if the other computers on my network run XP can i still access them without rebooting into windows?
Assuming your have a normal style setup just use samba
In a terminal, you should be able to type basically :<
mount -t smbfs //windows_maxhine/shared_dir /homes/james/windows_drive
edit: forgot to mention, if you want to check it out, try xsmbrowser, you can urpmi it. It's a GUI-based app for mounting samba shares. You may need to 'urpmi tcl' as well before you use it.

I agree that the games market is lacking in linux supported stuff, but theres no denying you have to do alot of fiddling in Linux to get certain stuff working properly.
On a side note, you don't have to use the console in linux to set up a windows share, theres a pretty easy to use samba server and client GUI, in distros like mandrake and suse, and you can access them through a kind of "network nieghbourhood". Its a nice feature that also lets you use user level security with lots of options,.

True, but setting up a samba share in terminal is pretty easy. And a good exercise, too.

Yes, all of these are easy to find through google, alongside with download pages. Anyway, here's to make your life easier. They are ordered by how easy they are (my opinion, nobody elses) but keep in mind that if it's easy, it's also limited and not necessarily good.
The upper half are dists that have really put effort into useability and they usually are based on the bit more difficult ones, that would be the second half.
I run debian on my server boxes and Ubuntu on my laptop.

If you follow this guide for Mandriva, you should be set - it's pretty straightforward.
The trouble comes after you've got the basics set up, and you start exploring, and find lotsa things you can't do
they are great at helping out n00bs, thier tutorial sections is particularly useful, and its generally a good repository for linux stuff..

I remember my first try at Linux ... I wanted to install Gentoo Linux and I tought it would be easy but when everything started I had no idea what to do hehe ... So I gave up and left Linux a lone for a long time but I think now it's time to start with Linux again, that Ubuntu looks really nice.
Ubuntu is the best out there for noobs imo, and it looks sleek

I just installed Ubuntu and it's totally screwed up. I'll install it again tho, and then add the relevant info to this guide to make it easier for non-mandriva users to reap the benefits.
