back onto SG...

I think that SGA's story has been done to death... what SG needs is a new fresh start, hopefully universe will provide although i'm doubtful

yea right, why mess with a show that has a good audience? im sure all atlantis fans arent gonna tune into universe just for that. I  wouldnt, id say fuck those guys at mgm.
there is still so much story to tell in atlantis but oh well..

well atleast some good news....

Proving that you can't keep a good franchise down -- at least not for more than a day or so -- the SCI FI Channel has green-lit production on Stargate Universe, the third live-action television series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The official press release from MGM and SCI FI is expected later today.

Universe will have a 2-hour premiere in 2009, and land in a regular time slot next summer -- meaning there will not be a production gap between the second and third Stargate television series.

The trade magazine also reported that the show will be set on board a previously unmanned ship called the Destiny, and will involve more space-based action than its predecessors. "Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a preprogrammed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe," the magazine said.

The producers are reportedly looking to cast a known actor for one of the leading roles, and fresh faces to round out the cast. This would follow the pattern of SG-1, which earned a lot of marketability from leading man Richard Dean Anderson when it premiered in 1997, rather than the largely unknown cast of Atlantis.

The new series will also be aimed at a slightly younger audience, SCI FI president Dave Howe said.

"This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation," he said. "We really don't want to be more of the same. It's going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe."

"In Universe, we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home," series co-creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper said. "Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping-off point for telling stories."

Wright and Cooper will also executive produce. The two created Stargate Atlantis, which will end its TV run in January (story). An Atlantis movie will also air later in 2009 on SCI FI -- hopefully the first of many.

More information is expected very soon.

still though I dont get it, why can an established show with a good solid fanbase for something that could fail big time? I mean alot of the sg:a fans didnt even watch the original sg1 show or they didnt like it as much.. I hope it does good I really do but it still sucks

About them making a Stargate for the younger audience reminds me of SG-1 episode 200, where they make a mockup episodes where the cast are made by teenagers!

Stargate: Voyager 90210 "aimed at a slightly younger audience". Oh dear...

They should sack whoever thought up that idea. When I say "thought up" I mean browsed a Star Trek forum.

Yes it is risky.  It would have been so cool to have both SG-A and SG-U running on the Scifi Channel and then they can gauge audience reaction to the new show before dropping SG-A.

As a bonus we would have had two scifi shows to watch for a while, just like when we had SG-1 and SG-A both in production.

lol, i never really saw any of the cast members as being old. O'neill did a bit in his last couple seasons, but i doubt anyone was happy to see him go. I nominate malcolm reynolds (firefly) for the new team leader and river for the hot alien native with superpowers that gets taken into the team also she doesnt like to wear clothes. and then jackson and mckay for the other 2 slots. and david duchovny playing the character of fox mulder will be the captain of the ship.

I would watch that. to the max.

The decision to end Stargate Atlantis and jump to the movie format was made mutually by the SCI FI Channel, MGM, and Stargate Productions in Vancouver, executive producer Brad Wright told GateWorld today. Rather than canceling the show because of under-performance, the Powers That Be decided to go out on top while Atlantis is still popular enough to support the release of DVD movies.

O rly I say. I sure hope those movies just comes with a few months inbetween

Sounds like they are trying to make some kind of Voyager/Enterprise thing. They`ll fly around and every now and then find some planet land get in trouble and probably a few spacefights and stuff. I dunno, i do like cool spaceships and its an easy concept and could probably only work if the crew is any good and ofc storyline. Atlantis was great s1-2 but ended up with too many random filler stuff imo and the fact that MacKay is probably the only good character the show has, reeaallyy dont like Teyla or Ronin and Shepard is okeyish SG-1 was amazing, story and cast wise i mean Teal`C and Oneill are pure win thats oneill with 2 lls!(holds up 3 fingers) xD all we can do is wait and se but one thing is for sure we do need more scifi not less!

If people wouldn't whine about a show getting "worse" or "boring" they wouldn't be canceled so often. Those of you can only blame yourself. Watching a show or movie should be about fun and entertainment, not necessarily about a deep story, though it would be a bonus. Well , the old episodes remain forever, so you can still enjoy it after some time, like i have. SG-1 was much better for the first 5 seasons,  but i loved every last episode till the end. Favorite show ever, weather in the beginning or in the end, O Neill, Teal'c Carter and Jackson were just the most perfect pair of characters EVER.What can i say, gonna have to wait for the next series
"Eureka is going downhill" ,  if it gets canceled soon, your one of whom to blame. Entertainment is what television, gaming, the internet should be about.
I'm fucking pissed, really. :grumpy: i could have watched the same sg-1 as it was in the end for 30 more seasons, no prob. i think i have already rewatched the show 5 times. The same 30 seasons goes for atlantis, same goes for xfiles, same goes for farscape

Wait, but what if the people are not entertained anymore by the show? Is it their fault for not being entertained, is it then their fault that the show gets cancelled? The people want to be entertained! They want to have fun! They want to enjoy the shows! People don't watch shows in order to not have fun. They want good, fun, entertaining things to go on, not to get cancelled. You got it all wrong I think!

lol actually if people didn't download the show and actually watched it on tv than the show would not get cancelled

the most perfect set of characters was the firefly crew. O'neill and jackson made SG-1, carter and te'alc were just accessories.

and personally i loved the final season of SG-1 and think Chrichton did a great job of team leader, shanks was a bit lacking post s8 imo though

and i couldnt of watched x-files for very long without mulder. Every episode without him made me cringe

For some reason, it didnt instantly appear in the browse menu, but when I searched for the episode, I found it.

And I agree, this was just another filler. It's amazing to see that we are six episodes in now, and all of them have been fillers.

On the other hand, I'm starting to get the hots for Doctor Jennifer. Anyone got fakes of her ?

SCI FI AND MGM REACH FOR THE STARS WITH
‘STARGATE UNIVERSE’

New Stargate Series Targeted For Summer 2009 Premiere

New York, NY – August 22, 2008 – SCI FI Channel and MGM Television Entertainment have reached an agreement to extend MGM's Stargate brand with a new series for the Channel. Production on the first season of Stargate Universe, a weekly series based on the popular Stargate franchise, will begin in early 2009, with the show targeted to premiere that Summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and who both currently serve as executive producers on Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

"SCI FI has enjoyed tremendous success with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and we're proud to be the home of the new Stargate Universe," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. "Universe will continue the Stargate legacy of vibrant storylines and compelling adventures, but will re-invent the format in a whole new way."

"The Stargate franchise enjoys a loyal and substantial fan base that welcomes each new installment with fevered enthusiasm," said Charles Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President and Corporate Development for MGM. "We are delighted to be working again with Brad and Robert and look forward to seeing new adventures with the launch of Stargate Universe on SCI FI Channel next year. Stargate Universe will continue the longstanding relationship between MGM's stellar science fiction franchise and cable's premiere destination for all passionate science fiction fans."

Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies said, "Stargate Universe is a natural progression for the Stargate brand and for our network. Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis have been key drivers for SCI FI and we are looking forward to seeing where this next chapter leads, as each new installment of the Stargate franchise further engages the SCI FI audience."

Wright and Cooper said: "In Universe, we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humour, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping off point for telling stories."

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI. Following its premiere, Universe will assume a regular hourly slot in Summer 2009.

Universe will be distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.
