I've got a suggestion.

How about an option to delete the filter after it downloads the torrent.

The reason I want this is so that if a proper of a movie gets uploaded then it doesnt get downloaded if you already downloaded the first release.

TBNotify just started downloading the xXx 2 proper... and i dont want it ;-)

4 now I'll just manually delete filter rules.

If TBNotify can't write the torrent file to disk, it will crash with a "Run-time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object" error. (Crash as in GPF after the messagebox). I had this happen when my \\server\torrents share was down; first it would stall as windows usually when looking for a server/share that isn't present, and then the crash. Something you might want to fix

Can someone tell me why my family guy filter didn't work?

I added the filter family AND guy AND PDTV and action to notify and download but it didn't seem to work?

You can't use period's in filters.

Nevermind, being dumb, checked the wrong section.

If I set up a filter for a torrent that already exists, then click check now, shouldn't it notify me? Because it's not. Has anyone got an example working filter?

i see where you are coming from. but how about setting a filter to ignore torrents with "PROPER" in them for now?

Quote:

no. it only notifies you of existing torrents. otherwise whenever you create a new filter, for say "familty guy in tv", you will start downloading all the family guy eps on the site.

Quote:

you can put them in. but they are replaced with spaces. just like all the torrent names that are used within tbnotify have their periods replaced with spaces.
read the help guide for more info on filters.

I like his idea of the torrent being deleted after it downloads. Sounds good.  Also, mabye add a time range for the torrent to be downloaded?  For example.  You would snatch family guy on sunday night and no other time.  THe first family guy like last night was released, it downloaded fine   Then this morning another version was uploaded, HD i think. But i already seen it and dont want to watch again.  And since its monday, it wont download because you set it to download only on sunday.

Hope you can fit these in

what about:

"Contains family guy AND hr pdtv in TV/XviD > Ignore
Contains family guy in TV/XviD > Download"

or (if you dont like hr pdtv in general)

"Contains hr pdtv in TV/XviD > Ignore
Contains family guy in TV/XviD > Download"

or simply

"Exactly matches family guy  S04E## PDTV XviD-* in TV/XviD > Download"

Could it be Family.Guy.S04E**.PDTV.XviD-*  ?  The ** would be for two numbers.  SO i woudnt have to enter in:
Family.Guy.S04E10.PDTV.XviD-*
Family.Guy.S04E11.PDTV.XviD-*
Family.Guy.S04E12.PDTV.XviD-*
etc..

no, exactly as i wrote it will do.
# replaces a number

once again, all this is covered in the help guide.

Looking forward to seeing the "delete filter on download" option :-)

On a less positive note: I came home to 2 copys of Top Gear S06E09 :-( A proper was released.

Ignoring all propers is not a good solution either because sometimes the first release that appears on TB is the proper.

This presents a even further problem... You cant just delete the filter after one episode because obviously then futher episodes arent downloaded. I wonder if u could also implement an option to remember what was downloaded and somehow not download a proper if it was already downloaded. Not sure how this would work.

I feel like a bit of a whinger, hope I'm not asking for too much. Because TBNotify is already an excellent piece of software as it is...

Hmm, kinda off topic but is there anyway this could be used in conjunction with eggdrop? So that a post could be made in an IRC channel?

it's unlikely i'm going to implement such a feature in the near future. i just dont see the point.
a proper is a better release, right? i dont understand why you would want a nuked release.

if you want only the non-proper releases, then try using exact filters as mentioned above.

#316814 by unknown[47176] at 2005-07-27 02:13:14 (7 years ago) - [Report]Top

Nuked doesnt nescesarily mean that there is any thing wrong with the release (quite often it is just stupid scene squables or some really minor problem). And sometimes releases arent even nuked when a proper comes out.

If you already have one copy, you dont want to automatically download another if you dont have to.

Sometimes propers are desirable though, its not good to ignore all propers. As I said before - sometimes propers are the only releases that are uploaded.

I dont think that exact filters would do what I want.

Here's some examples of the functionality that I would like.

Eg. "Contains movie name  in Movies/XviD > Download and remove filter"
Eg. "Contains series name  in TV/XviD > Download if havent got episode"

If you think this can be done using the existing functionality please let me know. If not please consider adding support for this.

I'll leave it at that, but one other person has already thought it was a good idea (matt500), so lets see if any one else likes the idea.

Hey Twiglet, I've been using your app and I must agree with Gollum that I'd be lost without it!  There are a couple of things I'd like to see implemented in future versions, and I don't think that any of them would be hard to implement.

First of all, when you click on the systray icon and the "new torrents" list comes up, I'd like to have more options for the columns.... For example, it would be nice to see the number of seeders and leechers and maybe the ttl (though that's unlikely to be necessary since it will always be new torrents being showed - but this suggestion will also coincide with my next one).

Secondly, I noticed that when you use the Search for Torrent feature, it automatically loads the full list.  Any way of either importing the filters from your profile or the filters that you have in place within the app itself?  I mean, I've been using TBNotify almost exclusively (as in not visiting the site) for the past week, except to check my ratio, and I kinda miss the filters I have set under the Browse menu on TB....  Any way to add this in?  This is why I'd like to see the added columns more than in the other window, but I'd like to see them in both if possible....

Third suggestion....  Any way to have TBNotify also notify us if/when we have a new message in our inbox?  You could use the same method as the "view details" method to bring us to the message itself.

Oh... just thought of a fourth suggestion.  Sometimes my wife checks the new torrents while I'm not around and I tend to miss them....  Would it be possible to set it up so that it will show the last X new torrents, where X is set by the user, and if X=0 then it would function like it does now?  Basically, this would show All the new torrents since the last time it was checked PLUS the last X torrents....

I'm pretty sure most of those suggestions could be implemented fairly easily, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd appreciate them....  I also like the idea of being able to apply skins, or making a TB type skin...  That would be awesome!

At the rate you're going, TB will end up with an unofficial Site-Specific Torrent Client, because the specific GUI of a client is the only thing you're really missing to turn TBNotify into an all out client.  And I must say that if you were to make it, I'd be sure to use it!!!!

Anyway dude, keep up the great work and I'll keep using your awesome app!!!

Edit: Just had yet another thought.  Is there any way that you could display some of our profile items such as ratio, comments, etc...  I mean, in the last week the only reason I went to TB was for viewing details or checking my ratio....  This would eliminate the guess work with the ratio....
Again, keep up the great work!!!  GeyeEdit

seeder/leecher count would be impractical to implement. as it changes all the time, and would require tbnotify to update (or partially update) its database more often. since tbnotify was designed with low bandwidth/sever load in mind this isnt going to happen.

i may add TTL at a later date though.

the search feature isnt designed to be tied into the filter system. its purpose is to allow you quick and easy access to the entire TB torrent database.
however, in the next version the search window will remember your selected categories.

no. too much extra work for a system that isnt used very much. i dont get paid for this you know.

I know... I just thought I'd suggest... no harm in that, right?  Anyway, thanks for the input!

As far as the seed/leech thing, you're right, it would probably be impractical, but it would still give you an idea of what's popular and what's not... useful for those who really need to seed....

Anyway, keep up the good work!

This program is great I would only add one more thing to it... Category pictures... It would be a little more colorful

I know that it is TBNotify..

But for v2 could the end user possibly add other torrent sites?

Lab wrote:

nope. that’s practically like asking to re-write the entire program.

for a start, other sites will have to add server-side support for TBNotify. this then causes the problem of having different categories on different sites.
and also, what would you do if two sites have the same torrent, which would you download? and how would you decide that they are both the same? (different sites pack and name their torrents differently -> different info hash)
the problems caused are endless.

So TBNotify doesn't just parse browse.php and the RSS feed? Would you please answer the PM I sent you, or are you under a NDA?

Thanks for your great work on this program, Twiglet. I do have one feature request, however, and I hope that it's fairly easy to implement.

On a couple of the PCs that I use, Windows XP Pro SP2 randomly fails to display some system tray icons upon startup. In most cases, this is easily fixable if I go in to the start menu and click on the shortcut to load the program which is active but not showing in the system tray. For instance, if NOD32 is running but not showing a tray icon, I can run the program shortcut for "NOD32 Control Center" and this causes the icon to be displayed in the tray once it's minimized. If I follow that same procedure when TBNotify is running without a system tray icon, I get a message stating that "Another instance of TBNotify is already running." If I hit CTRL + ALT + DEL and end the process for TBNotify, I am then able to manually load the software and this ensures that the system tray icon loads as well. But is this the only way that it can be resolved?

Basically, my feature request is to have TBNotify "re-add" its system tray icon if the software is running and I access its shortcut through the Start menu rather than displaying a message to indicate that the software is already running. I'm not asking for a multiple instances feature, but rather a change that would allow the one instance to be visible and usable if the system tray acts up.

#332388 by unknown[47176] at 2005-08-12 01:57:49 (7 years ago) - [Report]Top

That would have to do with TBNotify not meeting Windows standards in regards to system tray icons. Apps that are compliant will readd themselves to the tray if you for example kill explorer.exe then run it again.
