its quite simple actually, empty means nothing.. there cant be half of nothing... full means 100%.. half full = 50%...

empty = 0
0/2 = 0

full = 1
1/2 = 0.5

you cant beat math

It's a saying. Either you see the glass (just imagine an ordinary glass cup) that is filled up half way with water. Now think to yourself...Is the cup half filled by the water, or half emptied? Usually pesimistic people say "half empty" and optimistic people say "half full". I'm not necessarily optimistic, but IMO, I look at the glass as life and the trial and tribulations that go with it. The more experience you gain through life, the more the glass fills up IMO.

If you fill the glass up to its half, then its half full.
If you fill up the glass the the edge, and you drink the half of it. The glass is half empty.
