Basically there are two cases when you will download some extra/unwanted data.

Case one: You have received multiple copies of the same piece. For example, you have  requested
peer1 for a piece but peer1 was unable to respond at that moment, so you request peer2 to send you that piece and it responds instantly. By the time peer2 starts to send you the piece peer1 also start send you the same piece.

Now you have downloaded two copies on the same piece and one of them is wasted. In this way you may receive some redundant data, however note that this is not necessrily corrupted.

Case two: You have received some corrupted data due to hash fails. Hash fails are common occurrence in bittorrent and it occurs when a peer sends you bad/corrupted data. Generally all bittorrent clients can detect hash fails and automatically re-downloads the discarded piece/s.

However in extreme cases such as when the torrent halts at 99% and keeps on re-downloading the same piece, it gets frustrating and can greatly affect one's ratio.

Here are few things you can try out under such circumstances:

  • Firstly, if you are stuck at 99%, try extracting the files. The download might have been already
completed. Also make sure you have the latest version of winrar.

  • Reset you router/DSL modem and then resume the download.

  • Try Bypassing the router.

  • Stop downloading the .sfv and .nfo files i.e. Set their priority to “Do Not Download”  or "Disabled".
These files aren't required to extract the rars, so just prevent downloading them if they are ones
responsible for the constant hash fails.

Note that all clients do not provide control over individual files in a torrent, however clients like
          Bitcomet, Azureus, Bittornado, Bitsprit do.

  • Delete the file that is causing the has fails and then resume the torrent. The client will automatically
           re-download those parts.

  • Tick the "ban/kick clients sending bad data" option if its there in your client. Some clients like Bittornado
has this option separately and some does it automatically. Azureus has the "IP Filter" feature which can
           ban IPs permanently.

  • Constant hash fails could be caused by a bad RAM. Use Memtest to check your memory.
          Get the software here: http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html
and here's the user manual here: http://hcidesign.com/memtest/manual.html

  • Disable DMZ if you have it enabled. Forward your ports instead.

  • Try using another client to complete the download.

  • Use Safepeer Plugin For Azeureus To Filter IP's : Download Here
  • Reduce No. Of Peers/Connections Per Torrent

This always helped me. When I first downloaded 24 Episode 1 I almost downloaded 150 MB extra. Reduced No. of connections per torrent in Bitcomet and everthing went perfect.

i just had the above mentioned problem - i was stuck at 99,9% on a 3,91 gb torrent (a discography, so did not contain any rar archives, only uncompressed mp3s in their original scenefiling).

I tried out the above suggestet fixes that was possible for me to do and none of them worked.

I was just about to delete the torrent file, redownload it and only download the pieces that wouldnt hash-check before - before this i decided to stop all my other downloads from the tracker wich all were discographys, containing lots of pieces. This last action seemed to have effect couse suddenly the torrent at 99,9% was complete and all hash-checked.

My conclusion is that uTorrent wich i use may have difficulties handleling many pieces at a time on multiple torrents. So my advice to people who find themselves in a situation like mine - try and stop all other downloads - try and delete the files complete that wont hash-check. Do 'Force Re-Check' and let it complete a couple of times more (and keep your fingers crossed that you are as lucky as i was).

When I got bad files I found out a condensator on my network card had blown. After replacing it all worked well once again... Alternatively if you don't have the proper condensator, buy a new card, they'll set you back only ~10 euro's
