It would be great if you would include a section on installing drivers, I've spent the last hour trying to install network card drivers, but there's no instructions anywhere.

OK, i'm a complete Linux n00b too. What about Mandriva? I heard it's good. Plus you can get a "powerpack" for it, or so I heard (PP costs money, but that's what BT is for ).......

By the way, if anyone knows of any good Linux sites for n00bs, please share....

For Mandriva users, try: http://mandrivausers.org

Mandriva is very good

I wouldn't worry about the PowerPack, it is occasionally torrented, but it's not incredibly useful, since pretty much all apps for Mandrake are free.  The only useful thing about buying the PP is that you get support from Mandriva.

@Komp:  What network card do you have, and is it connected PCI?  I've never encountered a NIC that requires drivers, though it's certainly possible, so if you give us some info we'll get you set.

#285413 by Komp (Power User) at 2005-07-08 12:54:21 (8 years ago) - [Report]Top

Oh ok. Well it's a wireless card, PCI. It comes with linux drivers on the cd, and minimal instructions. After figuring out how to un-tar the files in the .tar, it says to type 'make install' in the terminal. So I do, and it asks me where the kernel source is (default is usr/src/linux-XXXXX or something). There's no kernel source there, or anything in the /usr/src folder at all. I figure it's a module or something and I need to recompile the kernel. So I download the kernel source, all 30 megs, and try to extract it to /usr/src. But nooo, I can't extract it there because I don't have the permissions. I can't find a way to run the extracter proggy in root mode. So I extract to my home directory and try to cp it across, but it refuses to copy the folders and I don't know why. I chmod the /usr/src folder to access permisions for all users and I can copy it across using the file manager. That's all sweet, so I go back and type 'make config' in the driver's directory and the make command has an error that it can't find config.mk, even when config.mk is in the fucking folder.

Yeah, so considering the first time I touched linux was this morning I think I made a pretty good attempt at it And don't even get me started on the problems I had with Disk Druid. Or NTFS. Or GRUB. Or my display resolution.

  Yea, you did pretty awesomely actually, I'm impressed.

Did you try to install the wireless card via 'drakconf'?    Assuming the manual install is the only way to go, you can get the *correct* kernel source for your Mandriva Install by doin 'urpmi kernel-sources'.  That will automatically extract the kernel source to the correct directory and set things up for you.

The problem with config.mk could be permissions as well, you might wanna make sure it's accessible that way.

And when you're ready, fire away questions about your other issues

#286207 by Komp (Power User) at 2005-07-09 00:07:58 (8 years ago) - [Report]Top

Ahhh yes, ok. It's not Mandriva, it's Fedora, so I'll delete the source I downloaded and set the permissions right, then I'll try the yum or aptget equivilent of 'urpmi'. I'm not sure if Fedora has it, but I'll look for it. I'll also try reading the manual to learn how drakconf and make work.

Is there a site with info on... just learning linux? Like, once you have it installed, how the fuck you actually use it?

:edit:

Ok, so I decide this morning to try again with the wireless driver. But first, I'll put on some mp3s. So, I try to go to my mp3 folder... oh wait, Fedora doesn't have ntfs support. No problems, I'll play mp3s off an mp3 cd I have. I hit eject... nothing happens. I hold down eject, nothing happens. So I go to /media, right-click on one the cd drive, but there's no eject button. Finally, I try the 'computer:///' folder and I can eject it. So now my cd's in, I just double-click on the mp3 to play it, right? Rythymbox pops up and tells me it doesn't support mp3s. What kind of media player, in 2005, doesn't play mp3s? Ok, so I'll try xmms instead. I download and install it thanks to the handy 'yum' command, but it doesn't play mp3s either because of 'licencing issues'.

Back to rhythmbox. I find this page:
http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/fedora.html
with instructions. I follow all the instructions, get to the final instruction and it says:

Quote:

No Match for argument: gstreamer-universe

I give up. I've given it about 5 hours of work to get it to do basic windows functionality, and I've gotten nowhere. I'm going back to windows now.

You should come to Mandriva :-P

It is rediculous about the mp3 player support, but that's not entirely the media players' fault - the mp3 standard isn't free, so free software isn't really allowed to use it.   However, if you use Mandriva, the plf urpmi sources will give you all your illegal stuff transparently, and you'll be able to play dvds/mp3s etc in seconds.

As for the eject problem, usually 'eject /mnt/cdrom' as root in a terminal works pretty well.

Fedora doesn't sound very nice to me...

Yep, the current 'Mandriva' version is just Mandrake with a couple name changes here and there.  Everything will be changed over proper for the next version, though.  Nothin to worry about

hi there! Can I ask 2 questions?

I installed Knoppix 3.3 on my notebook and my usb mouse wont work
I asked google about it but Its quite hard to understand for me. I checked with lsmod and I have all standard usb modules loaded by default. What should I do?

I think the graphics envirovment is called KDE right? Wich steps should I follow to get all files and directories looking like 'details' under m$ win, forever? (I know how to set the view, its called 'tree view' but what I'm looking for is "apply to all folders" in windows and a way to keep them like that :-P

Thanks for any tips

Which file manager are you using?  There are a couple different ones, and you might want to consider slowly getting used to using the terminal as a file manager - 'ls -l' will give you details view

Ok thanks, I might give that distro a go later. But since my wireless didn't work, and I had to use a network cable, my mum tripped on the cable and broke the modem so I can't use the internet to get a new distro at the moment.

I don't know if this fits here but I would like to ask you about viruses in linux system. Are the viruses the same as in the windows, because I have problem with one virus or trojan that fu**s my connection and I can't connect to the internet so I had to format my C two times last week and I think that I will have to do it today AGAIN...

Hi there.. check out www. linuxquestions.org for issues in X relating to you mouse.. you probably just need to edit your XF86Config file, but that depends on your distro, google is your friend in this matter

In KDE to get the view to change permanantly you must: 1) Change to the view and move to the place you would like Konqueror to open at . 2) Go to Settings and click "save view profile" The profile will probably be called file management. Click save in the next box and you are done.

If you look at the properties of your "home" button that opens up Konqueror, you will see the command is "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement" the KFM stands for Konqueror File Management. You can save various profiles in konqueror and add buttons to your task bar to suit, Just change the "application" part of the properties to "kfmclient openProfile midnightcommander" or summut.. if you like..

No Virii are not the same for Linux, as only "root" can install and use software that can damage the system, unless you get "rooted" you shouldn't have any problems with Virii. Linux just IS much more secure when set up properly.

I can't belive no one has mentioned "SUSE" linux, it is very easy to use, and comes with good support for softs and hardware.

I'm right now downloading suse 9.3 because my friend told me that this is the best, but he warned me about hard installation and that I should find some instructions. Is that true?
I need instructions for installing pppoe...

So how I understood you the viruses are not the same as at the windows...

#292324 by crazytiggerDonor (Power User) at 2005-07-12 13:08:39 (8 years ago) - [Report]Top

I think Suse's installation is one of the best around, the defaults will work just fine, you can always install packages you want later with YaST  (suses package manager)

Suse was easier to install than MD 10.1 for me but id been using linux for over a year when i switched.

Ive reinstalled a couple of times because i wanted to change my patitions around.. so now ive got

10gb root partition

35gb /home partition.

500mb /swap partiion.

That way if i reinstall linux i don't have to format my /home partition with all my gubbins on it.

There are tutorials avaliable, but i shouldn't worry about it too much just go for it.! - again google is your friend.. you can also try http://www.google.com/linux

Edit:And yeh.. don't worry about virii on Linux, ppl will try to say this and that about them but overall you wont experience any problems. I havent, and i didn't even have a firewall configured for over a year, its just not necessary unless youre running an FTP server or a web server like apache.

Linux has no viruses like windows. A first reason would be most spyware/adware/shitware has .exe install which is useless in Linux. Secondly viruses native to Windows install in X:\Windows\System32 .... which is nonexistant in Linux. Third even if viruses do install, the fact that linux is made onto layers makes them useless if not run in root. And trust me you will never use root esp. if you;re a noob
