What about avatars with political or religious "bashing"? Sure they might be funny but they give a predisposition when you start reading his post.

I don't see why we have the smilies at all. I think they are mainly annoying and can't see anything useful to use them for.
I am probably a minority, but maby we could have a poll about this too?

This can be done with ease.
<ontopic>
I'm all for freedom of speech , let the posts on politics & religion flow.
And leave the mod's/Admin to provide correct policing of these topics.

Yea... especially when you've got Nazis posting in threads about Jews.... it's just not pretty.
I've already stated that I don't think these topics should be banned, but I think the people who love to go trolling in the forums and spam these intelligent discussions or start flame wars should be dealt with, that would fix the problem just fine.

you always pick on me bully
i totally agree that things like Nazism , rascism, things of that unwanted material should be banned from our forums...it's not accepted in society, so it shouldnt be accepted/tolerated here. id like to see how long someone like Andrew with his comments would last in the outside world ... not long i can promise that. and im pretty sure it would be a more severe punishment than a ban from somewhere
First off, I love nothing better than a good political-type discussion with intelligent, open-minded people -- whether or not they share my particular viewpoint or vice versa. I strongly dislike religion and find most religious discussions extremely disinteresting and distasteful, but I'd very much like for people to have the freedom to discuss their religious beliefs if they so choose. As long as the discussion is handled in a semi-mature fashion then I don't see a problem with it.
I agree with Ubitsa and VeryBadGUy, basically (I'm agreeing with VBG!!?? ).
What I'd like to see is a separate forum, perhaps with slightly relaxed but still clearly defined rules for the religious/political discussions -- I'd hate to see "aggressive behavior" warnings given out for sarcasm or satire, for instance. Since those topics are more emotionally charged and far more complex than your average Chit-Chat fare, there really needs to be a bit more leeway on the interpretation of the rules. Obviously, blatantly anti-social and offensive stuff like racism should NOT be tolerated, and should be rewarded with an instant ban from both the tracker and the forums, as far as I'm concerned, but I'd really prefer for people to be able to speak their minds without having to worry too terribly much about a rule infraction.
While it's true that some people will prove to be simply too immature and/or ignorant to handle such discussions, the people who can should not have to suffer on their behalf. I'm a firm believer in giving people as much rope as they can handle, and if they choose to hang themselves with it then that's entirely their problem.
I guess that's my typically long-winded way of saying "No" to your question. I'm a hopelessly verbose old fart.
I think any form of cencorship is bad... its just too bad that many people find it hard to express themselves.

Would you like to see religious and political topics banned from the site?
Who cares?!? 28%
Yes. 25%
Yes - they only bring out the worst in others such as hate. 21%
No, they don't bother me I can participate in them just fine. 14%
No. 12%
Votes: 15,360

will the poll results be turned into actual enforcements?
#349198 by unknown[22381] at 2005-08-23 11:56:52 (7 years ago) - [Report]
It depends how you interpret the results, it can go either way
1: "Who cares" votes are irrelevant so the 46% yes > 26% no wins
2: 54 % have no problem with these topics > 46 % that do have a problem wins
Ahhh the beautiful world of statistics

I see the results as that there is no majority against keeping these topics, so there is really no reason to remove them, besides, less than a third of our members actually voted, so there is really no democratic validity. And even had there been a democratically valid majority against I still believe that those who do not wish to read/post in these topics can simply choose not to do so, even if the topics are still available.

[Edit] Spelling error
The majority of those that voted, chose to not allow these topics. Therefore there is already a good case for not allowing them in the future. The members are really quite fond of reminding the staff about how they would like to see the site run!
No democratic validity?
You're correct in your assessment that only one third of the entire membership voted.
But how many of those actually read the forums?
How many of those who read the forums actually look at the front page polls?
How many of those who read the forums and look at the front page polls actually voted?
Several UK governments have been voted in for five years with a leeser percentage of the population voting!
There are some of us that do wish to read these discussions and wish to take part in them,
but we cannot stand to see the rascist, xenophobic and religious fanatics speading their hate!
Still, no staff decision has been reached yet!

All valid points, but I really hope that there are more people in Britain voting, even in Iraq they had 47-60% (depending on what figures you use), as for apointing governments the passive/active support principles would yield different results here. The decision, as always, is one for the staff to make, with our without help from poll results. My point is that with such a low percentage voting, the poll should really not be given that much weight when making that decision.

Dude I will pay you to ban religious and political crap.
They just cause arguments and get everyone all worked up, then they go onto the main site and their all full of bad energy which goes into the site and one day the server will just blow up. Ya thats what will happen.
Or you could make a whole new section on the forums for it, but its easier to just ban it.
#368884 by unknown[103608] at 2005-09-07 12:59:14 (7 years ago) - [Report]
I dont think they should be banned. Maybe a more zero tollarance leval on flaming. This could be added to the forum guide line rules something like....
All religious and political threads will be treated with a zero tollarance level and anyone breaking it will be banned from the forums for set period....
At first people will not read it but when people start getting banned the word will spread....

Ya thats an ok idea too..
The thing thats really annoying is all the George Bush threads, you can't blame him for every damn thing that goes wrong its ridiculous.

@riseagainst
Yeah, I agree and also think that these Bush-threads - not all of them are irrelevant - but most lately have been, because they have been about the same - makes staff consider the option again.
I just saw Max' post in a recent Bush thread. I don't think that because one person can't post something without flaming others for their opinion, that it should mean that political and religious threads should be banned from chit-chat. By all means make another forum and ban (either temporarily or permanently - mods discretion of course) people who can't participate in a debate properly.
Just a suggestion

Well if there were any decisions made ... They should ban them because more people are for that option.

Yeah but I think that if they do then Political avatars should have to go too.
