadtek 7600GT the temp is 66 C when im not playing any games. The card is running at 1400MHz (It says 559/702 MHz on the settings)

3) Will I be able to overclock my 3500+ AMD 64 (2.2GHz) the temp is 41 C

My Mobo is a Asrock 939duel-SATA 2

Edit:
why is my DDR running at 200MHz if i bought a DDR400MHz?

And also:
Do i need some program to overclock?
I dont know anything about overclocking but I would like to learn, we all gotta start from somewhere.

how(what program) can u tell you the Video Card temperature?-- and are Ati Radeon 9600 series overclockable? thanks

-- guess there is no temp sensor on the 9600 card
-- all cards are overclockable, but how is that in percentage? u gotta give it a shot

-- Atitool is my favorite overclocking tool for ati based video cards.

You can also check the temp on everything with Everest

But any experts who can answer my questions?

-- i believe not, from the timings of ur memory, the 3-4-4-8 part, it is a value memory, means, it will run only @ rated speeds and rated timings, screwing around with such memory and trying to overclock is not a good idea and will probably cause system instability, unless of course u use a memory divider which is mentioned in my profile if u want to check it out

2) Will I be able to overclock my Leadtek 7600GT the temp is 66 C when im not playing any games. The card is running at 1400MHz (It says 559/702 MHz on the settings)
-- overclocking 7600GT haven't been a pleasant experience for most of its owners, it is like the card is @ its limits already, there is nothing more u can do about its clock speeds. i got a same card, wasn't able to raise the core clock above 595 without instability issues using a zalman cooler @ temps below 45c. and that's just an example from what other users tried to reach.

3) Will I be able to overclock my 3500+ AMD 64 (2.2GHz) the temp is 41 C
-- i believe u can, as u may keep the stock vcore or even lower, which will raise or temps a bit, or may drop them a lot, u will never know without trying. anyway, keep in mind that as long as u are below 55, u are good. and if below 50, then u are better than good

My Mobo is a Asrock 939duel-SATA 2
-- have no experience with this mobo

Edit:
why is my DDR running at 200MHz if i bought a DDR400MHz?
-- 200x2 ... double data rate == ddr == 200mhz but as effective as 400mhz, nothing wrong with that.

And also:
Do i need some program to overclock?
-- nah, overclocking with programs will always cause instability @ some point. bios is the best, and my profile will help a lot if u got no overclocking experience with AMD

I dont know anything about overclocking but I would like to learn, we all gotta start from somewhere.

Hey, a small question about overclocking graphiccards.. I'm gonna buy a asus 7600GT, and I'll probably overclock it from the beginning.. but umm, I've read somewhere that software overclocking isn't very good.. Is this only when it comes to CPU overclocking? Thus far I've used powerstrip to overclock my 5900 card.. Should I continue to go with that? (powerstrip)

software overclocking will probably be way more easy with videocards, and better, because you're not flashing anything that could avoid warranty
when overclocking processors the software way allways sucks if you're looking for stability and ease of use... just use the bios for that

edit: and if you don't really mind flashing the bios of the card... make sure the clocks run stable for a few weeks, than flash them with those clocks, this makes it easy after a format or something, because the clocks will be registered in the card, not in a program...

7600GT is not a great overclocker, don't get ur hopes too high

overclocking vga card through software is the default for overclocking vga cards. listen to what josty2 said

demagh: What limits overclocking in a GPU? The difference between 7600GT and GTX is purely clock speed, isnt it? Should'nt I be able to get it to that value? I've got a zalman cooler right now, not sure which model, but it's all copper atleast..

#653711 by demagh (User) at 2006-07-23 22:43:39 (7 years ago) - [Report]Top

your information is so distracted that this may take a while:
Note: my reply is within your quote

CyberRascal wrote:

demagh: What limits overclocking in a GPU?
-- that's not a question to consider answering because every GPU got its properties, like the number of transistor, the nanometer technology it is built and and the fabrication technique + its own architecture + pipelines + its heat handling qualifications. So, it a GPU may overclock with consideration to what is mentioned above till 20% more of its stock clocks and another GPU may not even reach 3% of its clocks. Even cards based on same GPU, may not have the same overclocking results, as the manufacturing process of such processors is mainly focused on qualifying the product to be able to run stock speeds with no problems, whatever over this speed is not guaranteed to be reached.

The difference between 7600GT and GTX is purely clock speed, isnt it?
-- first of all there is no 7600GTx, there is 7800GTx, and 7900GTx, even though, the GT is not the GTx in ANY known model, EVER. there are difference in the [1] number of pipelines, [2] clock speeds, [3] memory chips used "so they can reach higher memory clocks [4] voltage fed to the GPU [5] modable bios voltages ... etc.

"Should'nt I be able to get it to that value?
-- no, you wont be even getting near to that.

I've got a zalman cooler right now, not sure which model, but it's all copper at least
-- this will probably help to keep ur card cool, not improve ur overclocking results

just a question, where did u get ur information from? i mean the 7600GT/GTx part?!

Erm, I based the GTx/GT part on some old knowledge, I think it was my brother that told me a long time ago that the only difference between Ultra and normal cards was the clock speeds, which I then projected onto the GT/GTx GPU's.

I guess I've never been so completely wrong before. :p so it's all luck how far I can push my 7600GT? Thank's for the info though. You learn something everyday.

#653730 by demagh (User) at 2006-07-23 23:08:43 (7 years ago) - [Report]Top

what ur brother told u was true in the 6800GT/Ultra series, but that is not the case with the GT/GTx

about the 7600GT overclocking, i managed to raise the core from 580 to 605 without artifacts, but that was bullcrap, and nothing to consider from the performance point of view, wish u better luck

anyway, good to know i helped

Overclocking E6300 and E6400...

According to this article http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2802 it is better to get any of the new Conroe E6300 / E6400 and overclock them than to get the E6600... I know that the E6600 has 4mb of l2 cache.. so can 300 and 400 actually be the same speed?

Please let me know.. I want to know if it is better to get the 6300 and overclock it and save money for a nicer video card..

#656510 by demagh (User) at 2006-07-28 13:59:14 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

@ankra123
if the money saved will go for a nicer video card, then go with the 6400 considering this system is primarily built for gaming.

#656527 by CyberRascal (Power User) at 2006-07-28 14:47:21 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

It seem's that the larger L2 cache on the E6600 only gives a performance boost on some areas; not all.

The only thing I will use my computer for is 3d rendering and gaming, will it affect those aspects profoundly?

Because the E6400 is available next week.. And the E6600 the 20th of august or something, and I cant be arsed to wait!

edit: With an 7600GT the CPU shouldn't limit the FPS, even if I went for E6400, right?

what about an overclocked 6600??
... hum...  i really hope the prices go down from what I have seen in tigerdirect... newegg doesnt have them yet.

#656645 by demagh (User) at 2006-07-28 18:18:01 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

@Rascal
right, actually the processor will be limited by your vga card.

@ankra
6600 will probably have even better overclocking results because of the default higher multiplier, considering keeping other components @ stock + better overall results of course

and overclocked to 2.88Ghz 6400, barely catches up with the stock E6600, that's what've seen on xbitlabs ASA i can remember

newegg will have them @ probably high prices as well, ETA @ 30/7/2006, till then try Monarch also check out ZipZoomFly
Mwave

Hey demagh, thanks.

I will go for E6600 if it's available next week. However, which motherboard would you recommend? I'm going for mid-performance-overclocking or something. I'm going for Nvidia 7600GT, and some DDR2 memory. probably will mix sata and pata drives. I own a antec neo he 500w psu.

#656674 by unknown[127883] at 2006-07-28 19:21:15 (6 years ago) - [Report]Top

yeah dude, thanks

i will go with the 6600 too.. we should keep each other posted on the shipping and overclocking and etc.

@Rascal
wouldn't matter if u are looking for a mid-range overclocker, they all are mid range overclockers
but my personal favorites nowadays i DFi OR Asus

Okay. But I'm feeling lost now

There's several chipsets, right? For example nforce or intel 975x? Which one is best?

I've heard that nforce is better with nvidia cards(it's developed by nvidia?), true?

Can someone link me to a motherboard that is ideal for both E6600 and 7600GT(nforce?)

Is it really necessary to go with 800mhz DDR2? I can only afford 2gb of 533mhz..
